In case you haven't noticed, the price on some 'luxury' items has plummeted, as people are selling off everything they have to afford to live and pay bills.

I would always stay away from sellers like the one that made this listing.....

Sorry, you might be an OK person, but I will never buy from anyone that can't describe an item or copy / paste with a 'stock' picture of a product. That is just one of my nitpicks... ( any apologies in advance to the spell check and phonetically challenged... )

I agree 100%.

I post the price spreads periodically because we still have fourm members who reply to "how much should I sell these for" type questions that their LaScala's are worth 1600 bucks.

There's a fellow right now thats been trying to get said 1600 bucks since last november. His exact speakers sold for 860 below.

[Y] I'm with you on this Michael. I'll add to that: listings with pictures of the components beneath 5 years dust and greasy fingerprints.

Split LSIs for 860??!!

Man, I gotta send my "people" to pay a visit to that photog in indyDevilCool

Go to the ad, check out the closeup HF photo- yours are going to be prettier than that.

Besides you know where they've been. That should count for something.

Split LSIs for 860??!!

Man, I gotta send my "people" to pay a visit to that photog in indyDevilCool

.....there are a few different versions of the metal trim split LSI.

a.) basic version has AA xovers, k-55-v mid driver, k-77 (alinco) and either a stamped frame k-43 or a k-33. This is what the 860 pair probally is...notice the label says diode protection....all AA's are diode protection...some AL's have diode protection...no AL-3's have diode proection. Some of these were labeld as professional versions. Some say industrial, and like the 860 pair, some only say lascala.

b.) AL xovers, K-55-M mid driver, k-77- m, K-43 stamped frame woofer. All the ones Ive seen say industrial.

c. ) AL-3, k-401 composite, cast frame k-43-kp, k-55-m mid driver, k-77-m tweeter. The untrimmed versions were labeled TLSI.

BG's could be either A.) or B.) above.

Exactly, that is why I am sending my people.[;)]

On a serious note, I have not heard one way or the other from my parents, but I believe the LSIs will be making the trip this week. Hopefully they will be here Thursday or Friday. I only have to hope that my parents can pack light for trip out east so there is enough room for my new kids. Hey Michael, don't you think I should have my parents connect them to the car stereo for the drive?[8][8]

To add to SF's comments:

The network should follow the mid driver. A K55V should always have an AA, K55M would be mated to AL2 or AL3. I've never seen anything else in an LSI but I've not seen them all, yet.

'professional' and 'industrial' don't really mean a thing. It's just a placard on the speaker.

Never seen a 401 horn on a LSI but that doesn't mean they didn't build a few in later years.

There were numerous cabinet versions, some built upside down for hanging, some with no handles or logo placards for clubs, etc. The logbooks at Klipsch show all types of these speakers built to spec, like the Heresy it was used in churches and auditoriums.

Lots of guys get the P and I mixed up, they stand for Portable and Install versions in the later KP and KI series.

When Colter gets old (really old as opposed to just normal old....), and moves to one of those RV parks in Florida, he'll have one of those golf carts with a pair of LS's strapped to the back... CoolStick out tongueWink

And don't forget the trailer with the MCM stacks all ready to go for instant block party. Colter's golf cart will be more like a souped up John Deere Gator than a standard golf cart.

Thanks for your efforts on cataloging eBay pricing. It is truly a public service and it's always fun to check out these posts.

That said, I'm going to dispute the headline on this thread. Is the price really falling through the floor? If so, how did a perfectly ordinary pair in this group sell for $1425?

I'm not a statistician, but I would like to play devil's advocate for a moment. I don't think a small cluster of low-priced eBay auctions is representative of the going price of LaScalas any more than a small cluster of high-priced ones, or even the average of the two groups. Why? Because there are so many variables in each of these auctions: condition, originality, location, description, photo quality, shipping arrangements, credibility of the seller, payment options, closing time and day, etc which all can greatly influence the sale price. As a result, it is very difficult to identify a trend with any certainty. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course. I'm just saying I'm not convinced.

In general, are many people holding off on discretionary purchases? Absolutely.

Are lots of people selling their stuff right now because they are hurting financially? No question.

Do big vintage speakers have a limited audience? Yup.

However there is some contrary evidence about retro audio gear dropping in value. I was in a used audio store and repair shop in Portland yesterday and asked about bringing in some high-end speakers to sell (not Klipsch). The owner encouraged me to do so and told me that his business is booming. I asked why, and he said he thinks more people are staying home instead of going out because of the economy. As a result some folks are buying decent used gear to keep themselves entertained, or getting stuff that needs repair fixed up. I heard similar observations a few weeks ago from a shop in Eugene. Certainly two store owners putting on a brave face during a recession proves even less than a bunch of auction results, but it is an interesting observation.

I personally think it is a great time to buy equipment. Not necessarily because the prices are all that low, but because rare and beautiful stuff is coming out of the woodwork like I've never seen before.

Am I engaging in wishful thinking about gear prices because I don't want to accept that my cherished speakers are worth less than a year ago? Possibly, but I'll deny it until the economy turns around!

There was a time when about 2 years ago when it would not have been a surprise to see all of them sell for 1425... and for less tha 600 bucks you would just get beater cabs....espeacially on ebay....

most used gear shops will tell you that buisness is booming...but it's their buisness thats booming...most of these guys will offer you half of what you could sell it for...then proceed to sell it for what you could have sold it for.

The downward spiral has been across all the Heritage line....

My purpose is to educate our s#@t house speculators who will respond to request for value estimates with ridiculously high values which only results in the requestor believing that the Heritage speaker he bought locally for X amount of dollars can be sold here on this forum for X times 3 or X times 4.

Since the ebay data is washed out every few weeks...it's good to have some snap shots in time to reference when realistic values are provided.

If the LaScala's in question are recent models with AL-4 xovers, composite k-401's and the associated other drivers then they are worth every bit of 1400 today...but two years ago AL-4 loaded speakers were selling for 2000+ dollars.....there have been a few recent model LaScala's with AL-4 xovers that have went unsold right here on this forum.

A worthwhile goal, and as I said I do appreciate your posts on the latest eBay prices.

The LaScala's in question have alnico K55Vs, ceramic K77Ms, metal horns, and AA crossovers. But I went back and looked at the auction in more detail, and they are a really nice pair, with factory grills and factory stained and lacquered cabinets in excellent condition. So my remark about them being "perfectly ordinary" was not accurate. That's probably why they brought some extra dough.
