  1. I always thought it was because he played Knute Rockne in a movie in 1940. Jim N
  2. Did not stop Soros and the bunch at MoveOn did it? Jim N
  3. We have already fallen off the edge. The recently passed campaign finance reform act is a direct assault on the 1st Amendment. Congress shall pass no law...yadayada. Jim N
  4. Big, I suggest you try Miles' Live Evil. I don't think you will find it boring. Jim N
  5. I have just gone thru major mods to my vinyl system. The biggest bang for the buck was to decouple the drive motor from the turntable. The other major factor was the addition of lead plate, on the TT platter ( higher polar moment of inertia) and in the arm mount. Get a basic belt drive TT and then make mods to it. Jim N

  7. As a kid, I shared a bedroom with my brother who was a ham. -.-. --.- is forever burned into my brain. Jim N
  8. I have a pair of TriPath 2020 eval boards running my 828/1005s in biamped mode. I have not made the suggested mods to the input/output caps. For $100 each, they are hard to beat. For casual listening they are hard to beat. Idle draw is just about zero amps. 10 watts on the bass is a little light for 100Db+ listening but for back ground listening they are just fine. When I get serious I fire off my Rowland 5 (150 watts) and 8 watt SET. Jim N
  9. They seem to go for $800 to $1200 on Ebay. Depends on the individual deal. I have a pair of raw birch, 1978's that I am thinking about selling. I was thinking of offering them at $1000. Jim N
  10. I would be tempted to build my own. You can get 4 Eichmann bullet plugs for about $30 and 25 feet of 27 ga teflon coated silver wire for $60. Unless you have real problems with RFI, a twisted pair of wires is very good. You can also twist them around some foam caulk backer and get very low capacitance . silver wire: http://www.a-msystems.com/physiology/wirerod/silvertef.aspx Bullet plugs: pwolber@portal.ca Jim N
  11. Unfortunately it is a case of the fox guarding the hen house. It is the ABA that disciplines lawyers. Sort of like the politicians passing laws that apply to every enterprise except themselves. Jim N
  12. I have lost count of the number of Class Action lawsuits that have been filed on my account over the years. I dont think I have ever received anything from them. I suspect that the lawyers who filed the suits did collect. Jim N
  13. If you look at the FBI uniform crime reports (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/02cius.htm), an interesting observation can be made. For the most part white people kill white people and black people kill black people. Total murders for each race is about the same. The murder rate is greatly different. The rate among whites is on par with that of Western Europe. GB and Japan are anomalies. Jim N
  14. Anybody have any experience with these? Looks like you can get in for less the $1500, if you are willing to do some work. I would use my SME III arm on it. http://www.teresaudio.com/index.html Jim N
  15. Disregarding the $70K airbearing TT, what is the table bearing design on modern TTs. My old (30 Years) Sony has a polished sleeve bearing with a ground ball at the bottom for axial support. I think that at one time Well Tempered used a version of this but with individual lateral bearing blocks. Jim N
  16. Have you seen the boxes that Kimber Kable ships their illumination cable in? Puts the little box thay my wife 2 ct. engagment ring in to shame. Jim N
  17. From another Ebay sale of the same: A VINTAGE MARANTZ STEREO RECEIVER MODEL# 2330B, 110/120/220/240VOLTS, 50Hz Looks like at least some of them have the capability of operating at multilpe voltages. Not being a EE geneus, I don't think there is much of a problem with operating it at 60 Hz vs 50 Hz. I I think it matters if you are running motors, speed is a function of freqency. Jim N
  18. How about this: Brilliant Pebbles is a unique room and system tuning device for improving the performance of any audio system. Brilliant Pebbles is a 3-inch glass bottle that contains a variety of minerals and semi-precious stones; highly specialized preparation/assembly techniques contribute significantly to its effectiveness. Brilliant Pebbles effectively converts unwanted mechanical and acoustic vibration to thermal energy. A bottle is usually effective on/above each output transformer of tube amps, on top of CD and SACD players above the transport section and on top of solid state amps above the output section. When placed on the floor in room corners (two corners are sufficent to produce very good results), Brilliant Pebbles reduces comb filter effects produced by high sound pressure levels in room corners. Price $99 each. Jim N
  19. My priority for my music reproduction system is to replicate the 3 piece standup, no name group that I used to listen to in a small bar in Cincinnati oin 1965. Friends of mine who went down the road of HE, tended to settle on speakers with low phase shift, for good imaging. They also used TT with ET air bearing arms. They could resolve the opening cut of Dark Side of the Moon. However they lacked dynamic range. I tried Theil 3.6s and like them, except for the fact that I tended to blow out the mid range drivers on a regular basis at $400 a pop. So then I drug out my La Scalas and gave them a chance again. Was not impressed. After a trip to the ChiTown Horn Fest, I was taken by the way the Altec vintage systems performed. I first tried 511/802s on my LS bases. I have settle on Altec 515/828 and 288/1005s. Drop a pair of 511/802s on your Khorns and you will be amazed. I have a spare pair if you would like to borrow them. See Qman in Fl for the ultimate in replacements for the K400/K35s. You have an open invitation to come by and listen to them the next time you come down for a hocky match.
  20. I love Christmas. It is that happy time of the year when dysfunctional families get together and have a knock down drag out fight before the turkey is served. Jim N
  21. Try some Wayne Shorter. Taht ought to wake you up. Jim N
  22. I think that was 1975 dollars. I will admit that I have started listening to my 300B more. It does sound better than my back up digital amps. Reminds me of my favorite RV bumber sticker:' We are out squandering our children's inheritance". Jim
  23. A friend of mine picked up a AR D200 to drive his Acustats. Sounded great until he figured it was about $1/hour in tube cost. Traded them in for a pair of Adcom 555s. It would appear to me that the magic of tubes (if there is any) would disappear with multiple output tubes. If you go PP and high out put, how is that nay different than SS. I think the real beauty of tubes is having one and only one doing all of the work. No crossover distortion. And you get to audition each tube to see if you like it's characteristics. Jim N
