We only had 5 channels, the speakers being placed next to the listener position reflected sound off the front and back walls, and the SIDES as well, which gave a very diffuse surround field. Doesn't seem like that would work very well... They are dipoles if I'm not mistaken. THX required that surround speakers be dipoles back in the early and mid '90's.
