  1. http://www.passlabs.com/pdf/powersupply.pdf At the end of this article, N Pass recommends 15 pounds minimum per $1000 of amp. Jim N
  2. Try http://www.sacdinfo.com/ for an extensive list of SACD titles. Jim N
  3. That is the best arguement against the RIAA clamp down on music swapping. The Dead had one of the best sales records in history in spite of large quantities of bootleg material out there. Jim N
  4. For nominal listening, I bi-amp my Altec rig with a pair of TriPath 2020's at a rip snorting 8 w/ch. For critical listening, I fire off my 8 w SET/Rowland 5. Jim N
  5. Question for DJK. The Levinson site claims that when bridged, the amp sees the load as 1/2 of it rated impedence. Thus a 4 ohm nominal will look like a 2 ohm load. I got the impression that bridging amps was only recomended for high nominal impedence speakers. JIm N
  6. I have been trying to find a Berenek for some time with no luck. I did check out a copy from the local University and read thru it. I have a 1950s copy of Kinslers Acoustics. They are very similar and Kinslers book is still available. Jim N

  8. C&S Did you see this thread on the Altec BB? (http://www.hostboard.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3729&t=376)How is your speaker project coming. I am tempted to do the 828 cabinet mods as soon as I can find another JBL 2205. Jim N San Jose
  9. I have a Sony SCD-777ES. Bought it used and it is very nice. 2 Ch only. I have just about given up my CEC/MSD upsampling DAC combo for CD playback. About a week back, the Sony quit reading CD's. Sony said send it back to LA and they would fix it. I took the top off (easy) and brushed off the lens. Back to working order. Hard to beat at the price ($1500). Jim N
  10. I think there is a difference between being anal and having more money than Gates. Jim
  11. I installed a new set of 300B's two months back. Tonight when I tuned the system on, I had high distortion in the HF channel on one speaker (I biamp). Swapped tubes and the problem went away. What do I treat the pins with to make the problem go away forever. My previous set of tubes never caused me this problem. Jim N
  12. I posted this site last October and forgot about it until your question. Not specifically for Khorns but good ideas. http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue3/maroom.htm Jim N
  13. For a great recording try the Stereophile jazz CD "Rendezvous". It is almost as clean as my SACD's. The music is not bad either. Jim N
  14. A priest, a murderer and an engineer are set for the guillotine. The priest first up is offered face up or face down. He chooses face up so to view his maker at the last moment. The blade comes down but stops just short. A miracle and his live is spared. The murderer chooses the same option with the same result. The engineer also chooses the same face up option, and just as the blade is to be released he proclaims, I think I see your problem. Jim N, Engineer
  15. Well you can always ease into Coltrane with the Julie Andrews favorite, Coltrane's version of "My favorite things". Another "easy" listening Coltrane is "A Love Supreme" Jim
  16. Ahmad Jamal "The Essence" Ellington "Blues in Orbit" Wayne Shorter and for new stuff there is Rachel Z and Norah Jones My all time favorites are Migus and Coltrane but you have to really like Jaz to like them.
  17. I have a Rowland preamp that has a balanced, an RCA and an inverted RCA (3 total) outputs. I am currently driving a sub with one of the RCAs and a Rane xover with the balanced outputs. I would like to drive a second Rane with the other RCA and then thru a pair of Tripath amps and then to the same speakers. If I promise to never turn on both systems at the same time, is there any other probelms that might happen? Jim N
  18. In small quantities (1# sizes) plumbers putty and duct seal are the same price. I think that duct seal is a better product and if it is what I think it does not seem to harden over long (years) period of time. I have 6 #'s on each of my 511B horns and they are very dead. Sticks better, too. Jim N
  19. Piece of cake. I am now considering putting in a center, post supported, ridge beam to carry half of the roof load, 2x12 rafters with acoustic covering ( to approximate anechoic conditions). I think most of the work will be demolition with out trashing the rest of the house. It could probably be done in stages. Take off the roof, put on new roof, move out, take out original ceiling. Fortunately I live in California, so we have a 6 month work season without rain. Jim N
  20. I am in the preliminary design stages of blowing out the wall between my LR and adjacent BD. It is a load bearing wall so I have to consider adding a new support. I can: 1) slip in an I-beam and keep the original ceilings (9 feet) or 2)blow off 1/2 the roof and put in scissor trusses to get a cathedral ceiling, peak height maybe 12-13 feet. the finished room will be 29 by 22, with the cathedral peak 14 1/2 out from the walls. There is about a 20% increase in room volume, cathedral to leaving the 9 ft ht. Is this a significant change in the room acoustics? There is always the cost benefit ratio. Jim N
  21. There is currently a pair on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3021564059&category=14993 Jim N
  22. Can I bridge these. Looks like all of their current amps that put out high power run at 31 volts. Hard to come by 31 volts. Jim
  23. Dean, That is because your preamp does not have enough outputs. My pre has 3 outputs. Balanced and singled ended + & -. I drive my sub off of one output and the rest off of the other. Jim N
  24. I will give that a shot. How about the other mods you recommended for the 1101? Not sure I know how do that. They sound great out of the box. Any simple improvement would be icing on the cake. At some point I will try them on the bass to see if they have enough umph. Maybe on my LS's. Jim
