  1. You might be better off sanding the surface smooth and applying a new veneer over the black finish. ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  2. John, What was the approximate cost of the cap changeover to Hovland? Were you able to find exact replacement values or did you substitute? ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  3. Thank you PWK. God rest your soul. My sympathies to your family and friends. ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  4. I am interested in refurbing some tube gear and would like to wire up a variac to bring the voltage up slowly. I bought this from a fellow who has no idea. I was wondering if anyone here might be able to help me. ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  5. I'd like to get a pair of the pie sice logos. Perhaps they could be offered on the heritage line? ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  6. When building khorns, did your shop follow a procedure similar to the one described on the speakerlab plans? The process shown can be difficult and problems with the fit/angles of some parts do not show up until later. I'd appreciate any insights you may care to share on checking fit and dry assembly of parts prior to glue up. What quality checks were performed during construction? ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  7. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Sometimes its just annoying... Ok, here it is. I have K-33-E woofs and I am building khorns from scratch. I have two sets of plans, 1946 PWK show the 6" slot and recent vintage speakerlab plans show a 3" slot. What size slot should I cut? ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  8. This forum is great! I've already received the second of the two articles by email. Thank you William. For you builders out there, it appears as though you can use either a 3" or 6" throat with no detectable difference in response. ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  9. Does anyone have the Bruce Edgar articles about his studies of the Klipschorn throat? There were two published in Speaker Builder magazine. The first was in the 4/90 issue and the second in the 6/90 issue. ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  10. The AA crossovers will work. I would try them first and only upgrade if there is a reason to. I have a pair of AA that I will be using for my khorn project. ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  11. I got all the drivers from a set of LaScalas for my Khorn project. The woofers are K-33, 15 inch and the squawker horns are huge. You would not be able to get bigger ones into the Khorn cabinet. I'm pretty sure this set is identical to the khorn driver set. ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs This message has been edited by hetmann on 04-14-2002 at 09:49 AM
  12. Just a little update for everyone following this thread... I have been building a couple of half size khorns to practice and see how things go together before ruining a bunch of expensive material. I have been following the Speakerlab plans closely and for the most part things are going together well. The angles specified for the edges of pieces are pretty good and have gone together well. You definately want to make some jigs to help with accurate cuts. I have also discovered that it is very helpful to scribe a centerline on almost all the pieces as this helps in getting everything to line up during assembly. And I have found a couple of changes I plan to make to the full size cabinets to ease their construction. ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  13. I do not see the "notch" Gil is talking about on my Speakerlab plans. I presume these are the latest version they produced. I'm happy to share my PWK plans, email me offline. ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  14. You know I'll have to defer to others more knowledgeable than I on this one. I have heard various snippets about throat size and conducted numerous searches on the topic here in the forums. At this point, I just don't know. I have heard that it matters and it doesn't matter. Oh baby I just don't know! ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  15. I'd be happy to post my progress if anyone is interested. So far, I have acquired the drivers and plans. I wish there was someone in the Denver area with some khorns I could look at for construction details. And of course I would love to hear them (hint, hint). It's been over 20 years since I've heard these. I have AA crossovers and plan to use those initially. The 1946 plans are sketchy and presume you know how these go together. They show the larger 6" throat. Since I have K33 woofs, I will be using the 3" throat unless someone here can tell me different. I plan to use the best 1/2" baltic birch I can find with cherry veneer on the visible surfaces. ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs
  16. I am currently involved in a similar project. I have the drivers from a set of LaScalas and two set of khorn plans. One is from Speakerlab and the other are PWK originals from 1946. I feel as though I am a pretty good cabinet maker, but these plans are challenging! There are many odd angles to cut and everything needs to fit perfectly and be air tight. My advice to you is, if the cabinets you are looking at are reasonably priced and genuine or well made copies grab them. If they are knockoffs made from partical board or MDF, pass on them. I'm waiting for the warmer weather to start mine and am building a 1/2 size set in the interim. If I could find some real khorns, I'd snap them up in a minute. ------------------ Klipschorns and Moondogs This message has been edited by hetmann on 03-25-2002 at 10:49 PM
  17. Provided your parts are disassembled, you can also bake the krylon onto your metal pieces. Search the seb for "japaning" for instructions. Tool collectors do this to planes they are restoring.
  18. Rear chamber volume for K-Horn is about 87 liters.
  19. In New York area. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1334688907
  20. There is a review of these little amps in the current Listener magazine. The reviewer is fairly tepid in his enthusiasm. Sort of put me off from giving them a try.
  21. What do you mean your AA's are too old? Perhaps they just need a cleaning/rehab. What have you done to them so far? Perhaps you could use the transformers from the AA's you have to build your own ALK xovers.
  22. I have quite a collection of LPs going back to the early 70s. My problem is, some of those things have been played a 1000 times. I took care of my albums, but I'm not convinced they sound better than a well mastered CD. Comments?
  23. Just a word of caution... This is non-glued veneer and you will have a hard time getting it on as well as the veneer applied to plywood at the factory. I have a birdseye veneered table table that has developed air bubbles. They are a bear to fix.
  24. If you enclose the backs of Khorns and then get a room with suitable corners, could you just leave the backs on or would it be better to remove them for corner placement?
  25. Would it be possible to post a picture of the vintage style horn? I have never seen one.
