  1. Just to clarify... you can buy new forte 3 passives from klipsch. Yes they will "work" but are not cosmetically correct for forte 2, have to find used forte 2 passives or have originals reconed.
  2. i know that you know that i know what to look for... from what i have read on these speakers they were introduced in spring of 94, changed to V2 fall of 94 & version 3 was summer of 95. no mention of exact days or even weeks that i have found... maybe you can start keeping track of serial numbers on for sale epics to narrow down the dates they changed. on this thread someone mentioned 250 day of 95 being V3. best we have to go by is the cosmetic changes like port length, gray vs black mid horn & internal wire color. or maybe someone can ask roy @Chief boneheadif theres a record of it ???
  3. yes im aware of the wire differences, thats why i asked for inside pics to see the wires & confirm what version they are. but based on the serial number, these should be V3.
  4. nice looking epics. can you post some more pics showing the woofers & ports? & if possible pics of the insides, maybe a shot upwards inside the ports or pull a woofer real quick to show the wires inside? the reason i ask is because based on the serial numbers, these are late 1995 made speakers, V3 came out in the summer of 95. so being these are from mid sept of 95, chances are they are V3. nothing wrong with being V3, all versions of epics are great speakers, just trying to confirm what version they are for potential buyers. GLWS
  5. as others have mentioned, they are just dust caps & wont hurt or change the sound at all. a little know fact is that simply speakers sells just dust caps that are a perfect match for this style klipsch dust cap for a few bucks each, dont need a full recone to fix this. they will install right over the existing caps & leave a barely visible seam. or you can carefully cut out the old caps & install the new ones & they will look/fucntion as goood as new. on these fiber caps, a vac cleaner usually doesnt work to well, the indent & creases are much stronger than the non air tight seal from a vac cleaner. same with duct tape, majority of the time they will not pull out & if they do, the creases will be visible. buy new dust caps or just stick em in the cornere & you will never see them.
  6. based on his explanation, the replacement mid diaphram is not an upgrade, just an equal replacement if yours is damaged.
  7. yes thats the rationale i was speaking of, was told that the woofer cap does not work the same as the mid/hi caps & does not effect the sound or at least not enough to notice. but i can understand the pro series using a better cap for the woofer as it may last longer & hold up to the continuous higher power they may see compared to standard residential models.
  8. thanks for the explanation. what makes the bass better by not using an electrolytic cap in the woofer circuit? i always thought & was told by x-over gurus that the woofer circuit is just a dump & the cap type wont affect the sound. & using a poly cap that large in value is rather expensive for a questionable improvement in sound.... & can be difficult to place on most stock x-over boards.
  9. "natural cherry"? sure looks like oiled walnut... did the forte 2 even come in cherry?
  10. curious why the drop in x-overs would sound any different/better than replacing just caps? aren't the caps 99% of the sound in an x-over? if nothing was defective in the original x-overs, the drop ins should not sound any better than replacing caps on the stock x-overs. curious why you like the chorus better than the ch2? aside from the front ports on the chorus, the ch2 go lower & majority of people feel the tractrix mid horn is superior to the chorus mid horn. when placed properly the chorus 2 is better on paper & in design. & wouldn't they both respond equally well to improvements?
  11. yes this forum is a good place to sell them... lots of guys are looking for or want more chorus speakers. best of luck with whatever you decide on them!
  12. sorry to hear you arent very impressed with them. as was mentioned above, there are many variables that will determine how any speaker sounds, your current non horn speakers are likely not as efficient as klipsch so you are hearing things your ears are not used to. you may need to treat the room some as well. the x-overs could be degrading from age contributing to some of the harshness youre hearing. new caps may improve that if the original caps are falling out of spec, or you may not notice any audible difference as many that have changed caps have commented. worth a try to change them & the tweet diaphrams, but many people also say the TI tweets can be harsh or make what you are describing worse than the stock diaphrams. the x-overs only need the caps replaced to improve the sound, if they are functioning ok you dont need complete x-overs. & they don't need to be a certain brand cap most people on here suggest, you can use any decent quality capacitor, or spend big bucks for the boutique caps if you think you can hear a difference. with that being said, i own & have owned many klipsch speakers including the big heritage, as well as many other models from KG's to epics, & while i enjoy these klipsch speakers for certain music/recordings i will say they do have their issues, klipsch is one of the few speakers that people modify/upgrade/change so often to get a "better" sound from. play around with your chorus2 & see if you can get them to sound how you want without too much effort & money... if they dont work out for you, you can easily resell them & probably even make a few bucks!
  13. 2 posts up says they were sold in apr of 2018.

    Epic CF-4s - $2300

no mention of version or serial numbers? beautifull speakers but $2300??
  15. wasnt aware of the front boards being different colors between versions. the mid horn was a more greyish color on the v1, vs black for v2/v3. but the front boards are all the same black color based on what ive owned/seen or read about.
  16. those were just listed for sale here. some back & forth between members trying to get a price but sounded like he wanted $2500 for just the cf-4.s. funny the ad says they are version 1 & we should "do our homework" if we dont know what the system is... i think he needs to do some homework because serial numbers are 222day of 1995, they are definitely NOT version 1, they are version 2 or even very possibly version 3 being summer of 95.
  17. just curious if any members here got any of the 4 pairs of cf-4s that were for sale in the topeka/kansas city area yesterday? had a guy that just signed up yesterday send me & probably a few others a message about the cf4 & cf3 he had for sale. i saw the ad on CL for the cherry cf4s & they looked nice. we worked out a price & i was ready to arrange a trip (5hr one way) to buy one or more & before i could even think about the details, he emailed back saying the cherry pair sold. then within 1 hour said he got bombarded with emails for them & another guy showed up & bought 2 pair & another bought the last pair. so all 4 sold within 24 hours for very good prices (below $1000/pr). yet not a word about them in the alerts section or anyone posting about their new "epic" score yet. i hope they went to a member(s) here that will enjoy them as opposed to seeing them pop up for sale for outrageous prices by a flipper. so if you got any of them we would love to hear about them & see pics... otherwise keep your eyes out for some cf4's in the KC/topeka area for sale soon.
  18. strange.. so the tweet is blowing right away with just low volume? not sure what that could be related to the x-over will let other x-over gurus chime in on that one, they should be able to provide measurements with a meter to verify if teh x-over is bad. but you could still try swapping the x-over from the good speaker to see what happens, or save the chance of blowing another tweet & hope you can locate another single stock x-over or other used upgraded ones.
  19. the coils rarely if ever go bad unless physical damage or severe abuse from over powering etc. ive owned quite a few pairs of forte & forte2, chorus2 & many other vintage klipsch models & never had or heard of the other components going bad... its always the caps. if you can solder, its well worth $20 or less to buy the caps & swap them out. & if only one x-over/speaker has a problem you can swap the x-overs to see if that fixes the issue. could also be a bad mid/tweet diaphram causing the sound issue. best of luck finding what you want but if you're ok with 1 stock x-over, then a small investment & short time to swap caps is a very logical aproach to start with. also the caps im suggesting are physically the same size & will fit on the boards with no problems.
  20. why not just buy new caps & replace them yourself? or find a local place/person that can solder to do it? can be done with decent entry level caps that are far better than the cheap stock ones for about $20/pair.
  21. changing the caps in the x-overs from the cheap stock electrolytics is definitely an "upgrade." yes they are the same values but the stock caps are very low quality & OLD! changing to even the low price poly caps is an upgrade. the Ti tweets are a more personal opinion but i would not say "most people" find them harsh... from what i've read on here & other places "most" people love the TI tweets compared to stock. maybe 1 or 2 out of 10 say they are harsh. as for the question, i have never heard the F3's but speaker technology has not changed that much in ~30-40 years to justify a $3000 set of F3's that have the same basic technology... a box made of wood, a woofer with a passive radiator & horm mids/tweets, aside from different diaphrams in the mids/tweets, they are still the same basic design aside from some cosmetic changes.
  22. new or used? i have some nice KG series bookshelf/center for sale.
  23. ive read every post on here including yours... i dont see any direct answers to my question of if somone owns these subs & has compared them- 1 pb13 to 2 sb2000's. you posted graphs showing 1 pb13 vs 1 12nsd. posted a link about the sb2000 saying it has bad distortion, yet the review had nothing but positive things to say about it, as @Westcoastdrums stated in his comments. your other comments are about how i need dual 15" ported subs or nothing, "might as well just use the chorus2 without any subs" or that a pb13 is a childs toy compared to "your subs" basically bashing SVS in general. if you think i cant interpret those unrelated answers, i think you have a problem with basic reading comprehension & can't seem to acccept that many people out there dont want or need what you do. can we kindly put this to rest now please?
