Can I build Something Decent Out of This?

Broke down a Pilot console a few months ago for the amp, but held onto these Jensen speakers, 10" woofers, 3" tweets. 12"by 14" motorboard (?), ie the thing the drivers are attached to. Classic old speaker cloth. I presume the woofs are full-range.

So what kind of a box, and what rough dimensions would I need to have them sounding decent. Budget's pretty much non-existent so were not talking xovers, veneer etc.

Can't sell them for anything so might as well build something. Plus, it's about time you guys wrapped yourselves a non-Klipsch project.

What say ye?

Unless I am mistaken, the system was designed, crossover and all, to be in an unsealed enclosure. For that reason, I think beeker is right with a baffle speaker. It would be easy to see if it sounds OK before you start cutting etc. Just lean the motorboard against something and see how it sounds. Since you have the original amp, it would be a nice match for the baffle speakers like daddy dee mentioned. I would agree that a folded design would be a great experiment, but you would have to build a crossover and attenuate the tweeter down a bit, as the fold would amplify the woofer.

Thanks guys, especially Beeker. I have to learn a bit more about open baffle designs. I saw one at a guys home once. It was speakers mounted to a big sheet of cardboard. The sound had overtones of brown paper bags to me, more pressed wood than Norwegian wood. But it's been awhile, so I could be mistaken.

It is indeed correct that these speakers were not in a sealed enclose within the console. The back was heavily perforated with ventilation holes

That;'s why I was thinking maybe some sort of of box with maybe some muslin or other type of cotton cloth stapled loosely over the back.

I dunno. Still mulling it over, but am happy that now I've discovered a whole new aspect of this hobby. Speaker building.

One can only hope it involves the release of magic smoke, just like very other effort I've undertaken in the realm of electronics.

Common Boxx. Its worth a shot. Heck it wont take much time or work to try considering what he has...

Considering the open console then a 2 way baffle for stereo speakers would work good I would believe. Using low efficient watts in some particular baffles is a strength in an open baffle. I also do not fully understand the open baffle concept although your speaker appear to be of at least average quality and it would be worth a shot.

Basically the motor board that the 2 speakers mount to are in an open air enclosure(no surrounding) with a simple stand holding the motorboard up. Years ago i remeber the open air subwoofer that you could buy and simply wire up and they would put descent bass out with no mounting whatsoever. The woofer would just sit on the magnet and some would actually sound rather well. I believe i still have a pair of old 8" open air subwoofers...

what thee now say?
