  1. Gary, many thanks. Have fun tonight hearing your daughter sing before the game. What a neat experience for both of you. Chris
  2. THANKS! Gary, I sent you an e-mail through the forum. Hope it arrives. Please let me know if it doesn't. Chris
  3. Thanks to Allan, Tom, and Big D for making this possible. Thanks also to garymd for keeping his promise. I have been out of the country for a little over 3 weeks, and have been up for more than 26 hours straight getting home. Still, first things first, I would like to add my name and request for a pair of the pie-slice logos before I fall into bed. I hope you all have been well in my absence, and I will check in with the forum at length tomorrow. Good night all! Chris
  4. thanks garymd! I think many of us would be eager to take any pressure off of Allan and enable everyone to get what they want. I also think many of us would be willing to pay more than just postage for the opportunity. I will soon be out of the "know" for a while, so I wish us all the best of luck. Also a sincere thank you to Allan (and Tom) for volunteering to help fellow members. Chris
  5. I will be out of the country for a month and will most likely miss out on the offer of pie slice logos. If anyone out there would be kind enough to help me I would greatly appreciate it as well as help pay you or Allan for your time and effort. I need only one pair for my '73 La Scalas, so if any of you could hold a pair until my return I would be thrilled. I don't want to be any trouble nor ask Allan to bend the rules he has established. If I miss out, so be it. Thanks for any help you might offer to my situation. Chris
  6. I would also very much like a pair ('73 La Scalas), and will be happy to pay if need be. Thanks! Chris
  7. Brass wool is even better, I'm told. Any bits of steel wool "snagged" by the wood grain might eventually oxidize (rust) and stain the surrounding veneer. Just a thought. Chris
  8. 1959 Shorthorn 15's 1973 La Scalas I don't know the vintage of my McIntosh gear (SS), but they have McIntosh Clinic performance certification stickers dating as far back as 1971. I also don't know the vintage of my Khorn clones currently outfitted with K-33-P's, Altec 511B's with University SA-HF drivers, and University 4401's. My ears were conceived in 1966. P.S. My Leslie 45 "voice of the pipe organ" speaker is from 1961, and provides some funny/trippy effects when I am in the mood. Chris
  9. Did you also see the raised panel La Scalas with the platform shoes? Original? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3014232565&category=14993
  10. I am using University midrange drivers with Altec 511B horns in my Khorn project. The driver terminals are labeled L1 and L2, rather than + and -. Can someone tell me how to wire them properly? All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance, Chris
  11. There are at least 3 kinds of AA networks that I am aware of, and probably more. My '73 La Scalas have 5 oil caps, 2 piggy backs and a single. They are square, flat, and labeled "John E. Fast". They sound great, but the oil cap AA's pictured within this post sound better IMHO. Chris
  12. P.S. What "order" networks would these be? I also have another pair ('58/'59) without the 3 green pegs and the capacitor(?) between the copper spools. Would that be a first order network? Thanks again for any information. Chris
  13. I have a pair of older K-1000-5000 networks. Check the attachment if you will. Can I modify these networks to be K-500-5000's? Was the K-1000-5000 used in models other than the Shorthorn? Any help or references would be appreciated. Chris
  14. JR, I have '59 Shorthorn 15's with K-1000-5000 networks. The K-77's are 16 Ohm and the SA-HF's are 16 Ohms, but the Stephens Trusonic 103LX woofers are also 16 Ohm with a DCR of 10. The faceplates on these networks are stamped 16 Ohm as well. You might have to alter the tap setting on mine to use a K-33-E woofer, but you probably wouldn't with Capt'n Bob's. The tap settings on mine are: 4,2, and 0. Hope this helps. Chris
  15. Al, The only differences in the woofer inductors are in the stamping. Ink stamped for the '73, and stamped into the metal on the '79's. The capacitors are the same between the '79 pair, but the capacitors on the two from '73 are different from one board to the other. The '73 networks are from consecutive La Scalas and appear to be original. This difference may be partly to blame, however. All networks are connected to terminal 4. Chris
  16. Al, Forgive my ignorance. Each AA has a similiar configuration. There are three metal containers, a spool, and two items that look like rolls of tape held by square collars. The metal containers are different between the vintages, while the other parts are verysimiliar. One of the rolls is on a vertical axis, the other is horizontal. One has 6 taps coming out with wires attached at 6,5,&4. Is the other roll the inductor? If so, the square collars are stamped with #: 2133 on both vintages. Chris
  17. I have some project speakers I've been working on. The AA networks were borrowed from '73 La Scalas until I recently purchased another pair of AA's. The seller said these were from '79 Khorns. I'm hearing a lot more deep clean bass than I do with the '73 networks, and I'm wondering what the differences between the networks would be. My project speakers are: Speakerlab clone Klipschorn bass bin with '73 K-33-P woofers, Altec 511B horns with University SA-HF drivers, and University 4401 tweeters. Currently I am using the '79 networks and really like the sound better than before. I think the woofers went to K-33-E before '79, and I assume the network was tweaked at the same time. Am I in danger of damaging the '73 woofers with a later network, both AA's? If so, I would rather put them back into my '73 La Scalas, completing them again, and order some new K-33-E's for my project. Any advice would be appreciated. The Speakerlab bass bins came with a driver that looked identical to the P, had the same DCR, and sounded great. What other tests can I perform to see if it is a close match for the K-33-P, K-33-E, or neither? Thanks for any help. Chris
  18. Thanks! I feel better already. Sincerely, Chris
  19. Yesterday, I received a pair of AA networks in the mail. I hooked them up incorrectly, and wonder if I might/could have damaged anything. I had the incoming speaker wire hooked up to the woofer terminal, and the woofer wire hooked up to input terminal. I played music at low levels (90 Db), and recognized a problem quickly. Still, I switched between the A and B speakers for a short while. I checked the tightness of the terminal screws, and performed the above listening comparisons again. I found the mistake, corrected it and listened, and I could almost convince myself that I now have a slight problem with my amp. It seems I am getting more bass from the left side, and more treble on the right side. Is this possible? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris
  20. Tom, What is a re-entrant horn? Thanks, Chris
  21. Mike, Glad to hear you enjoyed playing around with different horn/driver combos. Sorry to hear about your neck and upcoming surgery. Good luck with that, and get better fast. Sincerely, Chris
  22. Thank you for your insight and suggestions. I guess I'm glad to know it wasn't the fillings in my teeth! Would shielded speaker cables eliminate this problem? Thanks again. Chris
  23. I was hearing only one end of the conversation.
  24. Last night, while between CD's, I heard the strangest thing. CB radio, albeit softly, was playing through my speakers! The receiver was switched to CD mode, and I can only vouch for the "B" speakers ('59 shorthorns), but I heard it. I assume this is a problem with the receiver, but any help or suggestions would be appreciated. If it matters, the equipment is Sony from the last decade: CDP-CA9 ES disc player STR-D1015 receiver I have not yet been able to hear the CB radio again since, but I haven't spent a lot of time trying either. Thanks, Chris
