Klipsch Quartet Bob Crites

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am brand new on the forum, and this is my first post. I have a pair of Klipsch speakers (Quartets in Oak Oil finish). Due to all I have heard about the Bob Crites upgrades, I ordered his crossover rebuild kit and titanium tweeters. Do any of you guys have experience with installing these mods? Any help/pics/links would be greatly appreciated. I assume the crossover network is behind the speaker terminals on the Quartets?

I believe you will enjoy the mods. I did it to a set of my Q's with great results. The xover is indeed mounted to the termnial plate. I agree with Moray about the removal of the riser and some elevation. I currently running 3 pairs stacked on their sides in my 2 ch garage set up. Clean and concert levels if desired!

Thanks for the replies. I will see about getting the speakers off the risers and on some stands in the future. And I will continue to do research over on AudioKarma concerning the Crites upgrade installations. By the way, I am missing a Klipsch badge on one of the grills. Is ebay the best place to look for these?

Hey guys, just wanted to report back. I installed the new Sonicaps and titanium tweeters last night. The Sonicap capacitors were much larger than I had anticipated. It took some effort to get them all situated on the crossover board. Installing the titanium tweeters was as easy as loosening 3 nuts and dropping in place. Overall, it was not a bad job. It took just over an hour for me. Wow, what a difference!! I am ecstatic about the results. I honestly had no idea that these upgrades would do so much for the Quartets. My wife couldn't stand to listen to digital music on the Quartets prior. She sat in for a listen after I finished the upgrades and enjoyed them as much as I did. My wife seems to have a better ear than me, so I always appreciate her input. FYI, I am using a Dynaco ST-70 paired with a Sony 608ESD cd player....No preamp (using the variable outputs). So, I highly recommend Bob Crites upgrades for anyone on the fence. These speakers have taken on a much smoother, yet more detailed presentation than before. I moved my Spica Angelus out of the bedroom to listen to these!

Hello David..Welcome to the forum. Now you see why i i was looking for a second pair of Quartets!.Money well spent for the crites. Keep in mind there is a "aprox 20 hour".. burn in time for the sonicaps so you should expect even more for your effort. I plan to do my kg5.5s next then eventually the chorus,s..By the way ,what do you plan to hook the pioneer receiver to? also ,how bout some pics of your mcintosh gear!

Pat...I have heard people talk about burn-in time for capacitors and didn't know whether there was much truth to it. Thanks for mentioning that; I'll be listening for a change in sound. I'll bet both those kg5.5's and the Chorus's will sound great with the upgrades too!

I still have yet to hear back from the guys about my Pioneer SX-1500t. When it finally returns home, it will probably drive an old pair of EPI 201 speakers I have in storage. I used to drive these with a Marantz 2230, but I sold it a few months ago and gave the EPI's a rest. I actually ordered some Sonicaps from Bob Crites today for the EPI's crossovers. I've experienced such a difference with the Quartets that I wanted to recap my old EPI's as well. They were made in the early 70's, so its definitely time to change out the original caps haha!

You wanted some pics of my McIntosh gear... you got it :-)

These days I am all digital, but back when I was doing analog between components I tried what your are doing using the variable outputs, and to my ear at least I preferred the direct outputs used with an external switched attenuator.
