  1. If you get a pair, I will value your opinion of them. I wonder how they will stack up against the Tektons? Does Justin offer a 'Trial Period' like Eric does?
  2. Mark, Looks to be similar to Tektons...... Maybe better because they are smaller!
  3. Is there a link to a schematic of what you are doing here?
  4. I use SET amps with only 1.8 or 2.3 watts per channel on my horns and tweeters, so Bi-amping is a real improvement for me. I use Class 'D' chip amps on the bass bins.
  5. Yes, I still have the Tektons. They are in my Shop area that I listen to when building stuff. --- Thanks for turning me on to them. I use a Eastern Electric Minimax Tube Dac with Volume Control. I am bi-amping with SET Amps (45 or 2A3) on the Tweets and Horns. And Hypex Plate Amps on the Bass Bins. I was at Eric's site earlier today, and he is no longer making any single driver designs, only 2-way. Argh! Naturally, I sold mine when we moved and now I wish I had them back. Your DAC has some interesting specs as shown by Mike. What crossover do you use? Well, I have 2 crossovers. One is the active crossover that is built into the Hypex Amps. This is between the Bass Bins and the Horns. Then I use a Modified Type 'A' section between the Horns and Tweeters. BTW - If you call up Eric, he would probably build you a single driver speaker. He did some custom work for me that was un-related to his standard line of products.

  7. Of course to play LPs you will need a preamp, there's no choice. As to connecting a source direct to a power amp, there's several possibilities. If the source has a VC already, and enough gain, and is low enough impedance, then that's a good bet to plug directly to the amp. But, if there is no VC on the source, and you just hang a passive VC on the source with cables going to the amp, you can get some rolloff and some added noise. I rarely find that a passive preamp (oxymoron, really) is very useful. So, as to the question, my answer is sometimes yes, sometimes no. Mark, In my case I am not using any LPs. And I always use a tube DAC which my digital sources are fed, which has a volume control. So what are your comments in lieu of this.
  8. How about the difference between a Pre-amp and no-pre-amp at all. Can a Pre-amp improve the sound (Other than just increased gain) over no pre-amp at all? And can you give an example of how ? Thanks
  9. The amp that the OP listened to was not a SET amp but a Single- Ended Pentode amp. Far different than a SET amp, which is a Single Ended Triode Amp. I would not jump to this conclusion unless you have auditioned a 2A3 or 45 SET amp.
  10. Did you ever look into the Mytek DAC ?
  11. I am also looking at the DAC2 L version Did you realize that they have a DAC 2 without a headphone amp and jacks for $200 less. It also has a much cleaner faceplate than the HGC version? How did you use a tape buffer with the DAC-1 and what was it for???? I am also looking at a Mytek DAC which is in the same league. I may order them both and decide. Both have 30 day trials.
  12. Yes, the Oris Horn Designer also makes some modifications to this Driver, as well as his own passive crossover between the Coaxial Drivers.
  13. Now you have us wondering how things are wired, lol. Taking the signal from the speaker level outputs were new to me as well. But, there are several advantages to it. Both amps seem to be in 'sync' a bit better. A lot fewer cables and shorter runs.
  14. My setup is different than these. I can't draw it because I am on the road. From my pre-amp to my tube amps to my passive crossover to my Horns/Tweeters. Also from my Tube Amp to my Bass Amps to an active crossover to my Woofers. Not sure what kind of bi-amping this is, but it is the cat's meow.
  15. Not sure what you mean by 'Passive Bi-amping', I hope you are not confusing Bi-wiring from Bi-amping with a Passive Crossover between the Mid/high drivers. I am running an active Crossover between the Bass Bins and Midrange/Tweeters. But a Passive between the Mids and Tweeters. I have an active crossover between the Bass Bins and the Mids/tweeter. Biggest improvement in a Decade for me.
  16. Follow this link and scroll down until you get to the NBS Pre-amp..... http://www.nosvalves.com/index4.htm I bought one.
  17. Yeah, I think they're OK too, for the Bass. I wouldn't hook them up to the Top End though. The biggest improvement did not come from the Hypex directly. It came from off loading the Bass from my SET amps.
  18. Actually, the Orphean System crosses over at 270 hz........Plenty low enough for the Khorn Bass Bins.....I am running them at 400 hz. now (And yes it could be better than that)........ I don't need to choose drivers as I ordered the complete Orphean System. Which includes the Horns, Drivers and Passive Crossover for the Dirver's Midrange and tweeter. They are the BMS 4592ND Actually most all Horns are my Favorites !! I have heard a lot of good ones..... We'll see if the Oris Horns can top my Altec Multicells. I hope they do, but you never know until you get them into your system.
  19. These are the same drivers that come with the Oris Horns that I just ordered. They have the tweeter also, correct? What kind of crossover are you using for these drivers? What Freq?, Slope? etc...
  20. You pretty much nailed it!.......I have been pretty satisfied with the sound of my Khorn Bass BIns and Altec Midrange Horns, but that alone does not satisfy my need to Putz with things. So, I ordered a pair of Oris Horns to be delivered this coming Spring......My last upgrade will be a Boombox in my Coffin. Oh, you are going to like those Oris horns! I have heard the Oris 200 but not the Orphean System. I see you have the 150s......Bert claims the Orphean is his best system to date. I'll get them in the spring when I get back from Florida this winter. Where are you located?
  21. Here is the reason....The amplifers only have 1 input, so you need two, one for each channel. I did not think this up all by myself. I have also ordered a pair of Oris Horns and Drivers from the Netherlands. The designer of Oris horns reccomends that you run these amps on the Bass Bins. These amps are also from the Netherlands. He does not like Class 'T' amps. You are familar with Oris Horns? Since, I am buying his speakers, I am not going to try and re-invent what he's already done. I went with the flow...
  22. The 45 amps are still running through the passive portion of the modified Type 'A's that I have. Not wide open, as I have a volume control on them. The hypex has it's own volume control for the Bass. These are the very amps that Bert from Oris reccommended He uses them for his Orphean System as well. Passive on the Mids/tweeters and the Hypex between the Bass and Midrange. SubXeRo ----- Not sure what you mean by 'Bench'. They are not Subwoofer amps.
  23. 8 Years ago I replaced the Midrange Horns of my Khorns with the Altec 1005B horns and 288-16K Drivers. That was the Biggest Improvement in audio that I made since getting the Klipschorns. Last month I got a pair of Hypex PSC2.400 Plate Amps and went down the path of Bi-amping. With about 600 watts of Class D Amps per channel on the Bass Bins and my Flea Watt 45 amps on the Midrange and Tweeter, I now have all the headroom I want. The amps have a Crossover designer built into it that you simply hook up to your PC and design a Filter and attenuate the Bass to your liking. I'll probably never go back to single ampling again. About $800 for the upgrade....Cheap in the high-end Audio World. Got them at Madisonsound. I made some Paduak Wood Cases for these Plate Amps. A full 1 inch thick and 6 inches Deep for stability.
  24. You pretty much nailed it!.......I have been pretty satisfied with the sound of my Khorn Bass BIns and Altec Midrange Horns, but that alone does not satisfy my need to Putz with things. 25. All forgiven no problem....I am bi-amping now and it is the biggest single improvement that I have made to my system since I swapped out the midrange horns. I've got 800 watts per chanel on the Bass bins now with a whopping 1.8 watts per channel on the mids and tweeters. I will probably be getting some different horns in the near future...Maybe Oris and they include the passive crossover with them. I am using Hypex Plate Amps on the Bass Bins that have an active crossover built into them. I might understand them in a few years.
