  1. Is there a way to read the stories of the runners-up? All I see is the December submissions and the winning story. Now, as to the grand prize winning story. I find it absolutely appalling that that story won. Not only did the guy abandon his speakers for many years, but they were treated like trash by his family after he left. Then, and this tops everything, when the guy finds them again and they are dirty, he decides to burn them in a bonfire. The Belles were saved from being burned only because his friends interceded. Now, what were the judges thinking when this story won top prize? That Klipsch speakers are of the quality that it should come as no surprise that someone abandons his speakers for many years? that other people think they are garbage (and we're talking Belles here) and throw them in a junk room? and if they get dirty they should be destroyed? I really can't imagine a legitimate story that would reflect much worse on Klipsch. I just hope the award prize of a new pair of Klipschorns don't get dirty sometime.
  2. KJ, Some of the SACD/DVD-A combos (Pioneer's at least) have a *very* compromised SACD side. It is processed with PCM and pretty much negates any benefit of SACD. So if you get a combo, make sure to read thorough reviews first. Personally, I don't think DVD-A has much of a chance of surviving, so I would not be at all concerned with having that.
  3. Probably the most common praise of SACD is that it doesn't sound digital. There are thousands of posts and reviews on the web comparing it to good vinyl (without the *many* limitations inherent in vinyl). You have a huge range in price for SACD players, sometimes $125ish on an open box close-out, up to maybe $7000-$8000 for some forthcoming ones. All SACD players will play CDs, so you're not losing the ability to play your old collection. But no CD players will play SACDs. So if you buy just a CD player, you are closing yourself off from some terrific SACD recordings.
  4. John, If you want to buy a new CD player for a reasonable sum (you don't say what your dollar range is), buy an SACD player. All SACD players also play CDs, and some of them play DVDs too if you want to go that route.
  5. Maybe he didn't trust UPS!
  6. Worked great for me. Nice job, Kelly. There are a few misspelled words on the list of testing equipment page. Craig, you're gonna have to quit your day job.
  7. Here is a fascinating webpage: http://community-2.webtv.net/KerrB/VINTAGETUBEAMPHORN/page4.html
  8. Sorry, I wasn't paying attention to the hook-up described above. If you're just taking L and R out of a DVD machine, two speakers will be okay. I was thinking about DVD being 5.1 channels, and the idea being just to use the front L and R outputs of those 6 channels.
  9. Yes, did anyone notice today is 01/02/03. Kelly, I think this is the year you need to buy some Khorns. Never mind this no-corner excuse--you can build false corners. If you need money, sell some of the stuff you have stashed away that you'll never listen to again.
  10. Guy, I don't know about HT with two speakers, especially Khorns. A good center is the most important speaker for HT. And you aren't going to have the Khorns real close to your TV. If you use the TV speakers for the center, it's going to sound awful mixed with the Khorns. Most people here like the ALK crossover networks. You should read some threads on them in the archives. Probably most of them are in updating older speakers.
  11. TBrennan, Your negative reviews of those two speakers are classics. Thanks for the enjoyable reading. Makes me feel really sorry for the Horn and Straight 8s guys, though.
  12. Good deal, Craig. Maybe eBay and PayPal have changed in the last few years for the worse.
  13. sunnysal, PayPal, like some other firms, make it very confusing to do something they don't want you to do. Many have given up in frustration. This is from nopaypal.com: ***** How do I close my PayPal account? You'll have to log into your account first. Then click on "help," then "contact us" and then on the left click on "account basics," then "my profile," and the right bottom you'll see "How do I close my PayPal account?" We also recommend that you remove any checking and credit card accounts before you close your account. ***** eBay is also just as unhelpful when it comes to fraud; they are just polite about telling you that you are screwed. After their intensive week-long investigation, they sent me a form letter saying they are not responsible for anything and will not help on anything. After I wrote eBay back telling them I expected more than a form letter in response, they sent me this one: *************** I appreciate you keeping us updated on this matter. We have given you all the information that we will be sharing with you regarding this situation. Any further emails regarding this matter will be read, however, unless they contain any additional information that is pertinent to our ended investigation, may no longer be answered. Thank you for being a valuable member of our community. Regards, Oswald Fraud Prevention Group ********* Point being, eBay and PayPal work fine most of the time. But when you have a problem with someone, you are not only totally on your own, but eBay and PayPal go out of their way to protect the bad guys and put up roadblocks to you doing anything about the matter. I guess one way of looking at it is like the retail business--you know you're going to have a certain amount of theft and that's simply part of the cost of doing business.
  14. Pat, That ST-70 is in Peru! Not that I have anything against Peru, but it'd probably be expensive to ship and harder to get any satisfaction in case it was damaged in transit or not as advertised.
  15. Here is an informative page on the Eico ST-70. Probably a lot of this applies to the ST-40 as well. http://members.rogers.com/dnicoter/st70page.html
  16. For several months, when I was transferring and editing a number of tapes onto CDRs, I used a pair of Heresy II as my computer speakers (running my Mia soundcard outs to my amp). I have a five foot wide desk, but that still put them pretty close to the monitor, although not enough to distort the picture. Anyway, the sound was great even as very nearfield monitors. Like PWK said, 2/3 of a Klipschorn for 1/2 the price!
  17. If you are lucky, PayPal will work fine. If you ever run into trouble, you will understand fully why I have joined thousands of other people in spreading the anti-PayPal word. Yes, there are millions of happy campers, so the odds are in your favor of a pleasant transaction.
  18. Until a few days ago, I would have said PayPal is fine. I don't mind paying their percentage. However, if you ever have a problem with them--and I don't want to get into my particular case--you will rue the day you ever became invloved with them. PayPal is rude, belligerent, and impossible to deal with if there is a problem. Their attitude is "Too fu**ing bad, Buddy." I will never use them again. There are a number of anti-PayPal sites up on the internet if you run a search, including nopaypal.com and paypalsucks.com. They have plenty of horror stories. So, yes PayPal is fine when it works smoothly. But if you are one of their victims, you will learn what it means to be screwed over by script-reading customer service goons.
  19. I think all the pictures from the old forum got lost in the transition to the new one.
  20. PM is done with the Msg User button. Search is made with the Search the Klipsch Forums space at the top of the page. It'll go to a more advanced search if you just hit the Search button. I think the little house icon disappeared when the forum layout changed.
  21. Q-Man, Guy would probably have cut the price if you were going to pick them up yourself.
  22. That was a fantastic save. As far as worth, it all depends on condition and, like anything else, who wants them at the time you are selling. I believe there was a superb matching set of Khorns from the early or mid 1950s on eBay earlier this year that didn't go for any more than a more recent model. I'm thinking it was around $2500??? Sometimes people find bargains locally instead of on eBay, someone recently got a pair for $900, but a typical very good deal would be $1500. Khorns are expensive things to collect! Someone can give you a better idea on worth once you post pictures. If they look rough, they aren't worth as much as if they look pretty.
