RI craigslist "Klipschorns"

There's nothing wrong with Speakerlab K's, is there?  Six hundred bucks for some large K's, a center and some KG-4's sounds at least usable, but I'm no authority.

Still, the seller is calling them "Klipschorns."  Are they copies, are they the real thing, or is the seller being deceptive?

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that there's anything wrong with a Speakerlab K. I actually own a pair of homebrew khorn clones, they get daily play time and are not for sale.

There's a certain kind of CL ad, describing any moldy old homebrew speaker that happens to have a triangular cross-section as a "Klipschorn". If these are Speakerlabs built under license from Klipsch, this ad would be the mildest example of the form. :)

I was actually the first person to call the guy. He said he was selling the speakers for his father-in-law. He said he had all of the original paperwork with the receipts from the 80s showing they were originally purchased for $6000ish. I told him I was very interested in checking them out to buy. He told me he would have his father-in-law call me back from he got out of church. I called him back a couple of hours, and they were sold. Apparently he called the wrong person first. It makes me feel better that you guys don't think they were original klipschorns.

I just got a second chance on these. Everything is still there, do I do it? They are kits from speakerlab from the 70s. He bought them from the factory and built then himself. The caps have been replaced semi recently. He seems like he know his stuff, especially with the caps and resistors. What do I do?

If you have the $600 it sounds like a safe buy.  With 5 speakers included that is $120 per speaker.  I would think you easily recoup your investment if the sound is not to your liking.

Regarding the Speakerlab K's, I agree with others.  From the quick research on the reviews on-line it looks like the SPLab-K's can sound pretty good to pretty OK depending on the components.

For six bills I would not negotiate trying to get down to five, unless you like that part of the process or it that's your "I really don't want these" price.  I would pay the asking price and be off to your next audio adventure.
