  1. Excellent clu, Good help is definately hard to find. Sounds like that guy is taking care business. Congratulations are in order. Drinks are on you. Hurrah. I must now continue my search for the elusive Croco-stimpy. May your drivers not break while breaking in and may your cables' not go afray. he he he. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  2. Thanks guys, I can't seem to find anywhere around here to buy those little dessicant packs. Well, school is coming up and the kids are needing shoes. Although, I don't think a few of them is gonna be enough. Maybe, I can scam some extra packets from the shoestore. I can see it now. Getting busted for stealing dessicant packs from shoe boxes. LOL. "But your honor, it was in the name of audio."
  3. Hello all, I have to put a couple pairs of floorstanders into storage for a while. I don't have original boxes and the storage unit is not climate controlled. I'm concerned about damage from moisture. What can I do? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, John. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  4. Hey clu, The same thing happened to me. I was trying to get a passive radiator for one of my Quartets. No luck. They weren't available anymore. I wonder why? I wouldn't mind finding out where to get a suitable replacement. So, who out there has the low down on this? BTW. I used to fix cone rips with fingernail polish. It usually worked pretty good. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  5. Hello again, Yes, you sure can split that pre-out. That will work fine. Probably sound really good. IMO. you would greatly increase your soundstage from the rear. I personally like the really enveloping feeling I get from dual surround back. Sound comes from everywhere. I suggest try it. If you don't like it you can still use one RS3 for single surround back and keep the other for a spare speaker or bookend. ha ha. Either way I would go with the RS3 for surround back, as opposed to a RC3. Enjoy your decision. Let me know what you do. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  6. Hi OP, Relax. All is well. Be cool. Now, the fact is, You can definately do some damage to them with that amp. There's an old rule that states " Don't turn the volume much further than the 12 o'clock position". The reasoning behind this is that most receivers put out their maximum clean sound output around that position. Once the receiver is push beyond that clean limit it starts to clip (draws power from other areas of the reciever). Generally, woofers draw alot of juice from the amp. When the amp has to scavenge for power, other areas suffer. Most of the time, tweeters suffer the worst. The power losses in the amp are heard as distortion. That distortion is clipping. Clipping kills. Trust me. Just keep it around 12 o'clock or less and you should never have a problem. Some amps can sound like they handle sound well at high levels, but listen to the wrong format where your supply can't meet your demand, and "poof" bye bye tweets or mids. Be careful. I used to turn my Denon 3801 up to -10. thats about three quarters up. Sounded great for about 10 months. Then, with little warning, Poof- bye bye mid drivers. (whoops) So i've bought a separate amp for my mains. Now, I can crank it without the poof syndrome. Do you feel better now? ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  7. I'm with Jim, totally. Sound over looks anytime. Sell the RFs. You'll thank yourself later. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy my 7s, but LaScalas are just bitchin' by comparison. LOL. Especially, after a good 10 years, or so, of break in. LOLx2.... just kidding..mostly.. Besides, you'll probably have an easier time picking up some cheap used RF7s, later on, than you would some LaScalas'. IMO ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  8. Hello there, I prefer using 2 surround back speakers as opposed to 1 rear center. I feel that a better surround effect is acheived when you use 2 surround back channels. It really is a matter of taste at this point in the ever-evolving world of Home theater. Until they come out with 7.1 format, having 2 surround backs speakers is really kind of a waste. I'm trying to be prepared. I bought a full 7.2 RF7 series, with the hope I wont have to upgrade for a few years. Of course, it's only speculation, but assuming they continue producing new formats at the rate they have been, 7.1 isn't too far off. Like I said , it's really a matter of taste. I would try both, if you can, to see what would best suit your listening needs. Good luck with your decision. Have fun with it. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  9. Hi there, These guys are right. Dust cap damage does not affect speaker performance, however... I have used tape to pull cones back into shape. Take some duct tape, wrap some around your fingers backwards (so the sticky side faces out) and gently touch the cap, then pull gently Be extremely careful, as it is possible to take some cone material off or even rip a cone, with this process. I have used this method on many occasion. It is important not to fully stick the tape to the cone. Just touch it slightly until the tape adhesive grips the cone. This is not a recommended repair technique. But, it can be effective. Use extreme caution! Good luck. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  10. Hi there, The reason many people refer to horns as being bright is because a horn is designed to channel more of the sound towards the listener. In a non horn loaded driver, soundwaves leave the cone and spread out in all directions causing losses of acoustical energy. In a high frequency horn, that same lost energy is captured in the horn throat and focused. It then is "sprayed" towards you in a calculated pattern. It's called the dispersion rate. The focused sound then reaches your ears with more definition and clarity. A great deal more sonic information is reaching you before it has absorbed into the environment and dissipated into space. This cuases the "brightness". So what you hear as bright, is really what's considered "more accurate". The truth is "once you go horns, you'll never go back." It does take a few to get used to them, but after that, anything not horn loaded sounds kinda flat. IMO.
  11. But i'm having difficulty with triple posting. I went through hello to edit these three posts. I posted once, it didn't show it registered. I did it again, same thing. Did it a third time. nothing. So i went about my business elsewhere. When i popped back in to see what's shakin, I noticed my post was here 3 times. Uggg. So here we go. An answer to your question. 13. Thanks, Mr.Brennan. I didn't know there was many types. I've been focused on compound flare rates. Part of my ongoing horn research. I've been working my way inward, from horn design to horn mechanics, so your info on phase plugs is very helpful. Couple more questions, if you don't mind. Does the plug design relate to throat size or diaphram diameter? Or both? Is turbulence at the throat allowed for in plug design? Do lens minimize turbulence or just help dispersion rates? Also, on the small button type plugs, do they have a predetermined resonating freq? Is that what you mean by "break up modes"? I appreciate the info. My kids think i'm taking this too seriously. I'm finding it fascinating. And all the while, I've got some type of klipsch speaker emminating enveloping sounds. You gotta love it. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  14. Major drag. I hope everything works out for you. U.P.S. has some serious material handling issues. Be firm and insistant about your claim. With them, it's "the sqeaky wheel get the grease" kind of thing. Although with Wes on your side, you should be just fine.
  15. Hurray, All is well with the universe. I got my replacemant drivers back from Hope. Happy Happy Joy Joy Started getting a little bummed, staring at them and not being able to hear them. I had out my best speakers, trying to find a suitable substitute. No luck. But now, I can put all 10 pairs of "other" speakers away. I've tried all I have and nothing comes close to the way my RF7s speak to me. Nothing. Man, it's soooooooooo good to have them back on line. I feel like a new man. A very happy new man. Drinks are on me. Cheers! ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  16. I thought the phase plug was behind the protective screen or dome. I have wondered the same thing about some of the speakers I have. They have this plastic cross on the outside of the screen. I figured it to be a guard, like the ones they put on JBL bass ports. John, how does the phase plug minimize phase cancellation? Does it somehow alter the length of the waves coming from different areas of the diaphram? I've been curious how it works. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  17. Hi Gil, How's it going? Intresting post. Very informative. My beliefs on this issue tend to swing like a pendulum. There always seems to be an arguement to the contrary. I try to remain open minded. Since, i've been reading conflicting views and research on this topic, I'm still inclined to "break in" my loudspeakers. It certainly can't hurt any. Can it? I was wondering what your opinion on cable "burn in." I realize that those less informed will responed with vigor, but I would like to know your take on the concept. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  18. Hi, The 3802 will do the job quite adequately. However,if you don't mind spending the extra cash, then by all means go for the 4802. You RF7s would really benefit from the extra available power the 4802 offers. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  19. Man, tough crowd. "Being positive is being wrong at the top of your voice." I like that saying. Another good one is "One mans' trash is another mans' treasure." I would like proof that suspensions don't change in elastisity or that cable induction/resistance isn't altered within the first 50hrs of operation? Hey, did I mention anything about molecular realignment inside speaker cable? This message has been edited by Audioreality on 08-11-2002 at 12:56 PM
  20. Doug is absolutely right. The bare bones of it is, As long as you don't play them so loud that the sounded becomes distorted or grainy you'll be fine with any amp, big or small. Bigger is always better when you talk about amps and available wattage. IMO you can never have a big enough amp. A 70 watt amp to a 50 watt speaker is just fine Good luck on your purchase. May the audio bug bite you gently. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  21. Hi there. Congrats on your purchase. Your gonna love it. Lynnm is right about driver breakin. There is no solid evidence that it has any benefit to overall loudspeaker performance. However, the wiring inside the speaker will have a burn in time. As with all cables/wires, a small amount of time is needed to allow the jacketing of a wire/cable to "charge". The standard time it takes for this is roughly 30 to 50 hours of operation. After that time, the midbands will appear to have a richer sound and the lower bands will appear to have more definition. Aside from cable burn in, the concept of letting your speakers ease into use, would seem to be a good idea. As lynnm pointed out, a driver will move hundreds of thousands of time in just a short period. That is quite true. But, a few hours of movement fails in comparison to the thousands of hours it's expected to perform. Personally, I do it because, A. I ease every machine I own into use. B. It makes me feel confident that i'm treating my equipment right. C. It is one of those small, petty rituals performed to assure myself of the dedication I have to this passion/hobby. D. If there is a remote possibility that i can get either better sound or longer speaker life from simply letting them play moderately for a couple days, then i'm all for it brother. The ideologies of yesterday are not completely in focus with some of the newer concepts of today. With the understanding of new technology and recording formats, has to come new and innovative ways of thinking. There are many who believed ideas that were later proved wrong. There have only been a few who refused to settle for "the norm" I believe they call those people pioneers, inventors, scientists and the like. PWK was a intelligent pioneer of his time. I do believe he was open minded. It's a brave new world and it's accelerating fast. Never allow your mind to be closed to any possibility. BTW. enjoy your system. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  22. I love pussys. They're so furry and cute. No doubt, they can be a handful. Especially, when they resort to eating speaker cable. Time for kitty muzzels. Both my cats like to perch on top of my RF7s. It sometimes really bothers me. So far, they've been good. They look kinda cool up there, sorta like my personal gargoyles. Sometime, I'll post a few pages of my new book "bi-wiring your household pets" It's a complete audiolovers pet handbook. Very hip and informative. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  23. Thanks. I'm trying to look at it as a learning experience. I got to explore an old amp and see what it's made of. That was interesting. I thanked the guy for letting me audition it. He felt pretty bad about it. He's getting up there in age and doesn't remember as well as he used to. I understand. It happens. At the very least, it got my blood pumping for a few. That makes it worth it to me. ------------------ You should of heard just what I've seen.
  24. F***ing S***. This sucks. The older gentleman, I got this amp from, just came over ths morning. He said " I was trying to figure out where I got that thing from when it occured to me that my boy had brought it over 2 weeks ago" he continued "He wanted a safe place to store it until this winter when he could fool around with it." Then he said " you can keep it until he comes calling for it. If you want." Well, no thanks. what a bummer. That just ruined my day. I apologize for this useless thread. I shouldn't count my chicken before they hatch I guess that's the way it goes, First your money then your clothes. sigh.
