Nice to see this thread come back to life. I bought a second "vintage" one a couple of years back. I'll have to get a picture of it. Same late 90s as my original one. Not sure how helpful it will be but this box top is a nice reference if you are shopping ebay and want a specific color combo and the seller has included the numbers. Note the 1996 copyright upper right.

Has anyone had luck with the sites that tell you how to refresh your LL? Mine 2nd one is cloudy and while the lava moves it turns in to tiny blobs after a start up of long strands that looks like Silly String. Nothing like my original or my sisters from 60/70. I really want to get mine back to perfection, but don't want to ruin it or make it worse than it already is. Since I make my own beer I have a bottle capper so no problem sealing it back up.

Cool, Thanks for the repair link. I do know that the chemistry changed from the earlier models to the newer ones. Maybe the older ones used Carbon Tetrachloride? I’ll have to go back and re-read the info. I find that I don’t retain useless knowledge nearly as easily as I used to. I’ve recently ordered a new one myself. I’ll post a picture as soon as it arrives. I used Lava Lite’s custom design option. It may be hideous, sometimes my taste is questionable.

  2. For what it’s worth I’ve got a pair of 1983 HBRs very similar to yours. Same crossovers & drivers. I also have a pair of 1980 HBRs. In my opinion the ‘83s (version 1.5?) are the better of the two pairs. They just seem to have better bass, and Just a fuller sound. Interestingly, I’d always assumed they had the same components,  and thought the difference must be in my head. At least until recently when I opened them up and saw the difference.

If your LS-s have lived primarily in a residential setting, then most likely there won't be much "dust or debris" to be found in the bass bins.  A few months ago I changed out the original K-33s for a set of Crites woofs and was surprised to see how clean the insides were - see pics.  But then, I've owned these from Day 1 which was back in '76, and my 'Scalas have always been inside the house.  If yours have been stored away in a shed or barn for any length of time, then the interior of your bass bins might look quite a bit different.

Nice. Thank you for the info and pics. That is good to know. I only known the last four years or so since I’ve had them. The previous 36 years were I believe spent indoors in residential duty, but who knows. They were clean enough when I got them, just needed a little TLC to shine ‘em up. I’m now in less of a hurry to open them up, and I wasn’t in much of a hurry to do it at all.
So did you replace the woofers as a repair, or update? How did they sound?

  4. I’ve had a little time to test the replacements. The first go was terrible,  it took me an extra half hour to do the push mowing, because I was fighting with the damn earphones. At first they paired up immediately, after that I could not get them both to pair at the same time. 🤬

Tested them again while puttering in the garage. No pairing issues all was good. The only functional issue is keeping the left one in place, it will eventually fall out into a non recoverable situation. Mowing went well except for the two times the left one fell out.
The sound quality is good, not as good as my wired Beats, but good.
It is very likely that these won’t be my last wireless earphones, but I’m going to hang with them a bit longer.
Hopefully the next generation will address these issues

I have actually found that in most instances, it is easier to get a good blend with the main speakers by using the speaker level sub inputs.

    Shakey

Interesting. It seems that many newer powered subs only offer line level Inputs. I guess I’ve always assumed that was best. I’ve had the room torn apart today and wasn’t able to test it out. I’ll let you know how it goes. Thank you for the “input”, it is much appreciated.

The speaker level inputs on a sub plate amp will present very little additional load to your tube amp output. You should be OK to tie the Heresys and plate amp in parallel (with a Y connection as you say). Does Yung spec the input impedance of the speaker level input?

Thank you. I thought it was probably safe but, as they say, there are no stupid questions. The Input Impedance is not specified. At least not that I’m able to locate.

  7. The other day I hooked up my Onix SP3 tube amp, and a turntable to a pair of Heresys. I hadn’t ran this set up in a few years. The last time I did, I didn’t even own a subwoofer (Unless you count the factory sub in my WRX). I’ve since, seen the truth and the way, and wanted to add a subwoofer. Obviously, there is no sub pre-out on the Onix. Which leaves the speaker inputs on a Yung 300 Plate Amp. This amp only has the input with no “speaker out”,  so this means a “Y” sort of connection to the speakers and sub amp. The question is; does this create any sort of load that could possibly damage the Onix?
I think the answer is “no”, but my electrical theory is limited mostly, to questionable solder work, and turning off the breaker before installing a ceiling fan.

Thanks for all the replies so far everyone.

I just found some La Scala II's at a reasonable price. If I were to run a THSPUD or TubaHT, could it function as the "table" for the components? The idea of rattling tube gear does not sound good to me, however maybe horn loaded subs act differently.

I’ve just built a Table Tuba. It’s a sturdy piece of gear for sure. But you can feel vibration through the cabinet. Then again you can feel it everywhere in the room. It would probably be too much for tube gear, but with some isolation, maybe ? It would probably be ok for solid state though. I guarantee you’ll like the TT with La Scalas,

  9. I’ve got RP-280Fs in  a similar room to yours.  I’m using a Bill Fitzmaurice designed T18 that I built last year. It pairs quite well with the 280Fs. It might not go quite as low as you are looking for, but it sounds great, and fills the room with nice bass. Great subs at a great price, if you don’t mind a little DIY. To be honest, it would be better with a pair of them but my WAF only allows for one, tucked into a corner.

Just as the title states. The update bricked my left earbud. any ideas on how remedy?

I had the same issue when attempting the firmware update on a brand new pair. Klipsch agreed to a warranty replacement, as mine were less than 48 hours old. I hope yours were still under warranty. Even if they weren’t, imho Klipsch is responsible as it was their update that caused the problem.
I don’t think their is any sort of “fix”, as customer service didn’t even suggest anything to try.
It took nearly four weeks to get my replacements. Which are still working, with no issues. In case you are wondering; No, I’ve not attempted any firmware update.

Emailed Klipsch Aug 4 about my bricked T5s. Today (Aug 11) got a canned response telling me they are busy. I'm guessing a lot of unhappy T5 owners.

They agreed to my warranty claim rather quickly. Of course I’d only had mine, maybe 36 hours, before I made the first contact. It took nearly four weeks to receive them after Klipsch agreed to replace them. It seemed to require a couple of those, we’ve been busy emails, and a bit of back & forth before they shipped replacements. Good luck, & keep after them. They had to know the Firm ware  update was problematic, yet they seem to continue it. Good luck!

  12. Update: I received my replacements yesterday! Nearly four weeks after the problem. However Klipsch was good on their word and did replace them, with brand new units. I must say, I think these might sound a bit better than my first pair. Of course I only used them for a day before the failed “firmware” update. So, it’s  tough to say for sure. I’m satisfied with their resolution, although it could’ve been a bit more, timely. I for sure can guarantee I will NOT be attempting a “firmware update” on these.

    Fool me once...

  13. When I first bought my 1980 La Scalas. I replaced the whole crossover network with Crites AA replacements. Because I wanted to leave the originals unchanged. Just in case. To my ears, they sounded exactly the same as the originals. I’m sure the original capacitors were due for replacement, but I really didn’t hear a difference. I later replaced the tweeters with the Crites CT120s. I thought this was a huge improvement. It just sounded “smoother”. Horns always sound good on La Scalas, with the CT120s I think they sound better. I’ve heard great things about the MAHL by  DaveA. I learned about them after I’d bought the CT120s, I still might give them a try.
I still need to open up the bass bin and clean them out. I’ve heard a lot of dust and debris can gather in there and can deaden the sound. I’ve also heard this is best done outside, and I just haven’t had the enthusiasm to haul them outside to do it.

  14. A few weeks ago I set up some old KSB-1.1 speakers in the bar on the patio. I powered them with a Dayton Audio DTA2.1BT2 class D amp. I know these aren’t outdoor speakers, but they  are plastic, have metal grills, and were just lying around. I figured I’d give it a go. This set up sounded surprisingly good especially for the small investment required. As I wasn’t content to leave well enough alone and the Dayton Amp has a subwoofer channel. I concluded that I needed a subwoofer. I had some scrap 3/4” exterior plywood, and an 8” DCS-2054 Dayton subwoofer driver that was originally going to go into my TT sub build. After a few hours effort, some guesswork, and literally no extra money spent, I had a functional subwoofer. The Dayton amp powers the speakers and my Spare Parts Subwoofer  quite well, and rounded out this simple backyard system.. Maybe not enough to “Piss off the neighbors”, but possibly enough to annoy them.

One reason I prefer wired buds....even if I do increase the risk of getting strangled with the wires while I crawl around on my tractor or backhoe....

Hope you all get this resolved.

I’m willing to risk strangulation. It’s the “pop” as the wire catches on the mower handle, or tree branches and simultaneously rips both earbuds from my ears. That I couldn’t take. 😂

I have had the same issue with the firmware update. I am on my second pair because the during the process the left bud updated fine and the right one kept getting and error message. I followed all of the directions I could find online. Finally after a few tries the right bud locked up. I am having the same issue now: Left one updates just fine and right one gets and error. Any suggestions would be great.

Update: in less than 12 hours the right bud stopped working entirely. Lights flash but there is no sound. I tried several factory resets and I hear no sounds like "ready to pair" or drumbeats...😀

Thank you again for your time.

We are in the same boat, albeit with different sides. My scenario literally mirrors yours, except this is my first pair. Klipsch has agreed that as mine were still under warranty, and are going to replace them. They spent no time offering any solution, at least beyond replacement. I’m guessing there is no “solution”. I had heard nothing from them since they agreed to replace them, I sent an email asking for an update. They finally responded this morning with basically “ They’ve been busy”. Possibly busy replacing earphones that were damaged by the update?
I hope they will replace yours as well. Especially as it is a Klipsch “update” that caused the failure. I doubt I’d be convinced to try another “firmware update”.

Keep me posted on your situation, and I’ll do the same. This does not seem like an isolated incident.  I’m confident it will be sorted. My wife has the T5 Neckband model and they have been flawless, and she loves them. Obviously they can build wireless earphones.

Bought the YAMAHAA-S701 2-Ch x 100 Watts Natural Sound Integrated Amplifier I can feel myself getting STRONGERRR😬

And I just got notification for my truck delivery for tomorrow!! I put all my service calls onto wednesday to celebrate the arrival lol....

Now searching for a decent receiver.

Good choices on both. I’ve got the older version of your speakers in our family room system. They are really good all around speakers. That system for us is mostly TV and movies. But it will certainly rock the music as well. I think you’ll be pleased.

  18. Just to add information to the thread. I was tired of fighting the cable on my beats while push mowing, And wanted to go wireless. So I ordered a pair of the T5s, and received them last week. Got them charged, paired up, and the right tips installed. They fit well and sounded good, although I’m going to give the audio nod to the beats, for both volume and bass response. But they do sound good and no wires. After a day of listening,  they’ve got good battery life, no issues with pairing or connection. Controls are a little fussy, it’s a bit uncomfortable to shove them into your ear to operate them.  Once you get the hang of it, though it’s all good.

I then, unable to leave well enough alone, downloaded the Klipsch Connect App and saw there was a firmware update, one of the things it addressed was bass response. After several failed update attempts, pairings and re-pairings;  the left earphone shut down completely and was bricked.
Klipsch customer service responded quickly and said they would send a replacement. I sure I’ll have better luck with a new pair, just not sure I’ll be doing a firmware update on the next pair.

Has anyone else enjoyed the firmware update procedure? Hopefully with better results than I had.

All - I have the same situation, pair of Original Heresy's that have veneer and cabinet damage from a wet carpet.  The electronics are good and were untouched.  Too expensive to fix?  Part out?  Or if "sell them as is" what are they worth?  Thanks.

No way to evaluate the damage without a pic. But I’d guess it’s probably repairable.

The black paint on these is faded pretty bad so something will have to be done, he had almost all the chips of wood in a plastic bag for me!  So now I need to do some work there.

I've thought about the veneer route, never done anything like it but was thinking of just doing the top and sides and make my own grilles.

I'm going to open them up in the next day or so to see what I'm playing with but had planned on buying repair kits for the x-overs just to do a nice overhaul.

I’ll post a pic of the RP280Fs that I redid with oak veneer. It was my first try at veneer and they turned out pretty good. If your wife already likes the way they sound , she will really like them if they look a little nicer. A bit pricier than a repaint but they could look so nice.

  21. Nice! I’ve always wanted to hear, Cornwalls but never had the chance.Quick thinking on increasing their WAF, with a band she likes. If the scratches aren’t too bad, I’ve heard many have had good luck with Kiwi Black shoe polish. I’ve had good luck with crayons. It might be worth a try before a full repaint. Then again those could be beautiful with new veneer. I veneered brand new Walnut RP280Fs to Oak veneer to make my wife happy. They turned out really nice.  Your Cornwalls are “Decorator” models (CDB = Cornwall Decorator Black) and didn’t come with Grills. so you’ll be on your own to fabricate  them. Many will say you should renew the capacitors, as the old ones may be out of spec after 46 years. I’d say listen for a while then maybe open the backs and at least make sure the old ones aren’t leaking. I’ve recapped Heresys and had it make a big difference; I’ve done on La Scalas and I personally Couldn’t hear any difference. So YMMV.

  22. I’ve got several Miyabi knives. They are fantastic knives. Razor sharp, durable. Their knives come in different quality levels. The ones that have the Damascus blades are the best. But even their lower end knives are great. Shun are good too, most not as pricey. Sur La Tablé stores let you try them out. Warning: you’ll be ruined, for lesser knives.

Can you tell me your process for contacting support for that volume pod? I want to do the same.

I just had a look on the web site. They used to sell a replacement. I’m not seeing it listed now. It may still be available, but you’ll probably need to contact customer support. I’ve also heard of repair videos on YouTube, but haven’t checked them out. Good luck these are great computer speakers, except for this issue.  I find it surprising that they haven’t fixed it, or at least continued to make a replacement easily available.
