Soundthought
Hello all. I finally got around to pulling out the two mid-bass woofs in my RF7s. I got to send them in for replacement. I'm gonna miss those little bastards. (sigh) Anyway, I had pulled the screws out and was attemting to remove the drivers. I tried this and that. They wouldn't budge. I finally had to set the speakers upright and sort of let them drop out. Not cool. They weren't glued on, there was no hidden screws, they were just freaking heavy. Stuck in place by their own weight. Talk about mass. These magnets are huge for this size driver. I'm impressed. They weigh in at 15lbs apiece. A serious chunk of speaker! tpg
The magnets weigh something like 90 ounces a piece, I think. There are pictures of the driver on the Klipsch website somewhere.... ------------------ For ProMedia help:s> Email ProMedia Tech Support or call at: 1-888-554-5665s>
Deang
Wait until you have pull a tweeter out. Whatever you do, don't drop it on your foot.
kenratboy
Yep, heavy is good, unless you are a rodie! Even on my JBL HLS610's, the woofer (a 6.5") motor structure is HUGE! It is almost the diameter of the woofer itself! My JBL 15" subwoofer (pro stuff) woofers weigh 20 pounds, and it is all expensive metal. I hate POS 15" woofers with 1.25" voice coils and motor assembelies the size of a hocky puck! Why bother! ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come. KLIPSCH soon! My computer is better than my stereo!
Soundthought
Deang, I was poking my head around (literally) inside my RF7s. Man, you aren't kidding. The motors on the tweets look meaty. Their damn near as big as the woofer motors. I got a decent EQ now, so hopefully no more amp clipping and no more speaker replacement.LOL. Kenratboy, I agree. Leave the little motors for fridge magnets. I bought those new $100 a pair Jensen 15s' for my basement. Talk about you get what you pay for. They make better plant stands than they do loudspeakers. Small motors mean small performance. I still love to beat the sh** out of those Jensens. Just for kicks to see if I can rupture a cone or suspension. Haven't done it yet though. Hmmm. Maybe if I plug them into my guitar amp somehow. Screeech Keeeerpow.
lynnm
quote: I got a decent EQ now, so hopefully no more amp clipping and no more speaker replacement.LOL. Think again mi amigo!! Equalisers are - if anything a greater danger to voice coils than amplifier clipping because they allow the user to set the power levels in certain frequency ranges to an unusually high level and then maintain that setting indefinitely. I have no problem with the use of ordinary tone controls but equalisers can be hazardous to your voice coils unless you have proper measuring equipment - and actually KNOW what the HELLO you are doing. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca.1900) This message has been edited by lynnm on 07-23-2002 at 10:32 PM
boa12
whoops wrong section. i thought this was another "gremlins" sequel. btw, i think the mag & structure on the velo hgs-18 weighs in around 24 lbs. wonder how much the woofs w/ magnet/assembly on the klf-30 weigh? ------------------ My Home Systems Page This message has been edited by boa12 on 07-23-2002 at 10:40 PM
Soundthought
I agree with you lynnm. If not used properly, an equilizer can easily drive an amp to clip and speakers to fry. I, fortunately, know how to use one. Fact is I bought an Audiocontrol C-101 series3. It comes with a Tchebychev subsonic filter, a built in pink noise generator with adjustable output level, A calibrated lab grade mic and a list of other features. It is a decent, solid EQ. I'm pushing for a bit flatter response. I'm trimming everthing below 120Hz and above 4K to tame some room problems. It is doing the trick nicely. But thank you for your insight. People should be aware of the dangers involved in using one. Especially since the recent re-appearance of them on the mainsteam market. IMO-I say set it and forget it. As far as motor weight on klf-30s, I dont know but i'll bet they're huge. I would like to know how big the motors are in the Khorns or the La Scalas. Monsterous, i'll bet. kenratboy
H#ll NO!!! If you want to pop a speaker in style, plug it into the wall... Thats why soem 5-way binding posts have those (drillable - removable) plastic covers over the banana plug inputs, the Euro power cords will plug into the speaker! ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come. Soundthought
No doubt. I was thinking of running jumpers off my old Miller arc welder. Just to see them glow. This guy I know told me he used to plug his old kenwoods into the wall socket. To test for power fluctuations. LOLx2 He said it made some crazy humming sounds. Really...Huh...no kidding? He's a dipsh** anyway, but that's just nuts. But it does kinda sound like fun. Hmmm..Where are those Smose dual cube bookends anyhow? I think it's playtime. kenratboy
I wonder what would happen? Would it just blow your bearkers? Would the speaker sit and smolder and spark? Try it at a friends house, let them take the bad smells! ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come. TheEAR
Yep the RF-7's magnetic structures are no BS,I saw them when I had to remove my binding post/crossover after one binding post went loose after I removed Monster Cable M2.4B's. Damn no trash these RF-7 woofers, and the tweeter also has a serious magnetic structure. Boa you are correct, the HGS18 has a 24lbs magnetic structure.I did open the back plate/amp and the magnetic structure is huge. The Aerial also has a mig mutha magnet, around 30lbs! However the most impressive magnet/size of driver is on the SUnfire Mark II/IV!This 8" driver has titanic 14lbs magnet/30lbs magnetic structure!Same magnet the SUnfire Sig uses. BURP Just dont put your TV near it or the coloration will change and fast. Last time I added all the magnets in my subs/speakers I had over 200lbs worth of magnetic monstrosity! Not magnetic structure here, but magnets!! I am the king of magnets! kenratboy
EAR, do you have signs outside your house alerting people with pacemakers to go across the street? ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come. Soundthought
I don't know how many pounds in magnets I have but I've got 36 pairs of speakers. Talk about whole house magnetic therapy. Come to think of it, since i got my 7.2 Reference set-up, my arthritis has mysteriously vanished. Poof...Gone.. What a trip. Probably more due to this later stage of speaker addiction i'm experiencing. They say the head and nerves are first to go. Oh Sh**, here it comes again. I can't help myself! Gotta have my speaker fix!
