Welcome to the Klipsch forums, and welcome to the Epic Owner's Club!  Here is everything you want to know in one place:

    https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/159405-klipsch-epic-owners-group/&/topic/159405-klipsch-epic-owners-group/?hl=%2Bepic%2B%2Bowners

You are now the proud owner at a good price of the CF-3's version 1.  That also means Year 1 since they were only made for three years commonly known as versions 1,2,3.  Version one's are the Holy Grail of the Epic series well known for their clear sound and excellent articulation.  FYI you have Light Oak which is not all that common.

You mentioned you heard a "crackling."  Could that be a slight "buzz" and it only happens at a particular frequency?  If so you could have a loose dust cap.  Get back to me if you think that is the problem and I can help you fix it quick and easy.

    Dave,

That was the OP in this thread that said the below, not I:

Please understand that I know very little at this point about the audio technical world,

but I am willing to learn.  So, please use layman's terms if you are able to provide any advice or feedback.

I am new to Klipsch and new to this forum.  I grew up in the 80s outside of Hope, AR (in Texarkana) and always new of Klipsch as the pinnacle of speaker quality, although I could never afford them.  Well, I found a pair of CF3 v.1s on my local shopgoodwill.com and go them for $350!  They are in great shape.  I'm looking forward to hooking them up and taking them for a test drive.  However, I have a Harmon Kardon AVR520 tuner that I mainly used as garage listening with some old Sony SS-U7030s that I kept from my college days.  Will this HK do the trick for a non-audiophile or should I look to upgrade the receiver?  Can I just add an amp to boost the output?  Please understand that I know very little at this point about the audio technical world, but I am willing to learn.  So, please use layman's terms if you are able to provide any advice or feedback.

yuck is about right for oak

    mahogany - yummy

This is funny to me.  My parents owned an antique shop back in the '80's and '90's, and oak was all anyone wanted.  Mahogany went cheap, if it went at all.  These things go in cycles, and it's interesting to watch it swing back and forth.

ITEM DESCRIPTION:  Up for auction is a HUGE and RARE pair of vintage 1950's Klipsch Klipschorn working stereo speakers, with walnut veneer cabinets. Estate Fresh. The owner of these speakers was a lifelong "tinkerer" and audio enthusiast. These speakers were stored in a dedicated listening room for all their life. They have very early serial numbers of 1156 and 1337. Each speaker measures approximately 52" tall, 32" wide, 13" along parallel sides of pentagonal tops, and 29" from the apex of the back corner to the middle front. There are some blemishes/scratches to the wood veneer in a few places. See the last photo for a close-up of the worst damage. The description of each speaker follows:

    • Klipschorn Corner Horn Speaker - Serial No. 1156: Dated Nov. 30, 1956. Loaded with aluminum squawker horn with a K55 Mid, a K77 Tweeter, a K500-5000 crossover, and a Stephens Tru-sonic 103LX2 Woofer. Works well.
    • Klipschorn Mid Range Horn Speaker - Serial No. 1337: Dated May 14, 1957. Loaded with a K5 squawker with a University SAHF Mid, a University 4401 Tweeter, and a type 1RC crossover variant. The cabinet type is not clear on this speaker, and may be a kit or DIY. The woofer on this speaker will need to be replaced or re-coned. It looks to be a later model woofer, and the surround has been damaged. See 11th photo for close-up. Works.
    • NOTE: There is also an extra roll of material for the speaker covers.

PAYMENT:  I will accept Paypal for these speakers, but would prefer cash payment upon pick-up.

SHIPPING:  NO SHIPPING. Local pick-up ONLY in Havre de Grace, Maryland.

RETURNS: Refunds will be given if an item is not as described and is returned in the same condition as it was shipped. My Stores Logo

Jeez ... they look small now :D Of course not everyone uses a 60 inch (?) monitor :)

That's true about the monitor size.  I work from home and have 8 different companies as clients, so I have a *lot* of windows open at one time.  This set of speakers will be working 10 - 12 hours a day except for meetings.  imoksmiley.gif

They are right at 1 meter from my head when setting at my desk, and the Super Heresy© are at the same distance behind me.  Fantastic sound stage and SPL.

@ClaudeJ1 does some amazing work!  I hope to be able to pick up some Cornwalls for his next upgrade project.  I wonder if I could sneak them in as the master bedroom speakers?  I have a pair of KG4's in there right now, so if I can find some Cornwalls in oak...  I will tell the misses that the KG's had a growth spurt.

OK next up are these John Allen MWM clones. That's right no pictures take my word for it these are in good shape and the price is onerous. Like the single MWM's except these are FREE and yes I have removed the woofers for use in the Super MWM's I will be building. Use them for a dog house or your seating bench or even put woofers in them and enjoy them. They are prodigious DB producers of fine clean bass and if YOU do not save them they will be firewood.

So lets see what is for free. The Labspeaker stuff and the MWM clones and you have a couple of days to decide before the wrecking crew gets here. Actually on the Labspeaker stuff in a couple of days I will trash the cabinet and list the components on EBay. Maybe I will do this buy the end of today who knows but I am serious as those who expressed horror over the chop chop of nice KP-262's and KSM 2's can attest too.  Gotta be QUICK or forever hold your peace on these. The more I think about it the Labspeaker stuff will not be available after this evening for free and the cabinet will be on it's way to speaker Heaven.

Damn, I wish you were just a bit closer.  As my wife says, "Soon we will have to walk across the speaker tops to get anywhere in the house".

No you are good. Sounds like my act. Murphy's Law. The Vibe is a hidden gem. Very few come up for sale. Good roadmachine and speaker hauler.

Glad you met Emile. Sounds like nice setup. Hope you saw his console project.

    Enjoy!

    Love the HeinlB)ein quote...

That '50's console will be amazing when it is completed.  It appears to be teak?   It makes me laugh thinking about modern sound coming out of that mid-century box.

  9. I've got to tell a story on myself.  In the light of a new day, it's rather funny.

On both Thursday and Friday, I was operating on almost zero sleep.  Two, maybe three hours a night tops.  Between work and insomnia, I was a total wreck.

Meanwhile, I had been negotiating with Emile over his KP-3002.  We arrange for me to take a trip down to St. Pete, so I take off from work early yesterday to go pick up these (Awesome!) speakers.

I was extremely tired, and mentally whacked out.  As we are carrying them out to my car, I burst into a heavy sweat that was not merely caused by the Florida heat.  My glasses fog up immediately so I take them off and lay them down in the back of the Pontiac Vibe (It's a re-badged Toyota Matrix without the resale value).  I then start the process of putting down the back seats and flipping the carpet forward so that I could load the "rat fur" covered 3002's into the back.  I get them loaded, and we go back into the house where Emile has graciously provided some bottled water, and he wanted to demo his KPT-904's for me.  He has a fantastic setup, a literal wall of sound.  He built some matching cabinets to hide the 904 horns to avoid wife aggro, along with 3 matching Heresy's.

It's at this point that I realize I didn't have my glasses.  I thought that I had taken them off inside, so I looked around at all the spots that I had been near.  No dice.  He then said that I probably took them off at the car, so I went out and they weren't there.  I dug around in the back, making sure they weren't behind or maybe in between the speakers.  Nope.

We went back in the house and had another unsuccessful rummage around.

    Twice.

Back out to the car for the third time, and after a thorough search I found them underneath the front drivers seat.  When I flipped the carpet forward, the glasses must have flown to the front of the car, bounced off the dashboard, and ended up under the front of the seat.  Jeez.  Could I BE any more moronic?  I go back inside to let him know that I found them.  He was smiling by this point, so I thought I would back out gracefully, trying to recoup as much of my dignity as I could.  He closed the door, and I make it halfway back to my vehicle.

That's when I realized that I had left my medic's mini backpack with all my portable kit inside his house.  "Once more into the fray".  Good lord.

@Emile, you must think I am barely above a baboon in the evolutionary scale.  Serves me right.

Thank you again for the incredible deal on these, E!  Klipsch Pro, the best kept secret in speakers.

Here they are in a temporary spot for some testing:

Those woofers represent the best of the K33's ever made,  IMHO...................they are K33P's which were made by CTS of Paducah (I zoomed in after Photoshop Interpolation to verify), also I remember the stamped frames are different from any by Eminence, the current manufacturer. I had a pair in my FH-1 bass horns, and in my basement office, those suckers went down to 30 Hz. so I can only imagine what they do in a Cornwall. I should have kept those.  Also, the square magnet K77's suggest they were upgraded in the late 70's or early 80's, even though the cabinet is from the 60's. Just saying. Xovers need new capacitors, but those are cheap to do. They may be worth it for those who care about such details.

Are these decorator cabs, then?  The Ebay ad says they are from 1974.  Maybe there is some decent woodgrain hiding under the black...

I’ll start the forensic process then. It just seems odd that this quality of a speaker would sound so poorly but, then again, they were at a thrift shop. No red flag here...lol. I have a set of vintage ESS speakers with the Heil AMT tweeter and a passive 12” radiator much like these and the bass is just shy of thunderous to say the least. Hopefully the dissection will reveal something. I had a friend many years ago who had a Marantz 4400 with a pair of Klipschorns for the front speakers and I remember how it sounded. One of the best I had ever encountered. The presence and sound stage was awe inspiring. I have a 4400 myself but it is waiting for the to finish the recap process. I had it hooked up to four big CV’s and through the sq2b decoder playing some vintage R to R and it would knock pictures off of the wall! My wife put the kibosh on that stunt real quick 😡

Someday maybe I’ll have some “Chorns” too

One thing that I did to help with the bass out of KG4's, was to create a sort of "horn loaded" shape utilizing other pieces of furniture arranged around the speakers.

What I mean by this, is to create a U shaped space to place these in, by creatively arranging furniture around them that I could put against the walls.  I found that the speakers liked to be 6 - 8 inches off the wall.  I then created the same spacing on both the left and the right with a highboy chest in the center with a bookshelf completing the U on one side, and a decorative chest on the other side (which holds the electronics).  This really boosted the bass in my room, by accentuating the output of the passive radiators in the back of the speakers.  There is all the thump you would need available from the KG4's.  It just takes a little bit of experimentation to wring all you can  out of them.

Another Mopar fan here as well...

  12. There is a technique that I have used in the past successfully.  You can raise existing wood grain utilizing water and an iron:

    https://homeguides.sfgate.com/repair-wood-grain-rise-steam-99306.html

Then you can use a dark walnut stain (sparingly!) using a soft cloth, and laid down along the grain, in your case front to back.  Give it a little stain, then almost immediately wipe the same area with a clean, lint free cloth.  The microfibers work well for this.  You can get these scratches to nearly invisible at a foot away.  You can blend this way several times if needed.

Next:  Buy some tinted safety glass cut to the size of the tops.  Never take them off.
