  1. Picture while playing the first test. Bob Marley
  2. Hi all, I have been putting together some Klipsch K-horn, Cornwall inspired Altec two-ways. I just finished the crossovers tonight, and have the cabinet final assembly to go. The crossovers are 2nd order butterworth crossed at 600hz. They use ALKs design for attenuation with the 10ohm swamping resistor. I put spade lugs on the ends of the wires that attach to the autoformer so I could play with tap settings w/o soldering. Fired them up tonight. The drivers are mounted on the motor board with no cabinet just to play. Dan
  3. ---------------- That gives us a nice two-channel system with phono, CD, and SACD (no DVD or DVD-A, alas) for the total system price of $546,030 or thereabouts. ---------------- Holy cow Ray!! This would make a great movie. You know the plot. "If you can spend over a half a Millon on a 2 channel system in 3 days you get to keep it and earn dear Uncle Alberts 100 Million dollar empire, otherwise it all goes to the butler's dog with the pink sweater."
  4. I often have trouble seeing the pictures that are in the very first post of any thread. Erik, I bet if you re-posted the picture now everyone could see it. I also love those old radios. I enjoy listening to baseball games on them. I know, I'm quirky. Dan
  5. Thanks for the help guys. It has been working ever since I tapped on it, but I don't believe that whatever caused it won't be back. It has been my experience that intermitant problems don't just go away. I have a packed weekend ahead of me. I'm going to take them apart Monday night and report what I find. Gil, I have a multimeter, I just have to dig it out. What should the DCR be on the woofer? Dan
  6. Last night I was listening to some DMB. I sat down and quickly realized that the left channel sounded thin. I put my ear to the woofer and there was nothing. Plenty of sound coming from the tweeter and squaker but the woof was silent. Like the simpleton that I am, I tapped the cone with my finger and voila! the sound came back! I haven't taken the back off to see if there was a loose wire, but what else could it be? Is it possible that the driver was mechanically bound up and my tapping freed up its movement? Could it be a voice coil going? Should I be on the lookout for a replacement woofer?
  7. Dee, I decided to take your advice and wait till I have the plugs. My crossover parts came and I have been trying to finish up these cabinets so I can start fiddling with the crossovers. When I get some digital pics I will post them in the odds and mods area. Thanks for the help Dee and everyone!! Dan
  8. This is one of the coolest things I have ever seen on Ebay! Wish I could afford it!
  9. Cool. I'm surprised that the Sensitivity is only 97dB. Those drivers are around 108 and 105 1W/1M on thier own.
  10. I wonder if you could get the Alan Parsons material through KaaZaa?
  11. I am installing some binding posts tonight. What should the spacing be to allow bananna plugs to line up? (I don't have the bananna plugs) thx, Dan
  12. The woofers are 16ohm rated at 75watts. 105dB 1W/1M Is there a risk of damage from too much power with some of these 200+W amps?
  13. It is sort of a Cornwall/K-Horn inspired VOTT. The cabinet will be tuned to 40hz. Fun!
  14. Dean, This is what has been keeping me busy! Dan
  15. The cross will be at 500Hz. I will definately be buying used, the budget is tight. I would like to be under $300 if possible.
  16. How do Rotel amps stack up against the other favorites?
  17. The "Decorator" Heresy. Does anyone know how to put more than on picture in the same post?
  18. Run down to the local craft/fabric store, Pick up a pair of 16" or 18" embroidery hoops, some speaker grill cloth, some velcro and a hot melt glue gun. Discard the outer ring. Strech the cloth over the hoop and glue from the back side of the hoop. velcro to the front of the speakers. The "Decorator look" of your Cornwalls will be retained, and your woofers protected. The whole thing can be done for under $25. I did this on my DIY center and the Decorator Heresys are next! (The edges are not fuzzy its my camera.)
  19. Congrats Craig! Post some pics and your first impressions when they arrive!
  20. Al, Would it be possible to modify your design for use in a 2-way system? I will be running an Altec rig with 909-16a/511b and 515E. Both drivers are 16ohms and crossover point would be 500hz. I think I would need about 3dB of attenuation. Any help you could provide would be appreciated! Dan
  21. I just picked up Diana Krall "Live in Paris". I have read here and there that she is a wonderful vocalist and musician, and she is. However, no one ever mentioned that she was such a hottie. That woman is very talented! In many concerts the surrounds handle crowd noise. In this recording the rears carry alot of the piano. It sounds like you are sitting onstage. If you buy this concert make sure you surrounds are up to the task.
