  1. Dustin, What kind of effect loading has on sound?
  2. Mike, This should be in the subwoofer section. As far as the amps rattling loose, that's complete bull. Even in the off chance that it does happen, all it takes is a minute with a screw driver. Passive vs active... One is not better than the other, take a look at http://www.svsubwoofers.com/ FAQ section. Passive: -More space taken up by amplifier -Instead of running an RCA cable you can run thinner speaker wire -You can experiment with different amplifiers -If you find a good deal on an amp, you save some money Active: -Less space taken up by amplifier -Instead of running an speaker wire you can run thicker RCA cable -You can't experiment with different amplifiers -If you find a good deal on an amp, it doesn't matter. There's really no sonic benefit from going passive or active, it all depends on the actual driver and the enclosure design.
  3. I would like to see a DIY forum. Also, when replying to a message, I'd like to be able to see all replies to the thread I'm posting my reply.
  4. Either an optical digital or coax digital cable will work.
  5. Just to clarify...Is it no ouput at all, or no ouput from the ES/EX channels? If it's no output at all, Todd's probably right with his suggestion.
  6. Good catch! Maybe you could use it as a computer sub.
  7. ---------------- ...using the avia I was at 119db 20hz and one of them bottomed out and quickly hit the mute. ---------------- Whoa! That's some serious output. Now all you need is one more so you can break 120dB mark.
  8. Hey Kain, Have you considered DIY? That's a serious budget for a DIY sub. If you don't want to do DIY, have you checked if places like Acoustic Visions or Rutledge Audio can ship out to you? They offer reasonable prices and can custom build what you need. If you haven't already, I'd send them an email with your budget, listening preferences, and room size to see what they suggest. Don't forget to ask if they'll ship half way across the world. If the two above options are out of the question, I think the PB2-Plus would be your best bet. Even though Tom V. recommended the HGS-18, I'm sure the PB2 will have higher overall output and I can personally vouch the sound quality of the db-12 driver is excellent.
  9. Paradigm Studios are good speakers. I had a hard time deciding between RF-3II's and the Studio 20's. I like the Paradigms better for music but I picked the Klipsch for their outstanding dynamics since I most of my listening is HT.
  10. I also say save your money. While I feel the RF-3II's are a better speaker, but only by a tiny margin. I currently own RF-3II's and my brother owns KSF8.5's(one less 8" than the 10.5's). They sound similar but he bought his speakers for $200 used.
  11. I know there's a few people at Home Theater Forum that own it. I think Tom V. said that John E Johnson was supposed to put it through his battery of test, he could have been talking about another sub though. The only other review I've seen of it is one from HTF, but you've probably already read it: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?threadid=119301&highlight=svs I'd really love to hear one but I don't have anywhere near that budget for a sub.
  12. What I meant was the different frequency tuning points you get by inserting the included foam port plug. With one port plug inserted you tune the subwoofer from 25hz to 20hz. With two port plugs inserted you tuned it to 16hz but then with only one 3" flared port you're going to have to deal with port compression. At what SPL will compression become a problem? I don't know, I guess experimentation can figure that one out. When I get done with my DIY subs I think I'll do a little experimentation and report back. I don't have a final design yet but it'll probably have 3 4" flared ports.

  14. Did they tell you what the problem was?
  15. Congrats on the new sub. The KSW-12 was my second sub and I thought it was "real" bass. I went through a few subs while being aware about SVS, I had a hard time purchasing without hearing first. The only regret I had about getting an SVS was not doing it sooner(would have saved me money and time). That db12 driver in the Plus is a monster for the price. Have you experimented with the different tuning points?
  16. Rob, The dual AV-15's can displace more air than a single Tumult. Two AV-15's(w/23mm Xmax) displaces 7.4L of air. Around $350 shipped One Tumult(w/34mm Xmax) diplaces 5.1 L of air. $499 shipped While conversing with John Janowitz, he said he likes to be conservative with his numbers and the AV-15's are capable of around 28mm linear excursion. If we use this number: Two AV-15's(w/28mm Xmax) displaces 9L of air The Tumult is slightly less sensitive than the AV-15's as well. The big advantagd the Tumult has is the XBL motor. I figured with two AV-15's in a my small room wouldn't work very hard so distortion would be low enough it wouldn't make a big difference. Don't know if this is true, it just seems logical to me. Unfortunately, I won't have my SVS, someone is buying it this Monday. I'll give my subjective review on it but I wish I could do some objective testing with my SPL meter. I'll will compare it to what ever sub I can get a hold of. Probably my brother's diy sub using the original driver. I may also have another DIY sub cooked up by then to compare it too as well. With my RF-3II's I have them set to small, everything sounds cleaner when they are relieved of bass duties. I tried it that way but liked the result with the x-over set higher. Keep in mind that a x-over point(say 40hz) is not a brick wall, meaning your sub will play frequencies above that. As the frequency goes higher the level at which it plays is reduced. So if you want to run them this way, you'll still be able eq that 45hz peak. I set my x-over to 80hz but eq'd up to 120hz.
  17. Mike, I think it might have been compared to a single Ultra, not dual Ultras. It wouldn't make any sense for the the PB2-Plus to outperform dual Ultra's. Dual Ultra's would have the advantage because of these reasons: -Slightly more output with TV-12 driver -Increase in total enclosure volume -More port area -Just a tad more power w/Samson S1000 Here's Tom V.'s thoughts on how it compares to a single Ultra(copied from post his at HTF)a: "Compared to a single Ultra/500 watts(set to 20hz)...the PB-2(also set to 20hz) will have a good edge from 20-22hz and up. Tough to say exactly, but something in the 3-5dB area would be a good guess. Under 20-22hz, they'll both roll off rapidly. For anyone that can fit the PB-2+ enclosure in the room, and is looking for the best performance from 20hz and up(from a single powered SVS enclosure)...this is the choice. Even the PC_Ultra will take a back seat the to PB-2+(in the above tuning configurations). Of course the PC_Ultra will have a 12hz setting, and it will have about half the *footprint*"
  18. Congratulations on the new speakers. Have a digital camera? How about some pics.
  19. I don't know much about the BIC subs but you can see my thoughts on the Infinity Interlude subs here. The IL100s can be found around $200 and the IL120s around $300. My choice around that price would be the IL120s, you're not going to find another sub around it's price with a built in eq. Nousaine data Klipsch KSW-12 - 104.9dB / 25hz~90dB(102.4) Infinity IL100s 103.5dB / 25hz~94dB__20hz~79.2dB Also if the newer JBL PB-12 series sub performs anything like the older PSW-D112 Nousaine tested, it should be considered as well. I know that a bunch of the older JBL subs had problems with the amps, I don't know if the newer ones have the problems as well.
  20. I've never heard it but it uses the Adire Audio Shiva as the driver so it's going to be an excellent performer. It did very well compared to other high priced subs when Tom Nousaine tested it.
  21. Thanks for the info. I almost forgot about placing my order. My fiancee called me and asked if I ordered those subs I was talking about. That was at 11:55PM. It really didn't matter in the end because I IM'd John J. and he said the preorder was being extended because he hasn't updated the website. DIY is great. With what I'm selling my Ultra/Samson for, I'm able to vastly outperform it, and the Ultra is no slouch. It took me a long time to make up my mind because I didn't know whether I wanted a single Tumult or dual AV-15's. I decided to go with AV15's because I'd have higher output for less money.
