  1. If you're handy with a soldering iron, go to your local electronics store or even something like Home Depot and pick up some RG-59 coax cable. It's 75 ohms and I believe that is what is used for component video as well as digital interconnects. Get some decent quality RCAs from your electronics store and solder them on the ends... that'll save you a ton of money. ------------------ - 1980 Cornwalls - Consonance Ella w/EL34s - Bottlehead Foreplay w/all upgrades - Philips CD360 into a SoundStream DAC-1 - Sansui TU-9500 Tuner
  2. As my signature indicates below, Consonance Ella w/EL34s on my Cornwalls. Before that, the Cornwalls were powered by a Parasound HCA-750A which was very clean and sounded very good. But there is nothing really like the sweet sound of tubes.... ------------------ - 1980 Cornwalls - Consonance Ella w/EL34s - Bottlehead Foreplay w/all upgrades - Philips CD360 into a SoundStream DAC-1 - Sansui TU-9500 Tuner
  3. While it would be nice to get other heritage speakers as surrounds and center, they're fairly hard to come by here in the Vancouver/Victoria area. I suppose I've seen a few for sale in Seattle and that's only a few hours away but still a hassle. And the cost of shipping cross border something that big is pretty much prohibitive. Boa, having a Cornwall as a center would be kickass but the only way I could think of using it as a TV stand would be to lay it sideways... I wonder what that would do to the sound. Anyone here have any experience with the factory direct Axiom speakers at http://www.axiomaudio.com or Omega full range speakers at http://omegaloudspeakers.com. Both seem to offer decent products at very good prices. Thanks! 4. Hey all, Funny that I should find this thread since I was just thinking about finding a center channel for my Corns. However, since it is harder to get matching Heritage speakers as a center, I'd like to know what success people have had running other non-Klipsch centers with their Cornwalls? If anyone has done a DIY center I'd also be interested to hear about that. Thanks! 5. I bought a pair of 1980 Walnut Cornwalls last year for CDN$350. The cabinets needed some refinishing and repair and one of the previous owners replaced the K-33Es with JBL 130As but they're still a steal! I almost got a pair of LaScalas for CDN$500 last month but the owner backed out a few hours before I was supposed to pay him and pick them up. He talked to a friend in the pro audio biz the night before who told him he shouldn't sell them for less than $2000. Granted $500 was low but in the condition they were in, they weren't worth more than $1000. I'm not sure how much Sansui tuners go for but I picked up a Sansui TU-9500 for CDN$70 and it's in great shape and also sounds excellent! 6. Hey again Mike, I was just over at the Bottlehead forum on AA and was looking up some info on 12AU7/5814/5963/6189 and came up with some other places to buy the JAN Philips 5814A. http://www.pacifictv.ca - $6.80 http://www.thetubestore.com - $8.95 http://www.partsexpress.com - $5.80 or less if bought in larger quantities Hope this helps! 7. Hey Mike, Funny you should post about JAN Philips 5814As since I just picked up 2 about an hour ago. I bought them from a place locally in town here in Victoria called Pacific TV. They have a website at: http://www.pacifictv.ca/ I was able to just pop over and pick them up but they ship anywhere as well. Their prices are good and they are very easy to deal with. If you email them or call them today they could probably get them to you this week if you get them to ship by courier. BTW they charge US$6.80 a piece for the 5814s. I also picked up some Sylvania 5963s for $4.60 a piece. I hope you get the music going soon! I am waiting for a replacement EL34 to be sent to me for one that ignited so I feel your pain! 8. Wow! Some guy is selling a single 1957 Hartsfield. What a fine looking speaker... wouldn't that make the ultimate mono system in a corner! In the description of the speaker they even use the quote "of all of the Klipsch derived family, one speaker, in my estimation, is noticeably superior - the Lansing Hartsfield." Just shows what groundbreaking work PWK did for the audio industry. 9. Hi TheEAR, Thanks for your input. I will definitely go take a look/listen at the PW-2200 when I get the time soon. Of course I see you mention in some of the other threads several other subs that you prefer. How does the PW-2200 stack up against everything else you have, or is really just the winner in this price point with our Canadian peso? I noticed you also have some Sunfire subs. I am curious about them too, but I noticed on the Sunfire website that they have no Canadian dealers. Where did you get them from? I guess the main question is still, how well would these integrate with the Cornwalls? Thanks, Kevin ------------------ - Cornwalls - Parasound HCA-750A (soon Consonance Ella w/EL34s) - Bottlehead Foreplay w/all upgrades - Philips CD360 into a SoundStream DAC-1
  10. Hi Boa12, There are, two Klipsch dealers that I can think of in my area. One of them is a big chain drugstore in Western Canada called London Drugs that sells everything plus electronics. The other place is called Atlas TV and Stereo and they are a smaller store. I doubt that London Drugs would do that for a customer since they're not really getting anything out of it. I am not sure about Atlas Stereo but they don't seem to be type of guys to just do you a favour unless they're making some big cash off of you. So it really doesn't look like I can go with that option. There are more stores in Vancouver but once again, not really the type that will just do a favour for you without benefitting for themselves. And yeah, the K-33Es do cost more if they sell direct to a customer. If you were a dealer I'm sure they'd knock the price even lower. From what I've read here on the board over that last year, the K-33Es have been going for US$100 a piece if bought direct from Klipsch as a consumer. I confirmed this when I called them up last month. 11. Hi TBrennan, I've been considering doing that for awhile. I was looking into how much the parts cost new from Klipsch and from the Canadian distributor it's $500CDN plus shipping for a pair of K-33Es. If I ordered them direct from Hope it would be $200US pair + $56US shipping which is cheaper. That is if they don't mad tax me at the border and add duty (but I think there is no duty). I would have had a chance to try it out for cheap if my deal for the LaScalas did not fall through yesterday. The guy was going to sell me the set of LaScalas for $500CDN. The drivers and everything were all in good shape but the cabinets needed some work. If you've read the LaScala Cabinets thread in Updating Older Speakers you would've seen me mention that one of the previous owners has slathered on thick layers of ugly, bad white paint, and spray painted the bass bins black. Plus they are dinged up so needed some work. So the guy selling it to me was in pro sound and then he talked to one of his buddies in the business and the other guy told him to keep them and not sell them for less than $2000CDN. So he called me and said he'd keep them. They are worth more than $500 but much less than $2000. ARGH! 12. Sorry, in that last sentence about NAFTA it's supposed to say "since the subwoofer falls under the somewhat general realm of consumer goods manufactured in a NAFTA country". Curious to know TheEAR, what subwoofers do you own/have your heard? Is there anyone who has heard the Adire Audio Rava? Kevin ------------------ - Cornwalls - Parasound HCA-750A (soon Consonance Ella w/EL34s) - Bottlehead Foreplay w/all upgrades - Philips CD360 into a SoundStream DAC-1
  13. Thanks for the input TheEAR... so a PW-2200 will cost about how much CDN? It's somewhere around $800 plus PST/GST right? I was taking a look at the SVS website and saw that they are having a summer sale so if you get the largest SVSPCi model, 16-46, it's only $599 US plus about $55 US shipping which is about $1000 CDN so that didn't seem like too bad of a deal. And I thought due to NAFTA there is no duty charged on these items since the somewhat general consumer goods realm manufactured in the US. But I think I will take a look at the PW-2200 this weekend at the two stores in town who carry Paradigm. 14. Hi everyone! Since my deal for a pair of LaScalas fell through I am definitely in the mood to add something else to my system. I have been mulling about adding a subwoofer for a little while for the low end of music and some added slam for movies! My main speakers are a pair of 1980 Cornwalls, except that the last owner replaced the K-33Es with JBL 130As. Luckily the JBL works fairly well with the rest of the Klipsch drivers and I can't hear any inconsistencies. The bass as is quite good but I'd like to be able to get a little lower and of course add some LF for movies. I hear lots of recommendations here on this board about the Paradigm PW-2200 and am considering that since I can get it at a decent price here in Canada. I was also curious to know if people have any opinions about the Adire Audio Rava sub, and also how the SVS and HSU subs stack up against the Paradigm. Any info appreciated, thanks guys! 15. 1. Currently own: 1980 Cornwalls, ??? LaScalas (tomorrow) 2. 21 or 22 3. 23 4. I never thought much about the other Klipsch speakers, I didn't know much about Klipsch other than the ProMedia series. I can't remember where I started reading about Cornwalls, but a pair came up for $350 CDN and I couldn't pass it up, BTW the LaScalas I'm picking up tomorrow are $500 CDN so that's two pairs of Heritage speakers for $850 CDN! 5. I've never heard the Klischorn so I'd like to hear them and maybe get a pair, when I move into some place bigger of course. I am curious about the horn loaded bass since my first taste of that was from the LaScalas I will pick up tomorrow. The bass just felt real with the LaScalas and this was in a poor setup with crappy amplification in this guys narrow basement! 6. The Jubilee is Heritage through and through! PS - HDBR I think you built one of my two Cornwalls it says "BBF" in the corner of one and something else I can't remember now on the other. ------------------ - Cornwalls - Parasound HCA-750A (soon Consonance Ella w/EL34s) - Bottlehead Foreplay w/all upgrades - Philips CD360 into a SoundStream DAC-1
