  1. Those are the late 60's 70's Matsushita japan. very good lasting tubes.
  2. Any comments on the dbx 228? expander / noise reduction? specifically for reel to reel noise reduction. Thanks!
  3. Agree, Its all personal preference. Bottom lime is you found the speaker you wanted. There is always a room for adjustments. I wish I didn't have to this for I like spending more time in recording. But heck its a part of package.
  4. Well understood. Have you had experience with front ports? They have a similarity but not quite on what I experienced. I really like the sound on both but I play a bit more louder than the norm and my amp is set to produce heavier bass. When I drive the front port on elevator to normal volume, it sounds great. But when I kick over 89 db. and up, the sound on the porthole is beginning to reverberate towards my chest like a bazooka..☹️. Of course I need some treatment too but thats what just I get on higher volumes. But the beauty of this speaker I'm using which is a KG-3.5, the single 8 inch is just right for me which is 600 sq ft. I can play 98 db but I cant say its loud because it I can still talk to someone on top of that sound level. It took me years to setup my system sounding like it. But people have different listening preferences. Have you ever heard the newer speakers with the rear flared porting. The bass blends to the wall and it ripples smoothly than the earlier round ports. That's just like what I hear because I have a modded R610-F driven by a 300b amp. Its amazing what a single 6.5 speaker with an over sized cabinet can do. Down firing port is a different story, you might wanna check it out too. But of course its all our preference. I thought Id bring it up. If I had the choice, Id like to have my speaker cabinet inside in like a walk-in closet. I tried it long time ago and it has an interesting different kind of sound.
  5. This is an interesting topic. I was actually planning to modify my kg-3.5 to a more added chamber to increase the volume and switching the front to a back firing port.
  6. That stand on the left is the one that I want to get for my KG-3.5. I want it 99% semi attached to the speaker cabinet. Any takes?
  7. I have a SE and a push pull 300b. The push-pull, I can easily dial the wattage higher but not the SET for its already running hot. So 15 watts was my question.... But in terms of test bench mark, 15 watts maybe. Because I saw the result on my other amp which is a 6C33C-b tube and 50wpc is the most we can dial on a push pull 2 tubes per that gave us almost zero distortion in 100 watts. So that's probably what they mean. Never the less and most important if the amp is perfectly matched to your system which obviously sounds good. I think that shines more than anything.
  8. You can always get a lot of reel machines especially in Europe which I think is more selections and quality. A fine example is this small Akai deck in smaller size and lighter weight than the bigger wigs (see size and weight below)but had the audiophile sound. Not probably as nice as your Revox or your favorite Grundig, but enough to take you to the next level in a 1/4 x 7 inch reel, 7.5 ips with ferrite heads. Its a big WoW for a home hifi. The tapes are still out there and currently being manufactured by recording the masters. and the price is very reasonable. Not the best recording on my iphone since I was doing a test run after calibration. I love this deck too. One of my few decks that can run 8 hours and not heating up. Very simple to maintain on with 1 motor. An absolute playback machine. Best of luck to your journey. Description The Akai 4000DS is a four-track, two-channel stereo reel to reel tape recorder for use with 7" Specifications Track system: 4-track, 2-channel, stereo/monaural system Heads: 1 x record, 1 x playback, 1 x erase Motor: 1 x SSM-1 4-pole induction Reel size: up to 7 inch reel Tape speeds: 3 3⁄4 7 1⁄2 ips Wow and flutter: 0.15% (7 1⁄2 ips) Frequency response: 30Hz to 23kHz (7 1⁄2 ips) Signal to Noise Ratio: 50dB Total harmonic distortion: 1.5% Crosstalk: 50dB Input: 70mV (line), 7mV (DIN), 0.8mV (mic) Output: 1.228V (line), 0.4V (DIN) Semiconductors: 11 x transistors, 4 x IC, 4 x diodes Dimensions: 406 x 314 x 194mm Weight: 11.4kg Rock and Roll.....😺 Test Akai 4000D 01-27-2023 Hand To Mouth - playback video
  9. Hi.. You mean the playback trigger solenoid that pushes the pinch roller? Oooh I miss that ones and I didnt know the piston have to be lightly grease. O'm gonna try to sneak in an injection grease. I think i can reach it from the outside.
  10. I just got the new 2022 OMD triple album yesterday. Listening to it now on a digital sample and trying to figure out what reel tape I should use on this. I wanna copy both in the cassette too since I have the dragon ready in the recording rack with a Sony HSF-90. One of my best sounding reel recordings was the previous OMD Live and I was using an ampex tape. Boy when I playback the reel it sounded like it just turned up the amp to 200 watts. McClusky's voice is just so good especially for his age now.
  11. That was a lot of work. I have to do everything that I can and also I have to pull the pinch roller arm inside.. It was 94% stuck. Afterwards everything seems to be working the way its suppose to be. The only thing I don't feel right the supply reel lever tension. I wanna pull put that shaft and re-grease it. My cir-clip tool is not long enough. I need to buy a long one. I want to set it looser than what it is wont rub the heads. Other than that it sounds great. I brought it up slowly in variac and Its running freely and very quiet. Amazing. Happy Saturday. 😺
  12. I just order this.. Man I forgot. There should be some little oil in there. I have a little amount of teac oil left.
  13. "synthetic sintered bearing oil" We dont have that oil here so the equivalent should be a high speed 20W machine shop head synthetic oil. Is that correct? When I get it running and see what I need I'll add all the belts and rubbers.. Thank you... 😺
  14. Mornin' - (Guten Morgen) Was working in the Teac that I bought last week while double checking all the moving parts and re-lubing it.. making sure its not frozen. However I ran out of Teac motor oil.. Do you think its okay to use the 3 in 1 "Blue" motor oil? (picture below) However the rest of the seems reel components seems to be in in fine shape. Unbelievable the belt is still new especially the counter belt is still tight. Anyways I'm just waiting to get out of the job soon and will be able to work on this and do a test. I'm gonna power it up with the variac real slow to revive the components. It will be a miracle if this is gonna run flawlessly after being in the box new for almost 42 years. Wish me luck.
  15. Definitely you can raise the voltage but It also affects the tube life which of course you dont want to do. I have a custom made 32/50 switchable watt tube amp. Since I insisted on maxing the top end, I was warned by the designer about using the 50 watts which roughly decreases the tube life. 100 % Max Safe Dissipation = 87% Most of the new made tubes (Not the NOS) when it hits the tube life of 82-85%, the sound is deteriorating and can be obvious not like the vintage ones especially the mullard daystrom that I used and was built all the way from the 50's. Surprisingly that tube can sing even in its last 10% life. 😺 Back to the Primaluna. I think they are wonder amps. for the money theyre asking atleast when I bought the prologue classic, its very hard to match the sound of a mini amp thats built and weights like a tank. For $1,800 that I paid for, I can switch from EL34 to KT-120 of I want power and music. But these amps are powerful enough as it is.
  16. Just wondering though what is important is you love the sound. That model had been praise by alot of people I know that has attention to detail. Congrats!
  17. I have a question in the Cary Cad. How did the designer get 15 watts in a non parallel SET? Thanks.. CCG
  18. @MicroMara Great to hear. The Can believe this speaker sound so warm and clear combining with the horn gives you that right amount of classy sound even on small to big room. Cant wait to play it tomorrow for I'm off. Its great to listen to these home hifi stereo. The down side is, I cant stand listening to my car stereo anymore unless they bring back the original 1980's Alpine, Grundig, Blaupunkt, Fujitsu... The good news is the American made Rockford Fosgate amp is still in its old school formula and the price is in reach. Enjoy. I wanna give you an update on the new reel to reel that I got just waiting for the oil. I'll pot it in the proper threading later on. Take care.
  19. There are also other amp options besides one guy I can recommend is Fluxion Amp Designed and Made in Canada. I started from Dynaco EL34 (22 years) in the 80's, then KT88 and EL84 (20 years). I bought a Primaluna Prologue Classic (3 years ago). I still have all of the amps besides the Dynaco I sold it after 25+ years. Then I bought the Fluxion 300b and another exotic amp in assembly right now. I been using mine going 3 years now. I cannot compare it for I had a wonderful relationship with my previous amp. But this is the one I'm using now. The only thing I do know is I have 2 quad set of Mullard EL34 that I bought back in 1989 NOS from early 60's running those dynaco and possibly the Primaluna in the future. After all these years, I just sold it last February and I dont even know why? Anyways you can check him out Mr. Ahn. Best CCG
  20. Excellent gears and pretty nice recording library! They said the old Ampex that's fully dialed can sound better than a Studer. We just gotta keep on looking for the closes music DNA we can find. A while back I bought a home studio reel tape containing the 6 first Gino Vanelli albums. I have a few if the original A&M vinyl pressings and it doesn't even get close to the sound of the reel. That was a jackpot. I wish I also bought that player.. 3 Years ago I almost had a chance to buy an old Telefunken. That was a blow!😵
  21. Right. gotta make sure everything is alright before I put it in the variac. By the way have you tried RTM. Recording The Masters tapes?
  22. Wow that's a real nice looking deck. I never owned a Tanderg reel but I have a cassette deck and its probably the most robust and best sounding playback cassette deck I own. By the way, I forgot to mention to you that I bought another reel last week. Its a bit old Tascam that was stored in a garage for over 37 years. I'm skeptical that the pulley's and motors might be in a frozen condition. But its still in the original box. I'm excited and nervous too because it might look like new but if that deck wasn't stored correctly especially leaving it in a storage with a non climate controlled temperature, that could be my invisible enemy. I just couldn't say NO when I saw this... Hopefully it works and I'll have DJ Scratch play with it along the way...
  23. Looking forward to hear the new NAD. Was wondering what is the difference between the previous node 2i and the new one in sound?
  24. Howdy, Great. I have a Teac and currently finishing up the Akai I bought a year ago. Its amazing how these Akai are compact in size and weight for a 7 inch home hifi deck. What do you have? Thanks, CCG
