  1. Better specs came about in an attempt to dazzle the consumer with numbers to sell more product, with a completely different marketing technique. Same crap still goes on today. They have to come up with something to make sales. What really happened though, is the addition of more feedback in the designs to improve those spec numbers. In doing this, I believe this further detaches one from the source, adding more complexity that is not needed. This is why I believe the 50 series to be superior. They just sound more like the real thing to me. Specs mean doodoo. It's all about what you hear.
  2. XX50 series no watt meters XX80 series watt meters That's really about it. The 80 series are lower distortion, more bandwidth. Which is better? I prefer the 50 series over the 80 series myself. I think they sound better and are definitely built better.
  3. FYI, with marantz, the 22xx speakers are stereo with xx watts per channel. The 23xx is stereo with 1xx watts per channel. Those speakers you mention are 52 watts, 65 watts, 85 watts and 130 watts per channel stereo. Speakers? These are receivers I mentioned... But you are correct about the number system. 22XX receivers wattage rating is XX per channel. 23XX is 100 watts plus XX per channel.
  4. Marantz 2252, 2265, 2285, 2330 have really been surprising me lately. These are all the number only (not 2285B for example). Beautiful sounding stuff.
  5. Yep, and you can also buy the Totaldac. Point of this comment is?? Oh, it's not American, and it's not cheap. Well, I guess that's something. You obviously haven't heard one, so try that....
  6. While I do agree that driving and talking on the phone can be done safely, some people behind the wheel act like they dropped acid as soon as they put the phone on their head. With that, this should not be allowed either IMO. 99.9999999% of the time, it can wait anyways. Yes, I talk and drive...
  7. I once seen a lady in a mini van driving down the highway with the newspaper draped over the steering wheel. I slowed to parallel her when I saw this. She was looking hard at the paper for over 30 seconds before she looked up and saw me shaking my head... This was in regular traffic! I gotta hand it to her though... She never swerved out of her lane. lol
  8. I'm a passive crossover guy myself, but there is one such solution that really intrigues me. Read through the available options. This is a fully adjustable crossover done in the digital domain using FPGA in the DAC. No preamp required as well makes this very interesting. http://www.totaldac.com/REFERENCE-D1-eng.htm
  9. If you can't understand the words to this song, your system needs work. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=video&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CB8QtwIwAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DSca3_5w8vdc&ei=yEjgU6SBLcWU8QGC44DQCQ&usg=AFQjCNEvV8BVXfmjmZXX9SlI5oOPAYCMOQ
  10. Whatever I want it to be. Want my opinion? Doubt it. I'm listening to music. Not my system.
  11. LMAO! You aint right Craig... But good shat nonetheless. Kill em with the bam bam's bro!
  12. Hence the stupid post I made. It's pretty easy to see what is going on here.
  13. If you didn't get my point I don't think any more explanations will help. So I guess by your description PWK fits into the "gear heads" and "techno babble crowd" since he spent a lifetime measuring his loudspeakers and used those tests with listening tests to improve his designs....... Why would you want good specifications if they are "completely useless" and "they will tell you zero about what something will sound like" ....? miketn You really can be an obnoxious A-hole but hey I've known that for years..... Let me repeat myself and please do not take what I say out on context again.... SPECIFICATIONS tell you ABSOLUTELY nothing about how something will sound....IF THEY DID the hobby would be very boring and we wouldn't have a thing to debate. We would all simply go down to the local box store and all buy the EXACT same thing. Two of the same types of devices can have specifications that are dead nuts identical and sound completely different. So putting too much emphasis on specifications and tests is a road to disappointment.... Do you really think Paul Klipsch or any audio designer worth a shite really designs by specification alone.... if Paul Klipsch did then why not use the drivers with best specifications available in his speakers? Hell look at the POS driver is in the infamous Jubilee... that thing is not even remotely the best driver for that horn specification wise! THEY USE the most important piece of test gear available as the final judge, yup those good old reliable ears...problem is many around here don't have them...especially the techno babble crowd. I tell you what I've sat back and read on the side lines around here for a long time now while painfully watching a good number of boneheads lead the crowd in here to total ear bleed....for some reason these days I'm just sick of reading the total Bullshit spewed around here.. The techo babble bunch needs to head to the ear doctor and get a check up the damage has to be severe... I guess if you don't have anything better to say then you can resort to name calling..... You really need to go back and read what you have been posting Craig..........I took nothing out of context so sorry if you don't like it but they are your own words in exactly the context you posted them in. miketn you indeed took what I posted completely out of context...insulting someone politely is no different then just calling a spade a spade. One takes balls and other takes being a spineless wimp... you figure out which camp you belong in. OOOOhhhh Burn! He just called you out man. You gonna put up with that? LMAO! If he said that crap to me, I'd be finding that SOB....
  14. You still a year out on your queue? Bout 10 mths
  15. And bring me something to work on from time to time, and talk great about me all the time
  16. It's not about how rich you (we) get in this business. It's about more than that. I feel it is our duty to preserve, based on the ability to "do it" is reason enough. Very few people left in this repair business that do the job right.
  17. Just me? Or are them just sexy as all get out! Nice work tk... I'm looking forward to seeing some of your work.
  18. Mmmmm Steak sounds good! Think I'll grill some up tomorrow...
  19. Based on my experience, I have to go with Craig here. I have tried many amps and the VRD's are still here. Owned them over 4 years now and they still impress me every time I turn them on. You just don't get this level of build quality for anywhere near the money they sell for. I drive speakers that would never be classified as sensitive, yet the VRD's play them just marvelously.
  20. You do nice work Dean. Makes me want to buy some Klipsch Speakers just so I can have you do the crossovers If you haven't already, I recommend trying the Jensen Paper & Wax Ribbon Inductors. I prefer these over any of the other ribbon inductors by far.
  21. Both the Pioneer and the Marantz sound wonderful. It really depends on the rest of your system and what you are trying to achieve. The Marantz may be a touch warmer, but will not have anywhere near the grip on the bass and dynamics that the big Pioneer will. Not to mention, your source has allot to do with the final outcome. The Pioneer is the big neutral dynamic machine that is capable of live volume levels. The Marantz is the comfy curl up in the chair type of receiver. Both equally engaging depending on what your trying to accomplish. Just know that if either of these are not properly restored, you won't know what they are capable of. I'd have both
  22. It is... The 2285 (not the B version) is just as good, if 85wpc does it for you. With Klipsch speakers, I can't imagine you needing more, and they are much easier to come by.
  23. Do it. You won't regret it. I'm trying to find one myself. Look real snazzy in a wood cabinet also.
