  1. I couldn't agree with you more... unfortunately the actual commitment seems to be taken too lightly by my generation. She said that she felt that "rush" in her heart, for me, automatically for almost 6 years. Our decline all started with a crush for another guy, and her attempt to understand why my rush was replaced for one for someone else. Her conclusion is that something is wrong and since it hasn't improved in the last 6mths... it must be time to move on. As much as one would like to pinpoint a reason, the only valid one I've found is the "seven year itch"... which often follows the change of a relationship from "discovery" to "comfort" phases. That normally happens after 4 years. He11, I should be proud to have given her that feeling for 6 years... but that is little consolation right now. Unfortunately most of her friends share the "automatic" love viewpoint... but with most of them also about 27yrs old, none have lived with their mates long enough to get to the comfort phase. Comfort, it seems, is considered overrated today... OTOH, my network of friends is very small... so I find myself with a very small support group. Over the years I had adopted hers, which only alienates me further. The feeling of loss is compounded to that of failure. I am not very good at this, and am a hopeless romantic. I thought I felt numb yesterday... today I feel like I've been hit by a Mack truck. ROb
  2. This is actually the second time i lived through this as I had gotten married when I graduated from school. Shortly after she left me for someone else... I met Isabelle... this second one. I believed this one was better than all that, and I was not ready to live through this again... but are we ever "ready"? Somehow my heart keeps blaming myself for so many minute details I should have done differently... even though my mind knows she is the one responsible for the decision. She seemed very convinced of it to boot. Loosing a loved one, unfortunately, doesn't get easier with experience... I'm honestly I little numbed by all this. ROb PS: Although we've been living together now for those 6-1/2 years... we were not actually married as I've kinda lost "faith" in the ceremony. Given our values, I don't really think it really made a difference though...
  3. since you guys have become an integral part of my life... i had to post this. After 6-1/2years with my luv, she has decided to call it quits... and left me this morning. Ironically she still thinks I'm a great guy, but feels the time has come to start a new chapter guided "by the North wind"... With the death of my dad in march followed by this... I'll think I'll be taking a little break from here, as I try to pick up my pieces.
  4. Very tight with a ±10' x 12' main HT area... check out the dimensions on http://home.comcast.net/~smallhousetheater/images/theater_layout.jpg . It is easy to plan a large no-holds-barred HT, but their's must have been like planning a RV interior where every last inch has purpose. IMHO, it only makes Glen's transformation even more impressive. [] ROb
  5. Actually that is basically what it comes down to... convenience versus look (a rattle free look...BTW). IMHO...a gypsum ceiling will also add more resale value to the home to boot... ROb PS: I think you were referring to Roxul brand of insulation between your joists?
  6. Loosing a loved one is never easy... as we realise how much we will miss them. Yet we should count ourselves lucky to have been able to share part of our lives with this person... and learn so much while gathering so many great memories. My mom humorously said "if we married people we hated, at least we wouldn't grieve so much"... My heart goes out to Ken's loved ones... ROb
  7. I would tend to agree, unless the reasoning for using an acoustic tile suspension is access to mechanical / electrical systems? Even so... personally i'm not a fan of their "rattle" potential even with the additional hold-down clips offered.
  8. Masonite? basically thin MDF? I built my IB manifold in a similar technique of MDF over plywood... which allowed a rigid screwing surface, flush driver mounting, and I nice paintable surface. Like Trey mentionned, the idea is to move the enclosure's panel resonances out of the audible range... so bracing goes a long way at achieving that. OTOH, my box sub was built simply using braced baltic birch plywood and no MDF. ROb
  9. Klipsch news page [] congratulations again, on a job well done.
  10. Two main reasons for adjusting phase at crossover: - The Phase inherently varies with frequency... regardless if you are looking at subs or tweeters. - The area which cancellations will occur is where two different speakers are playing the same frequency out of phase. This creates problems when using two speakers to reproduce a significant frequency range. They will be in phase at some frequencies, and out in others. The idea behind adjusting the phase at the crossover point is based on having ideally the two speakers types (mains and subs) only overlap in this region. This can be done by running mains as small and crossing over to the sub at a typical frequency like 80Hz, or using the mains as large and adjusting the sub's xover according to the natural roll off of the mains. Well, that's the ideal... ROb
  11. I would be interesting to compare the two side by side (same amplification)... i know there are quite a few reviews already out there, but it's always enjoyable to read different people's take on it.
  12. For those who wanted one.. I just got an email saying that even though it appeared "stock" at order time, mine is backordered till the 5 of June 06... ROb
  13. I misunderstood it as a clamshell (isobarik / push-pull) layout. Right now, I do have 4 of the 6 drivers physically inverted (with the correctly inverted polarities)... And I'm looking to see if I can't find 2 more so that I can have a symmetrical 8 total (4 per channel would also give me 4ohms versus 12ohms now). It's not too late as I actually thought about that... I don't remember what page it's on but the manifold is bolted to the concrete floor rather than the wall. The wall itself is entirely covered in glued-n-screwed oriented strand board on the backside... as well as both corners on the front side. I'm willing to admit that the trim work isn't entirely decoupled though... but I doubt it's capable of transmitting that kind of vibration. A quick scan of the album in Spec lab showed the bulk of it's bass content is actually in the 50Hz to 100Hz region but it does extend casually down to 20Hz. BTW, the 119db was more of a test as it is VERY loud (even with a compressed recording)... I gave Breakbeat Era a quick spin this morning... a much more dynamic sounding album with strong bass content down to about 10Hz. It did provide a much better feeling of the capability of the Khorn / IB combo... which both still seemed to loaf along regardless of the volume. Excursion was visible... but very reasonable. So far... IB's do live up to their hype... [8-|] More to come... ROb
  14. Just wondering why you selling it after only a month or so? I was considering getting an inexpensive AVR330 for 2.1 channel duty with video switching (runs under 300$ refurbished).
  15. Believe it or not, I'm the actual "decorator" of the house... so I've got a pretty good reign there. Mirrors BTW are out (as well as glass vases)... they make too much of a mess when the fall off. [8-|] Gave Tool's new album "10,000 Days" a quick spin before heading out to work today and the IB / Khorns were loafing along at 119db (C weighed, slow). The rattles were pretty unnoticeable at that volume. [] I haven't scanned it with Speclab yet... but it's a bit compressed... I'm guessing pretty strong 40 to 80Hz content, with a little stretching down to 20Hz. OTOH, the bassy start to Massive Attack's Angel is problematic for rattles since there is very little content other than the bass to drown out the vibrations. Pot lights and the door separating the back wave seem to be noisiest. Because I moved the projector back a couple of feet, it's support partially leans on the ceiling with resilient channels, which I'm guessing is the source of the vibration. I'll have to open the ceiling up and attach to the actual joists. Unfortunately the hush box I couldn't use, is rigidly attached to the structure and acts as a cross brace to boot... Later... ROb
  16. A quick update the equipment is in! Yup, moved and plugged it all in, as well as ran a couple of quick SPL checks. With all that, and my hectic life, I haven't gotten to watch my first movie yet, but I did run a couple of 2 channel CDs. Soundstage seem quite a bit better... but the room is a little live. Sub moves some serious air... but it also vibrates the entire home and my new Rattle Riddled Room (RRRR). Soundproofing seems almost useless given the possible intensity. I was concerned that there would be less tactile feel on the concrete section of the subfloor... but that won't be a problem. Unfortunately at louder volumes, it'll also shake the projector so I'll have to explore a different mounting method so that'll be less affected by ceiling vibrations. Other than that, the next major steps now are... watch a movie, chase down the 5,000 rattles, make new interconnects of proper length, and get some furniture. Later.. ROb's RRR
  17. Pretty much the point I'm at also... plus the fact that my sub-amp's power switch isn't accessible in the rack, so I needed to power it up semi-remotely. After a little more reading up, I opted to go with the Belkin as well. Features / price were right ... and I respect the brand even though it isn't a Furman. me too my dealer said $215 That's what i got when i froogle'd it I place my order at Provantage whom still seem to have a couple. http://www.provantage.com/belkin-ap21300-12~7BELD00X.htm I'm sure there are others if you check out froogle, yahoo shopping, pricegrabber, etc... Best part is alot of these guys also price match... so if stock runs out at one place, the other will probably give you the same price. I did this with a Behringer amp I picked up at music123... I'll post up a honest review when I get it, but I'll have to drive to the boarder when it arrives. Thanks again... ROb
  18. Thanks guys for the info so far... I read up a little more on AV UPSs and I agree that they are out, esp given that my amps would draw too much power to pass through them. I agree that APC (and Tripplite for that matter) make good products that actually do what they claim. I'm using a APC surge bar on my AV equipment and APC UPS's on my PCs at the moment... but unfortunately when it comes to AV Power Conditioners they are a little more money than I'm looking on spending (the H10BLK power conditioner by APC runs 260$) I am considering them; the current pricing is very aggressive. It is kinda of ironic for me, as I long felt that Monster sold overpriced gizmos. Truth is, I have no problem with the product... just the regular prices. A lot of guys picked one up last month with the 50$ rebate program they had running making the 3500MKII only 99$. I'm also curious about the PureAV... esp at under a 100$ with a lifetime warranty. They look pretty nice and Belkin is a relatively no-nonsense type of company. Thanks again... ROb PS: I've narrowed it down to one of these three... and am leaning to the PureAV PF40 Belkin PureAV PF30 AP20800-10 (85$) Belkin PureAV PF40 AP21300-12 (125$) Monster Reference PowerCenter HTS 3500 MKII (130$) refurbished Monster Reference PowerCenter HTS 3500 MKII (150$)
  19. I'm another one for trust and honesty... in a sexy package
  20. With that kind of feature set, they seem to be destined to become subwoofer amps... I doubt it... as they are fan cooled. If you're like me, you could live with a little less power... but prefer passive cooling. If they are, it takes them up a notch in features. As far as i remember CE's were quite a bit heavier and cheaper too.... ROb
  21. Ok, I know it's been asked 20,000 times... but I've been pretty surprised at some of the going prices on these things... Here I am, looking for a basic power bar/unit to power and protect... as well as hopefully organise my system. I don't have a ton of equipment, but I will have three power amps and a signal processor connected to the power unit. I need to be able to switch the amps with it as well as provide a delayed sequence to prevent a "thump" I'd like to keep it under 200$ to my door... Although I don't own one, I've been a fan of the Furman units and have disliked the Monster marketing. Unfortunately the sequencing Furmans (PS-XX) are pretty pricey compared the the home units which almost all offer delayed powering of the amps. Right now, with the current pricing I'm considering buying a Belkin PureAV unit... prices are very good as I believe they are upgrading models and liquidating the old ones. From previous posts (and current pricing), I gathered: Belkin F5C350-20A Rack-Mount Surge Protector (80$) but not sure it does delays Belkin PureAV PF30 ( AP20800-10 ) (85$) Belkin PureAV PF31 AP21100-12 11 (110$) Monster Reference PowerCenter HTS 3500 MKII (150$) Furman PS-8R (200$) but it has no AV protection Panamax MAX 5100 (225$) Or I could get an actual UPC like Belkin PureAV Battery Backup with AVR AP30800-10 (125$) Tripp-Lite Model LCR-2400 (260$) So... any opinions on these, particularly the PureAV PF30 AP20800-10 (85$) or the PureAV UPS AP30800-10 (125$)?? ROb
  22. Congratulations on the 9000 posts!!! You should update your signature to include the "Use em or lose em" slogan hmmm... i suddenly feel inspired... excuse me while i go and send off an email... []
  23. They used to, but no longer do. You could have bought the LF bin of the "D" models from Klipsch Pro... John Warren had a couple himself. I don't think Khorns are even available from Klipsch Pro any longer... which would explain why the LF aren't offered. http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/thread/392293.aspx I don't know alot about it though, but several oldtimers here could probably give you more info. On the other hand, PWK's Jubilee is now available as a LF cabinet. Those would make a great project IMHO... ROb
