  1. You are probably not going to hear a difference between high-end speaker cable and generic speaker wire. I'd suggest buying what you can afford. However, I wouldn't break the bank. 14ga wire should work fine. I'm using 16ga on some runs and 10ga on others. I've played with both and can't tell the difference. However, I can't hear a dog whistle either.
  2. Stay away from Queen in DTS the live conert sucks. The mix is real bad and the performace wasn't that good either. The music sounds flat and uninspiring. It sound slike they slapeed this one together.
  3. I also bought the 47A DVD player and think it sounds wonderful. I now use the player's DACS over my preamp's DACS for everything. However, I don't think that SACD or DVD-A is that much better then DTS. I also think a really good produced CD still sounds wonderful too. However, DVD-A and SACD are less tinny and has better bass but DTS is right there. I like having the latest toys but these new formats are only a must have if you can't get software in the DTS format. DD music sounds pretty good too. I would put a little behind DTS. IMHO It's all good and lots of fun and I'm for anything that improves on older technology.
  4. Hi, I have 3 sets of Heresy speakers. The oldest being from the 70's with cast squakers. The other 2 sets are from the late 70s and 80's. I can't tell much of a difference between the three. Even if I did I wouldn't worry about them matching because in a 5 channel system each speakers has its own output and I doubt if anyone would say hey that sounds like **** because your left sorround speakers sounds different then your right front speaker. I think too much is made out of timber matching. Sensitivity matching is far more important, IMHO.
  5. It depends on the receiver and amp/preamp combination you're comparing. B&K makes a 3k receiver that is essentially a speperate amp/preamp all in one box. Most receivers make comprimises to keep the cost down and to fit everything into one small box. I use to have my upstairs Hereseys hooked up to a HK receiver and they didn't sound too good. They lacked tight bass and there was an overal flat sound to them. When I hooked these same speakers to my Sherbourn amp and Newcastle preamp and the speakers came alive and sounded wonderful. Carver, ADCOM, Rotel, B&K, Creek, Parasound a few others make inexpensive amps that sound wonderful. I buy lots of used equipment and have never had a problem. You might want to look for a used B&K av5000 amp or an older Parasounds amp. I think I would put the ADCOM at the bottom of my list with Klipsch speakers. The Newcastle preamp is excellent and has a 6 channel pass through. I recently bought a DVD player with SACD, DVD-A, DTS and DD. I now use the DVD players decoding with the Newcastle. Although, the Newcastle has some excellent Dacs too. After you get your preamp/amp make sure that you buy a subwoofer. I can't stress enough how much enjoyment a sub adds to 2 channel and multi-channel music and movies. Partsexpress sells a Titanic 12" sub kit that can be had for around 350.00. You can buy the driver for a lot less and build your own cabinet. I would however, suggest that you build a passive sub and buy an inexpensive amp to drive the sub. The sub amps that prtsexpress sells are not that good. However, most sub amps aren't. Good luck.
  6. You can also get the grill cloth from Klipsch for 20.00 a yard. I've bought the cane cloth that is an exact match to my Cornies for the 80s. Also, here is a tip. When you are done refinishing your speakers get some butchers wax and rub it into the finish and then buff it off. You will get the smotthest finish possible. If you use a black paint then I wouldn't apply the wax. The wax is for real or venered surfaces.
  7. I'd like to recommend a Sherwood Newcastle 9080R preamp. The Newcastle line is a high end line for Sherwood and nothing like some of the junk that they have produced. You can find them new or used for under 500.00. This is one nice preamp. I own two. It has 6 channel inputs for SACD/DVD-A, DTS, DD, and prologic decoding, analog pass through, great bass management, and a great back lit remote. Then I would look at ubid to pickup a parasound 85 watt amp new for about 380.00. The Newcastle amp 9080m got mixed review but that can be had for under 500.00 too. You'll have a kickass system and much better than a receiver.
  8. Perhaps you can use wire and hang them from the ceiling. I would also call Klipsch or Layne Audio and see about buying a bucking magnet for your woofer's magnet. They also sella special metal that youcan put between the speaker and your TV. That may help too. I have a Heresy on top of my audio cabinet and it doesn't bother the TV. I guess I'm lucky.
  9. I teach computers and use a 3,000 Promixa projector. They output is excellent but keep in mind that the room needs to be dark to use a projector.
  10. Boa, I totally agree. I have a massive DYI 15" sub that is tight and deep but music sounds much better when I listen to my Cornwalls then my Heresys with the sub. I'm not talking about mids and highs. The Cornies make lots of bass that intergrate better with my sub. Perhaps if I had a variable crossover for the sub things would be different. Unfortunately, my crossover is static at 80hz. Too bad because I would love the ability for variable crossover settings.
  11. My wife doesn't slam she just gives me a look that could cripple any able bodied man.
  12. Identical to Monster Cable or AR cables is the house brand from Dayton at www.partsexpress.com. A set of RCA cables run around 11.00 and they are high quality. I seriously doubt you could hear a difference. I own Monster Cables and AR and in my listening tests there wasn't any difference. You can pay a lot more for cables and it's debatable whether or not you can hear a difference.
  13. Hi, I thought the KLF-20 might sound fuller than the Heresy due to the 10" woofers and lower cut off. I'm running a sub so I guess the Heresy is the speaker I'll use. This will save me some hassles too since I already own the Heresys and was considering selling them and buying a pair of KLF-20s from a guy I know. I own 3 pair of Heresy that I've been collecting on Ebay. The last pair I bought has a cast squaker which means they are older Heresys: HWO 20p1717. Now I have to find the posts on how to read this serial number. Thanks..I respect everyones opinion here.....
  14. My thinking is that the heresys will roll off at 63hz anyway so why not run them full range? Is there less distortion by running them small? Thanks
  15. In my down stairs system I have Cornwalls for mains, a Heresy for the center channel and Heresys for the rear channels. I also have a 15" passive sub that goes to about 30hz and creates a nice rich sound to my system. The Heresy speakers cut off at 63 hz due to specification listed on the Klipsch site. I recently bought an SACD player and wanted to know if I should be setting my center and rear speakers (Heresys) to small or large. On my player or preamp I can set the speakers to small and re-direct all frequencies below 80hz to the sub. And my other alternative is to set the Hersys to full range? Is there any advantage to either one. I also have 5 monoblocks running each channel so juice is not an issue. Thanks
  16. Hi, I am setting up a new 5.1 channel system with older speakers. I mainly listen to 2 channel stereo but will also use the system for movies and probably DTS and DD music. I will be using a Heresy for the center channel and a paif of KSF-S5's for the surround sound speakers (rears). I'm not interested in timber matching so that is not a concern. My concern is if I should use Heresy's (original) for the mains or a pair of KLF-20s (both speakers are available to me. I would imagine both speakers have sound smilar. Although, I've never heard the 20s. I'm wondering if the 20s would make a better main speaker because it has 2 10" woofers and the sound may be richer then a Heresy that is driving a 12" woofer. I know there is more to this equation then just that. Crossovers, cabinet size and design all factor in. I would appreciate advice for anyone who is familiar with the KLF-20 and the Heresy and which speaker would make a better main speaker?? 17. Hi, I finally got my first SACD disc to try out in the 47A player. Here goes: I listed to both the CD version and SACD recordings of Billy Joel's stranger album. I thought that the noise floor was a little lower on the CD version. However, the dynamics and resolution on the SACD disc was much better. However, I wouldn't jump up and down about what a difference it was. The music was a littler richer and fuller. What I liked most was the multichannel imaging. However, I've listed to many DTS discs where the music was just as dynamic. I still think that how the material is recorded makes the most difference and perhaps newer releases which are setup for SACD, from the getgo, will take more advantage of this new medium. All in all the player is awesome. Bass management and gain settings are availabe via an OSD which is easy to use and makes changes in real time. I also like that the player automatically syncs to any disc you give it which is unlike my preamp where I have to guess the input. 2 channel stero sounds great in the player too and DTS and DD were also good. I couldn't see much of a difference between the DACS of my preamp and the player for stereo But DTS and DD sounded better..I could hear things I couldn't hear before with my preamp's decoding. I am happy with this player and would buy it again in a minute. I also tried out the Fleetwood Mac Rumors DVD-A and thought that it sounded incredible. I don't know of it was the higher sampling rate of a new mix but I could hear things in this release I can't hear in the CD release. This message has been edited by trader on 06-04-2002 at 09:39 PM
  18. Atom, I received my player today but was only able to test 2 channel audio using the players DACS. I thought the sound was great. Detailed and smooth. I actually heard things I didn't hear that clearly with my older player. I also listened to some DTS downmixed to 2 channel stereo and that sounded great too. When I get my SACD's and DVD-A's I'll give a full report.
  19. MikeKid, Thanks for the review and links. I didn't want to wait any longer to jump into these new audio formats. Everyday new titles are coming out which is promising. I have a Pioneer DV-414, now, which was rated high for video and ok for audio quality. The player weighs like 6 pounds or something. However, this player has served me well. I have no complaints. Some say the player is bright without detail but I would have to disagree. I found that the 414 is very revealing. When I play a CD that is mixed properly my system sounds incredible. I also have Cornwall speakers which are also revealing. Synthesized music doesn't sound as good as some other CD's. I've heard that SACD and DVD-A is suppose to sound very tube like with more dynamics. I wonder how many CD's are actually mixed to sound good on stock car audio systems and low end systems. If the new formats are really tube like I will be a very happy person. I already ordered Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel and the Eagles in each high rez format that they were available in. Now I may have to slowly replace all my cd's with these new formats. I'll be running Cornwalls for mains, and Heresys for a center and sorround sound speakers. For an amp I have the Sherbourn 5/1500, a Newcastle preamp and the Pioneer 47A as my player (soon to be). I think I'm done upgrading for a while. Oh yeah. Pioneer guarantees a 3 year upgrade for any new audio formats that should come along. This is very cool.
  20. Hi, I'm interested in purchasing a Pioneer DV-47A player. Can anyone out there give me a review on SACD, DVD-A and 2 channel cd sound from this unit. Thanks
  21. I bought my Cornwalls in the eraly eighties and auditioned them against some of the finest speakers in the world and several had won awards for sound and design. The end result was that each time the Klipsch speakers were turned on the room filled with dynamic music. I thought the sound stage and imaging was incredible. DOn't get caught up in all this. Buy what sounds best to your ears. As a side not I went to a high end sho yesterday to listen to the new Pioneer 47a and still like my Cornwalls better then the Magneplans and Meridian speakers I heard. With the new SACD and DVD audio disc Klipsch speakers should really excell do to their revealing nature and the tube sound from these new formats. Good luck
  22. I ended up buying 3 sets of Heresy speakers on Ebay. One pair was from Hawaii. I was just curious if anyone had played with the horn compression drivers that Parts express sells. Today I sold my c-5 center channel and replaced it with one of my Heresys for a center. I'm a happy man. For my main system I have Cornalls for mains, a heresy for a center and heresys for sorround speakers. I think I have a lot of bang for the buck.
  23. I always thought that the compression drivers were sealed and the cabinet has no effect on the horn sound. The size and shape of the horn is what amplifys the sound coming from the hron driver. The K-horn doesn't have a back and its horn drivers are in free air so I don't think you're correct. I want to build a similar design to the Heresy using an 8" woofer in a slightly smaller cabinet than the Heresy. I would love to know if the Layne drivers would help me accomplish this. Obviously the sales guy says YES!! The drivers run around 70.00 each.
  24. Hi, I wanted to build sorround sound speakers into my book shelf. A Heresy is too big for the enclosure. I would like to use Klipsch components but the prices are getting insame on EBAY. One (not a pair) Heresy sold for 260.00 the other day. Anyway, Layne Audio advertises replacement drivers for the Heresy and crossovers. I heard good things about the Heresy woofers but not about their horn drivers. I would love to hear from anyone who has gone that route if they were happy with the end results. Layne claims that his drivers are a close match and may even be smoother?? Thanks
  25. Hi, I'm buying speaker wire for a few long runs to hookup two sets of Heresy speakers. I'm wondering if 10ga wire is overkill? WOuld I be better off with a thinner wire? Thanks
