  1. Thanks...looking forward to playing around with them and figuring out what works best. Sounds like there's a world of modifications/upgrades that can be made, so might dabble in that a bit here. I plan to use them about 60/40 movies, so I'll eventually be on the hunt here for the matching center and some better surrounds than the 10+ year old HTIB surrounds that I inherited when we bought our house. But, for now, I'm really enjoying listening in 2 channel, even though it really exposes my old, outdated, and underpowered sub... One more thing for the equipment upgrade list! How do you like your 818 with the XPA 2? Been thinking about eventually going that route as well...especially the 818.
  2. Any time you want to hear em just let me know. Lot of changes in both of our setups. Can't wait to hear the sub with those Chorus mains.
  3. I saw that beast on CL...I look forward to a listen with those Chorus'...
  4. If anyone has a pair of these laying around that they'd like to sell, I'd appreciate it. I've attached a photo, badge is hard to see, but it's the only photo I could find of it. Thanks guys!
  5. Media rack will be here in a few weeks...should clean this up a lot.
  6. Hello all - I think I probably have done my last mains upgrade for a very long time and wanted to share. I had been looking to upgrade from the RF-62 system that I had to either the RF-63 or RF-83 system. As I was searching (and waiting patiently...or impatiently), for the right set to pop up, I had read Youthman's comparision between the RF-83 and the CF4. Didn't dawn on me that the Epic line was one I should try out, but I did find his thread interesting. Fast forward a few days and wuzzzer pointed me toward a Craigslist posting for a set of CF3s in "good" condition for $500. Not knowing a lot about the CF3, I reread Youthman's original thread and was struck by the advice from Moray James. So, I pestered both wuzzzer and Moray for as much advice/insight as they could provide, while also looking up everything I could on the CF series. Long story short, I made the 2 hour trip to see the CF3s yesterday and was completely blown away. The speakers were in really great shape (aside from missing badges on the grills) and sound awesome. I couldn't help but smile as I handed the seller $475 and listened to him talk with regret about how he'd probably always regret selling them. Got them home and hooked up and I can't explain how great they sound. Just exceptional detail no matter what the genre of music. I've listened to a ton of music and several of my favorite movie scenes and have heard little details that I'd never heard before in pretty much every one of them. Truly a pleasure to listen to. Still need to elevate them to get the tweeter at ear level, but have gotten used to sitting on the floor for now. I need to thank wuzzzer and Moray James for their advice...it was the little nudge that I needed and Youthman for his thread which proved helpful as well.
  7. Thanks for the reply opus. I actually am waiting to hear back from a guy locally that has a set of CF3s that I'd like to hear. Depending on how that goes, I'll let you know where I'm at. Thanks again and best wishes on your sale!
  8. Just missed out on a mint pair of cherry 63s locally a couple weeks ago and am really kicking myself. Craigslist is pretty barren and even the few that are listed are quite a long ways...tried on a couple sets, but just not interested in shipping (which, I don't blame them). For the right price, I'd take a set of 83s too, but likely out of the budget. Ideally, would like to keep the budget below $8-900, but would go a little higher for the right set. Maybe a pipe dream, but since I've seen the 63s go for that and saw a couple 83 sets go for below $1k...here's hoping... I'm located about an hour northwest of Mpls/St. Paul. Thanks for the help guys!
  9. Met up with forum members JOSHJP and SCRAPPYDUE today and had a great time. Listened to Josh's system and was blown away, the dual Epik Empires are certainly impressive. Also spent some time in a local audio store to demo some gear. Was great to meet a couple forum members that I hadn't met yet and further reinforced that there are great people on this forum. Got to meet and hang out with 2 of them today. Thanks guys!
  10. As a somewhat newer member here, I tend to like seeing what gear folks have. As Bill can attest, I've used it to get in contact with folks who either have gear that I already have (and have a question on), or who own gear that I'm looking to upgrade to. So, from that perspective, it's nice to be able to see that... Just my $0.02 anyway.
  11. Others will chime in with advice also, but it's most important to timbre match your front left, center, and right. Not having experience with the quintet specifically, I would guess they'll be adequate for rear surround and front heights, but depending on which towers/center you end up with, you might eventually wish to replace them in this regard as well. Best advice I can give you is to buy the best fronts and center that you can, even if you have to save a little longer to do so. This will save you from the upgrade bug...which will cost you more in the end (speaking from experience [:$]). You can always replace the surrounds and heights later, if you want to... And welcome to the forum!
  12. Congrats scrappy! Been fun reading your impressions as your setup has morphed to it's present state over the past year.
  13. +1 Rage is definitely the better concert experience, but Audioslave is fun in it's own regard. Unfortunately, you can't see him in either right now...
  14. Agreed...for some reason the whole was less than the sum of the parts. Still very good, just not as good as the separate bands were.
  15. Not sure if you're a fan of hard rock, but I really love his Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine work. One of the best guitarists that I've ever had the pleasure to listen to...just incredible.
  16. Looking forward to it! Always fun to meet up with other forum members and swap information/ideas...should be a good time! (Bring some warm weather with you on your way up...)
  17. Yeah, I don't think I'll ask Amazon to send out another 809, due to the experience and the widespread board issues, but I'll likely buy another Onkyo at some point. Haven't really given much thought as to what I'll get as a replacement so far, but the 818 is one I'll likely consider. Will probably hold tight for a while and wait for some of the current models to go on close-out before jumping back into a new AVR.
  18. Well, the Onkyo gave up the ghost this morning while my daughter was watching her cartoons. I suspect the HDMI board failed, as it started flashing Onkyo on the screen and then the screen would get all goofy. Seemed fairly similar to some of the concerns that I had read from others on the AVS forum page. It's really too bad as it's a dynamite receiver, and at the $427 I paid for it, there's no way the power and features can be matched. But, reliability is a major problem and all the pluses are no good to me when it doesn't work consistently. I'll fiddle with it tonight when I get home from work, but I suspect that it will be going back to Amazon and I'll just sit tight with my Yamaha for a while. Major disappointment...
  19. Since I purchased an Onkyo 809 a month or so ago, I really haven't found a use for this receiver. I did have to take the receiver in to have the center channel connection resoldered to the board, but has worked flawlessly since. Was going to move this down to my basement setup, but we rarely, if ever would use it so I thought someone else might as well get some use from it. Used it to drive an RF-62 setup and it was very solid and performed like a champ for me. Receiver will ship in it's original box with all pieces and manuals. Was purchased a little over a year ago. EDIT: Shouldn't have posted this, jinxed myself...I suspect the HDMI board on the Onkyo failed this morning as my daughter was watching her cartoons. Too bad...I really love how that AVR worked.
  20. Appreciate all the good advice. I think we've settled on meeting up and exchanging the speakers that way. Luckily we live within a long but reasonable drive from each other. At least we can be sure they'll arrive in one piece this way. Thanks again!
  21. Thanks Mark! Pending figuring out the shipping details, the system is probably sold.
  22. I've likely got my RF-62s and RC-62 sold to a fellow forum member, but since I bought everything used, the only original box that I have is for the center. Any advice/ideas on the best way to pack and ship the towers that is cost-effective and will get them there in one piece? Thanks!
