Can (need) I plug the ports

Only trial and error will tell :) Plug the ports with some rolled up socks and listen :)

I have a pair of L/R RC-7's in "tight" bookcases, positioned right up to the rear wall. Plugging them was a great improvement. (Yes, I know that they sound better unplugged at least 4 inches from the wall - just NOT possible.)

    dedicated two channel receiver

Haha; some of us just want to "show off." But, seriously, dedicated 2-channel receivers usually are just "better" than AVR's - especially AVR's pushing 7 channels. In my case for example, I have a decent 4.1 "TV SOUND" system using an Onkyo AVR which puts out 120 wpc. But, also have a 2-channel setup with pre-amp/amp (350wpc) and KPT-904's with a JBL HF horn section. Haha; I only play it LOUD. Absolutely "night and day" or "Yugo vs Porsche." Try it; I am sure you will like it. But be prepared to spend much more money :)

  3. Great buy! :)  (Even with $100 shipping.) Got a set of RB-75's a couple of months ago and I paid $500 incl shipping from Canada :(

Note; if you are shipping these it is recommended that the drivers be removed from the horns - at least that was the case for my RB-75's (which have heavier drivers).

  4. Well; I am with @gmarcm Had Forte I/II's and never was really pleased by them. Good sounding speakers, but they never "filled the room" with music. Tried "upgrading" them by adding K-510 horns but was never successful - the 510's "blew" away the Forte's making them sound like cheap little speakers.

Think the 8000F's would be a marginal up/downgrade. (I am NOT familiar with them.) Instead of contemplating those, I suggest you look at some Klipsch PRO speakers.

  5. Glass tops are great for some speakers. Had them on my CW's and currently on my subwoofer - which looks like a table so people put "stuff" on it :(  Haha; do not have glass on top of my KPT-904's/HF section nor on bookshelf and/or tall floor-standers :)

Don't forget to put little clear spacers underneath the glass.

is it then possible to bypass the passive crossover and biamp them with an external digital crossover without modifying them internally?

NO; the speaker terminals are connected to the internal crossover. To run it with a DSP you have to connect the DSP outputs directly to the individual  woofers/tweeters/etc.

  7. Bought a Dynaco clone about a year ago from  http://www.tubes4hifi.com/amps.htm#ST70 . The ST-70 came with excellent instructions and was very easy to build. And the owner (Bob?) was extremely helpful when I made "one" wrong connection. They also have ST-120's and some monoblocks. About $1300 for the ST-70 with some upgrades.  Highly recommend this if someone wants to try tubes. (However, sold it a couple of months later as it just did not enough power for me :( - using 220 and 350 wpc SS units now.)

  8. K510's or bigger? Had some K510 brackets but gave them to a forum member ... too long ago to remember who :(

Boxes are easily build but angling the horns is a bit of a problem.  (My horns are about 5ft high on top of KPT-904's. Never had to angle my K510's as they have a wide field of sound ... same with my "newer" and larger JBL 4722-HF horns.)
