  1. I'm not a big Stereophile defender (although I do like Dudley very much), but I don't think that this is accurate. My recollection was that Stereophile's reader surveys reported a much much lower average amount spent on a system. Although it is not a *small* amount by any means, in this month's issue John Marks reports that the average reader (not person at large obviously) spends 12k - 15k on their system (p. 47). FWIW.
  2. 188, 194, 195, 156, 110, 135, 52, 64, 80, 82, 93, 98, 15, 26, 30, 47, 50 I can pick 'em up, if you've got time some day. I'll email you my ph. no.
  3. Congrats...This is certainly a scary time. It seems like every day brings a new horror story from someone I know. I just had dinner with a friend who has a small business here in Chicago (coffee shop / bean roaster / wholesaler). He posted a job opening for a receptionist on CL at $11/HR and received NINE HUNDRED responses on day 1.
  4. Diamonds have intrinsic value. Do Gucci bags cost $16,000? I dunno. Nope. Diamonds are the same thing. It is just a smaller market. Actually - since ALL cables actually do something, they might have more "intrinsic value."
  5. It is not. A'gon is owned by Arnie Chinta.
  6. I'm a Harley owner (wife has a Ducati), but it has always struck me as a bit girly how Harley dudes have to play dress up on their bikes with the shiny stuff.
  7. Howdy guys (and girls?)...been a while since I stopped by. New job has been keeping me busy (not to mention a 1 and 3 yr. old). Hope everyone's summer was great. Anyway, I read the following regarding price hikes on the 'gonon the Asylum and thought it would be of interest here. Apologies if it has been mentioned. Cut and pasted from Audio Asylum: --- It had been $6 to post a classified ad, and that was it. Now it is $4 to post, but they then add a fee of 1.5% of the selling price. For a fairly ordinary $1,000 piece of equipment that hikes the Audiogon cost from $6 to $19. That's an increase of over 200%. A $2,000 item would cost $34 to sell so the rate hike gets more onerous as the cost of the item increases.
  8. That is joessportster here on the forum. Erik - Yeah - One was lost in shipping. Ron told me to send it back to him for a refund. After that he went into hiding. Literally.
  9. Correct. Ron will NOT answer. If he does, though, please remember to ask if he will either send me my amps or refund my $1800 from September of 2006.
  10. I like the looks of that Baldwin. Seems to be a GREAT value. Enjoy!
  11. Thanks for all of the replies. I appreciate the feedback. Because the boxes were (apparently!) not totaled, I suspect that any claim would have otherwise been denied by FedEx anyway. Not that I am excusing the buyer...I should definitely be afforded the chance to TRY TO make a claim. And, in light of the facts that 1.) the packing was not damaged and 2.) he had issues with the missing screws 2 weeks prior to notifying me that the volume was messed up, makes me think that it is certainly *POSSIBLE* that he damaged the unit while fiddling with it. Packing must have been sufficient...he wrote me to tell me that he was reusing it to send the unit for repairs!
  12. Thanks for the responses guys. I used FedEx and buyer accepted delivery on June 27. As such, the time for filing a claim has expired. Yeesh! The buyer seems like a stand up guy. By that I mean my gut tells me that it was probably dinged in shipping as opposed to him messing it up somehow. BUT I really don't know what happened. I just get a bad vibe from this "settle this" business. That statement seems awfully presumptuous in this case in light of the delay. If its a cheap repair I can see helping out in just to keep my Audio-Karma bank in the positive; if it is a massive repair I just don't see a compelling reason to lend a hand given that I should have been able to at least make a claim for damages from FedEx.
  13. So here is the deal: I recently (but not THAT recently, as you will see) sold a fairly expensive preamp (Wavac) on A'gon for $3,000. It was, in my opinion, well-packed. A little over a week after the buyer accepts delivery, he contact me to say that he has opened the boxes and that there is a problem with all three of the volume knobs (a master + 2 trim). It seems these knobs had fallen off in shipment. Well, because of how it was packed, THAT wasn't possible. What actually happened was that the tiny TINY screws that hold the knobs on were apparently no longer in place and that was causing the knobs to fall off. I had one of those screws fall out on the master volume knob, so I believe that is possible. The unit was shipped with all of the screws. I advised the buyer to carefully check all packing materials to find the screws. No luck. OK. No biggie. They are tiny and would have easily been lost. They can be obtained from the company. At this point I hook him up with the Wavac distributor and my local dealer. Today, 2+ weeks later, I am contacted again. The buyer has allegedly just got around to listening to the unit (which he could have done w/o the knobs) and tells me that none of the volume controls work. They can still be turned w/o the knob or with the remote, so I suspect that there IS an actual problem with the unit. MY problem is that the buyer is sending the unit for repairs and writes me that he will get in touch with me later to see "how we can settle this." A few additional fun facts: Delivery was one month ago; Buyer says no shipping damage to boxes but does not respond to my question about whether he still has them; positive feedback LEFT FOR ME ON A'GON ALREADY complimenting my packing!!! Unit, of course, was *FINE* when it left my hands. Am I being a jerk here because my initial reaction is that this is not my problem anymore given that his inaction has basically hung me out to dry on any recovery from the shipper?
  14. No sympathy at all for the guy that SF was dealing with, but just so you know.... Buying an item just to leave a negative feedback for something totally unrelated to the item is a violation of eBay rules and can result in suspension or other penalties. Also it is grounds for removal of the negative feedback. How would this be proven? SF bought the item and posted negative feedback about the seller's poor customer service 1 minute and 21 seconds after the purchase. Clearly the comment could not have been about poor customer service on this transaction. The seller should easily come out on top in this deal. But, apparently not being overly bright, this seller decided to do his own rule violation. He is no longer permitted to leave a negative feedback as a seller, so he left a positive feedback with a negative comment. That is a violation of eBay rules and can result in suspension or other penalties. Also this is grounds for removal of the positive feedback with the negative comment. Violations all around. That makes perfect sense assuming there were no issues with the second transaction. I have, on the other hand, no sympathy for the seller in this instance.
  15. What a beauty. I never heard the Moth 2a3, but I've always admired their Jules Verne approach to design.
  16. Anybody here buy these? They were painted black, but look like a pretty great buy if you live close enough?
  17. Hey that is MY living room table! Those were great little doggies. To complete the ownership tale, we should remember the original owner and builder was Thom Mackris of Galibier turntables.
  18. I believe that the Moondogs, when new, assembled with the ultimate upgrades approached the $2000 mark. It would have been a bit more with those birdseye maple bases.
  19. Not good. That gives me sellers remorse over the Wright 2a3 amps (with the Sowter trannies) that I recently sold. REALLY great guy and really nice gear for the $$.
  20. That certainly is possible. Further listening this evening has, thus far, confirmed my initial impression. I'll be listening to ALOT of different music to flush out the differences and see which I like better with what. I can't say for certain, but the PX-2 may just beat the Thorens on classical (chamber music anyway). Really hard to draw any real conclusions, I guess, given the different arms and carts. This is fun!
  21. Hmmm... Beautiful price too. Looks great.Bruce Well if one were to buy it new, that is true. It is expensive. However, this one is used and, ironically, cost just a bit north of what I paid for the Moondogs that you currently have. I don't know if that was a typical used price, though.
  22. Thanks Pete! Weird. It looks normal on my computer and flips on the forum. This forum HATES Macs!! Nice table, BTW. Really nice. Yours was sourced from Micro Seiki according to my new bible for 70's and 80's audio...The Vintage Knob. OK. I'm done pimping that site.
  23. One other change that has made a VAST improvement in my system was the replacement of the Rowland 112 with an Air Tight ATM-1, shown above, using the el34. A drop of about 100 watts and a much much much improved sound. That Rowland was so steely in the mids that I could only comfortably listen for an hour at a time. I was very surprised and disappointed. The Air Tight also has the best build quality that I have ever seen. Beautifully hand wired.
