Something sticky on my speaker. How to get it off

Must have come from the factory this way, but there is a small sticky patch of something on one of my RF-3II cones. Almost looks like clear surup or something. How can I get it off? Is it affecting anything?

it's probably not affecting anything.

due to the fragile nature of those cones, I wouldn't touch it, but if you really want to, I guess you could use some water or mild soap.

attempt at your own risk, the Ref woofers are known to dent super easily!

Again, thats seb. However it's not on my sub. It's stuck to a cone on one of my fronts.

The thought of putting water on one of my brand new babies just scares the crapola out of me. cwm6.gif.

Hi M00n.

I was just curious... what was there in Seb's post that made you think he was referring to your subwoofer?

Anyway, I'd strongly suggest calling 1-800-klipsch and talking to customer service before you try anything. If you start trying to remove the substance, and you damage one of the cones (dent it, or damage the surround with some chemical) you're going to put them in a difficult position regarding your warranty.

Hey Ray, seb had said

Thats all. cwm4.gif

Plus I am very new to all this and very paranoid that I will toast my speakers. I was just wanting to make sure that we were on the same track as far as which speaker we were talking about. For all I know it may be perfectly safe to do that to some speakers where you can't with others. Just being a cautios proud new papa.cwm35.gif

cautious is good!

however, I wasn't talking about the SUBwoofer, I was talking about the woofer on your speakers.

several main type of drivers:

subwoofer: usually powered, but not necessarily, those are standalone boxes with big drivers that are made to output SUB bass, hence their name, SUBwoofers.

woofer: the big driver on a speaker that outputs the bass.

sqawker, or midrange driver: smaller driver on the speaker that outputs the midrange, or upper midrange frequencies.

tweeter: in the case of Klipsch, horn-loaded, it's the very small driver that outputs the high frequencies.

the above assumes a three-way speaker and a sub. very often you'll see two-way speakers, where the woofer and the tweeter separate the work of the sqawker between themselves.

there are also speakers that use a more than three-way design. they are much more rare, and sometimes they will have a super-tweeter, or other drivers in between the woofer and tweeter. I don'T know of any other designation for drivers than the preceding subwoofer, woofer, sqawker, tweeter, and super tweeter. quite a menagerie!

hope it helps!

Hey thanks!cwm1.gif

Actually it does. Lets me know I need to distinguish between the subwoofer and a woofer on a regular speaker.

Is that silicon as in sand or microchips?cwm1.gif Ahhh, take great care here in electing your intended vernacular as the eggshells thou so lightly treads upon doth hew savagely.

I'm just thinking aloud here but to maintain that woofer's cleanliness you may want to keep Forresthumper away from it. You never know what that self proclaimed well-hung porn star's up to.cwm18.gif It helps you're at opposite ends of the country, but...there are lots of trees up in the Northwest and you never know when the Southern Oaks might be exhausted.

when my dad retired from the Baylor College of Medicine, they gave him a breast implant to use as a paper weight Smile.gif

Could it be like the tacky stuff that you find on like new TV's or pans and they normally have a label on them, you pull off the label and you still have this stream of sticky, just pull up one end and the whole strip comes up... i would call the dealer and see what they say.

Well I was referring to Silicon as in flexible urethane type compound. Often on items exposed to abrasion, expansion, and contraction.

Defer the Breast Implant usage to those with more hands on experience. cwm33.gif
