I finally picked up a Tripath eval board (EB-TA2020), 10 watts/channel. I just plugged it into a car battery and put in my system as the HF amp in a bi-amped setup. I am using 802Ds on 511B horns. It is not bad for $100. I put in place of a 300B SET. I have not listened long enough (LT 1 hour) nor gone back to compare with the 300B, but it will easily fill the need for casual or background sound. Jim N

Look at the pictures of these LS on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14980&item=3019459149. I did this to mine and it made a world of difference in the bass. If you cut the wedges to the exact angle, you can just put them in place and tap them with a rubber hammer. Friction will hold them in place. I spit one out occationaly but only under high listening levels. Jim N

Are these transformers wound just like standard transformers? With both a primary and secondary set of coils? If so, what are the typical winding ratios? Jim N

I think I have found a source for tripath products. Now I have to decide which one to get. I am leaning towards the 2020 (2x10 watts) because it runs at 13.5 volts and I can run it off of a standard 12v car battery, rather than the 2024 which runs at 12 volts. Any advice? Jim N

My mother used to try to get my brother and me to keep the spider webs cleaned out of our rooms ( we lived in a converted unattached garage). After finding a scorpion trapped in one web, we were reluctant to do that anymore. At least the spiders stayed on the walls. You could find scorpons anywhere, Jim N ( of Dallas)

I, too, was unacquainted with Lee Morgan. So I got myself over to Streetlight and picked up the only 3 CDs that they had. Definitely worth the effort. Put him on the buy list. As an aside, how do you guys keep up with what you have in stock when you get into the buying mode, so that you dont double buy. I seem to have double copies of several people. Good start, but I think I would fill them with sand. You could probably reduce the thickness between the walls to 1 1/2 inches to reduce the total weight. 4 ft x 4 ft x1 1/2in of sand is only 200 pounds. Jim N

As a mechanical engineer, when I took the required EE courses 40 years ago I slept thru most of them, but I seem to remember that AC voltmeters are not linear over wide frequency bands. Just how big a problem is this considering the audio range. Will most modest cost AC volt meter be good enough up to 20 Khz? Jim N

I talked to Sophia this morning. He says that they decided to put their name on the Chinese mesh plates to distinguish theirs from the bulk marketing. Sophia claims that they only pick the good ones from each batch. I know that firedrill from working on the transistor production lines at TI in the early 60s. So I ordered up a pair. You might want to read the write up on The Exempler Project (http://invalid.ed.unit.no/~dunker/jeffjohn.html). They say this about the 816 vs the 828 cabinets. Of course, these guys were looking for price-no-object perfection. "Nice looking system; small footprint, tuned at 40 Hz, crossover at 800 Hz, 16 Ohm impedance. It sounded good in most respects but the midrange was not as articulate as the A7. The reason turned out to be standing waves created between the parallel non-flared sides of the 816 horn. With the sides at 16.125 inches the fundamental resonance was at 419 Hz. Altec avoided this standing wave problem in the A7 bass horn with non-parallel surfaces for the short horn sides. An additional effect of the parallel sides in the 816 was a higher horn cutoff due to a smaller mouth area compared to the A7, 177 Hz versus 160 Hz for the A7. These problems made a smooth transition out of horn loading more difficult." But you really have to read the whole article. Jim N

I live in the South Bay (San Jose) where it is about 70/30 against Bush and the war (if you can call it that) with Iraq. The local are not going to be pleased when the Iraqis capitulated with almost no loss of civilian life. It will harm their rant about Bush. You know, he was selected not elected. I have read articles that compare Bush with Cooper in High Noon, but I keep flashing on Butch and Sundance wondering just "who are those guys?" The psychological effect of seeing those armered units barrreling across the desert must not sit well. Especially knowing that they are backed up with Blackhawks and JDAM's. I am thinking of ordering a batch of Crows from my relatives in Texas and having a large BBQ for my neighbors. Jim N
