The Chorus, Cornwalls, and Fortes were once known as Heritage Series speakers also; but, are currently not listed when you click on the Heritage Series link through products on the main webpage. Apparently the only ones that get that classification right now are the ones still in production. That doesn't take away from them being old school Heritage Series though.
  2. edster, Thanks again for that other PM. I was always wondering how people put that wording in to their links in place of the actual link itself. Learning something new each day is a great thing. By the way...how do you like those ALK crossovers? I've been considering ordering a pair for my Khorns recently. What networks did you have originally? AA's? Ryan
  3. Jim, I'm so glad you asked that because I almost started a thread about it the other day. I was trying to figure out why all the AA networks I see pictures of here, and on eBay, all have the big metal containers on them. I thought I had been ripped off. Yes I do have them. Do you know if they are inferior in any way to the other AA networks? Will the modifications I read about everyone performing to their AA networks have any effect on ours? I read about cutting the diodes, or some business like that, but like I said every pic I see is of the other AA's. I have no idea what to cut on ours and don't even know if I would do it if I knew. I really like the way the sound now but am always open to suggestions.
  4. Moon, So you don't have ANY tube equipment at all? No wonder they aren't performing to the level that you were expecting. In my opinion Heritage Klipsch absolutely need tubes to reach their full potential. This is probably the biggest reason why you are hearing no low end from them. When I first picked up my Khorns, about a year and half ago, I was driving them with a piece of crap solid state Yamaha receiver Model# HTR-5240. LOL. What a joke. The funny thing is that before I had the Khorns I was using these cheesy Yamaha bookshelf speakers that I thought actually sounded good with that receiver...and at the time they did. After demoing the speakers, which the gentleman at the time was driving with a McIntosh C20 preamp and MC240 power amp, I took them home, hooked them up to the Yamaha and about puked. The sound was NOTHING compared to what I had heard at his house earlier that day. I knew from that point on that I was on a mission to acquire a tube unit. After spending some time here on the 2-channel forum, and having Kelly aka Mobile around(which I miss) talking non-stop about the Eico HF-81, I decided to take a chance and purchased one off of eBay. That was one of the best moves I have ever made. I ended up finding one in great condition with a "buy it now" of $200 and have never once regretted it. Sheesh...the Yamaha unit cost more than that at Best Buy and it can't hold a candle to the little 50 year old Eico. If I were you I would wait a little longer, assuming you can afford to, to try and find a reasonably priced integrated tube amp that you can connect those Belles to. They will love you for it. You don't need some multi thousand dollar setup with a seperate tube preamp, tube amp, tube cd player and such. Those Belles would blow you away for less than $500. Whatever you do just make yourself happy. That is really all that matters. If you think that means selling the Belles then by all means do it.
  5. Craig, You are starting to worry me. I have actually been wanting to send you the Eico for quite some time now; I'm sure you remember some of my PM's to you. It's just that at the time I had nothing else to power the Khorns and I can't go without my crack, I mean music, for too long or I start to get the jitters. Now that I have acquired these Mac units the time to go ahead and do that has probably arrived. Oh what the heck...how does all of this work anyhow? When you find something that needs replacing, assuming you do and you probably will, do you email me a list of options to choose from? I remember a post not too long ago about someone putting the Elna Cerafins in their unit instead of the typical Sprague Atoms. Go ahead and PM with your snail mail address and we can get this underway. I also have a few questions I want to ask you by PM which I will do so when I reply. Thanks, Ryan
  6. Does anybody know what I need to alter to make that link clickable?
  7. Take a look at these monsters. I wonder if they are worth the cash. http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?ampstube&1056347403&class&3&4&
  8. ---------------- On 4/24/2003 1:35:20 PM ssh wrote: I thought each of the 3 options of tube types might exhibit a different musicality, besides differences in output. ---------------- I am sure this is probably a correct statement. My experience with SET was solely limited to the Laurels I had for about two months which is why I don't really feel qualified to be talking about this in the first place. A have never heard a good 2A3 or 45 although I plan to do so in the future. I'm sure each design definitely has a different musicality to it and others, with more experience than myself, will eventually show up with their input. The Eico was the first tube unit I acquired and I just feel in love with the push-pull sound. It definitely has a wonderful overall package to it considering bass and midrange. Within the next couple of hours I'm sure the SET lovers here will provide you with the details you are looking for.
  9. Vladi, When you say you listen to Rock and Blues and such and then ask whether amp selection has anything to do with that the answer is YES. This is something you will learn if you choose to start experimenting with different tube amps. The only recommendation I can give you if you want to enter the world of tubes is to get an EICO HF-81 or a Scott unit. I believe the Scott unit of choice is the 299B. These two should fit nicely in to your budget. Buying vintage equipment off of eBay does not have to be a scary experience. It does require a bit of good judgement, a little patience, and some common sense though. You just need to scope out eBay on a regular basis, like the rest of us here, and try and find a unit in good condition with a seller that is reputable. The really cool thing about this forum is that everyone is on the lookout for one another and people usually inform others when a unit of good quality comes available. If you check out my sig you will notice my equipment. The Eico was purchased off of eBay and the Rega Planet was purchased off of audiogon. I too was skeptic about purchasing a fifty year old unit that was obviously used and could have had lord knows how many owners; however, you just have to take a risk sometimes to get the reward you are looking for. I was extremely lucky acquiring the Eico that I did. So far it has performed flawlessly and I haven't felt the need to send it to Craig yet for a refurbishing. I'm sure that will be in its future, but for now it works like a charm. The output from this little baby is more than sufficient to power most speakers especially Klipsch. I have to warn you though...tube amp acquisition is a DISEASE. Once you get your first, and hear how good it sounds, you are going to eventually want more...and that's a good thing. I started with the Eico about a year and a half ago and just recently, within the last few weeks, purchased the McIntosh units. Take the risk...your ears will appreciate it.
  10. Well let's see here.... 300B typically push 8W-15W 2A3 typically push 2.5W-4.5W 45's typically push 1.5W-2.5W At least I think that's about right. As far as the Welborne Labs DRD amps are concerned I think they are still a bit new to find some objective reviews here. Some may have had some experience and will possibly speak up soon. I used to have a pair of Ultimate Laurel 300B's but sold them in order to acquire a couple of McIntosh units. As far as advantages and disadvantages are concerned the few I can think of relate simply to output. In my opinion 2A3 and 45 amps are made for jazz, classical, opera and such. They just don't have what it takes to power hard rock and especially electronic music. What they do have however is EXTREME clarity and openness with a lovely attention to detail. The 300B could be used for more of your powerful recordings but for me it still wasn't enough. I gave up tube rectification for solid state rectification moving over to the McIntosh units which I believe plays a huge part in creating the sound my ears want to hear. There just seems to be more authority in the sound and the midrange with McIntosh is simply lush and magical. I must admit that my experience with SET is VERY minimal and I don't really feel qualified to make any official assumptions about their performance. I liked what I heard when I had the Laurels a great deal; I simply needed a little more meaty bass. I plan to try another SET setup in the future but for right now I am content with what I have. If you should end up getting any of the new DRD units I, and others here, would really like to hear your opinion on them. As far as assembly is concerned I purchased mine already assembled...the Laurels that is. A gent on the forum by the name of Erik has some good experience working on Moondogs and will probably chime in here pretty soon to give you his $.02. Also, try doing a search for Welborne, Moondogs, or Laurels and you will uncover a number of posts that may have information you were unaware of.

Try sending $2,500 for a McIntosh tube amp. I don't know why people worry so much about sending tellers/cashiers checks. They can be tracked just as well as personal checks or money orders into the account they were deposited in. I never waste time with services like Escrow or Paypal. Why would I want to pay someone else an extra $50-100 on a transaction that I can handle myself?
  12. I love it when people like C&S try to wax intellectual spitting out really "grandiose" words in order to "try" and be "hip and cool" in a post where he is bashing the thought of being "hip and cool." You are so "cool", whatever that means in the first place, for being "different" and in supposed emotional contact with the musicians that made this lovely jazz in the past. Who gives a **** how someone interprets music through their own ears and how they decide to spend their OWN money? I believe this post started as a means of informing fellow board members about an album they might be interested in inquiring. I doesn't however call for your "i want to be a smart guy" subtle insults calling people racist because you don't agree with their views or the way they worded their post. May I suggest you try starting your own thread sometime to discuss that which you find necessary instead of hijacking someone else's in a means to spread your proper propaganda.
  13. Allan, That is an extrememly generous and kind offer. Thank you. I would definitely like to take you up on that. The tubes that came with the amp appear to be the originals or perhaps he just replaced them with the same over the years. The 6L6's are labeled McIntosh. I really need to invest in a tube tester. I have no idea what the life of them is like but they sound pretty strong. I would love to compare them with the GEC's. Also, I forgot to comment on it in my last reply but you mentioned the Mullard CV4004 in regards to the C22. What would you say the going rate on those would be right now? I saw Upscale Audio selling them on audigon about three weeks ago. They had them priced at $55 and $60 for the "private reserve" whatever that means. Is that a decent price for NOS CV4004's or can better be had? The C22 has Telefunkens in it right now. The seller said they had only been in the unit about a year. I will PM you with my mailing address. Let me know the shipping cost and I'll send you a check. Ryan
  14. Fini, Thanks for the thumbs up on the quote. It is one of my favorites in all of history. It is scary how true those words still ring today literally hundreds of years after they were first uttered. The Patriot Act and push for "homeland security" really scare me; but, I will leave it at that since this is not a political discussion forum. Allan and others, This is really quite strange. Yesterday I met up with the gentleman I purchased the Khorns from to discuss my newly purchased equipment over some tea. He mentioned to me that the MC240 that he was using on the Khorns has just been sitting in his closet for the past two years collecting dust and that he was actually in the market to sell it. He anticipated getting new speakers to replace the Khorns, which he would have used the 240 to drive, but he never got around to it and doesn't know when he will find the time. So, needless to say, I can now cross the 240 off of my list of "Mac items I need to acquire." He gave me the sweetest deal being a repeat customer. As soon as I have a few days/weeks to demo both these amps with the C22 I will let all of you know my take on each. Thanks again for the feedback. Ryan
  15. Thanks for the feedback so far. I think what I will have to do is acquire a good example of each the MC30's, a MC225, and an MC240 and then compare all four of them and see which sounds the best with the C22. The gentleman I purchased the Khorns from, about two years ago, was driving them with a Mac MX110 and an MC240. They sounded so incredible at the time. I realize I don't need anywhere near that kind of power with these speakers but it was somewhat of a package deal and the price was too good to pass up. You can't really go wrong investing in vintage Mac equipment as it seems to only go up in value. I have always wanted to try a good pair of MC30's but they seem to be quite rare and only pop up on ebay and audiogon every once in awhile. I'll keep an eye out for some of the GEC KT-88's and let you know how this setup turns out.
  16. I just acquired a McIntosh C22 preamp and an MC275 for my Khorns. I was wondering if anyone has had any past or current experience with the MC275. Such as what tubes sound best with the unit. What would be the difference sonically between KT-88's and 6550's? Can anyone recommend some good choices for each tube style? Thanks, Ryan
  17. It was so nice to not see Schuey on the podium for the first race of the season. Also, Renault is ahead of Ferrari by one point right now in the Constructor's Championship. LOL. That isn't something you see everyday. I was surprised to see ol Rubes go out so early in the race and personally I was hoping that Kimi would pull off the win. I can't stand Coulthard. All in all a very good race. I can't wait for Interlagos...my favorite track of the season.
  18. I have only heard the MC240 and LOVED it. I would really like to get a hold of some MC30's or an MC225 to see how they compare but demoing equipment aint cheap.
  19. ---------------- On 2/17/2003 10:56:02 PM TBrennan wrote: Radiohead---So what's the matter with Fords? Not enough status for you? Cars that are reliable and strong running ain't good enough? You prefer tempermental German crap that costs tons of dough to fix? You're not concerned with just performence but want a big-bucks name plate to impress the trollops? And the Cobra weighs 3665 pounds nimrod, not 4000. Not bad for a 4 seat car packing 390 hp. ---------------- Well NIMROD. As you can see, since a drive an S2000, I prefer Japanese cars over any other, including German. Also, apparently I like a roadster or better yet a convertible. So NIMROD go and check the stats on the 03 Cobra Convertible, no wait I'll do it for you. 3,780 lbs. plus an average 200 lb. driver is 3,990 lbs and that's not including gas. Pretty damn close to 4,000 if you ask me and I'm sure to the rest of the people here. Damn you're a rocket scientist. As for my disappreciation for Ford well...I don't even think I need to explain. The fact that you think a quarter mile jaunt constitutes a race clearly exemplifies your idiotic, insulting response. If you want to see what TRUE racing is all about try tuning in to the Speed Channel on March 9th. There you will see the opening race of the Formula 1 season in Melbourne, Australia. I suppose you are actually one of those that believes NASCAR is racing too...right? You probably think there is talent involved in making four left turns.
  20. Well I left this thread for a little while but had to come back. Huuummm....SL55, 911, or Mustang Cobra??? Uhhh..no. I could care less how much horsepower you could get out of the Ford it's still a Ford. Secondly the damn thing weighs almost 4,000 lbs. and a 911 twin turbo or GT2 stock would spank the crap out of it even with $5,000 worth of mods. For the amount of money your talking about spending on the Cobra I would buy a Z06, slap a supercharger on it, and go Cobra hunting. For the 993 vs. 996 debate. 993 hands down. 996 can't compete. As far as horsepower per liter is concerned my current ride, 2003 S2000, puts out 120. The car only cost $30,000 and is honestly more fun to drive than anything else I have been behind the wheel of, except for the new Carrera 4S I test drove the other day. It definitely brought a smile to my face but wasn't a droptop, and in my opinion, not worth the extra $50,000. I would rather give up some torque and keep the Honda reliability. Right now, between Porsche and MB, I would go with the soon to be released GT3 or a 2004 E55 AMG with the top of the line RENNtech performance package added to it. Now that would be the sleeper of all sleepers.
  21. whell, Ask him for the serial numbers off the back of each speaker and calculate what year they are. I suppose $3,000 is decent but I believe you could find a much better price if you hold out a bit longer. I purchased mine a little over a year ago from a local seller in downtown Houston. I got lucky and saw his classifed ad in the local paper the first day it printed. When I went to look at them he told me I was the first to call so I had first chance at them. While I was there demoing the speakers he had two other calls from interested parties. I quickly ran to the bank to get him some cash for a deposit. He was selling them for $1700. Now that I have been enjoying them for the past year I can say I would have paid more; however, $2500 would be my limit. For $2500 they would have to be as nice as the Rosewood's that went on eBay last month minus Paul's signature of course.
  22. This is a trick question....right? Porsche 911 GT1.
  23. I really don't know how this film got hyped up too be so scary. It isn't. The story is an interesting concept but it's still another lame teen horror movie. Don't get your hopes up.
