Dustin B
Depends on the room. Keep in mind that with LFE and the other 5 channels <80hz material a sub technically needs to be capable of over 120dB peaks all the way down to 20hz at the listening position for true reference level. Now few movies require this at 20hz and only a few more have peaks of this magnitude in the sound track anywhere. If you haven't seen this round up before it shows maximum output measurements in a 3600ft^3 room from 12feet away of various sub setups. http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8_4/subwoofers-12-2001.html
Kain
Thanks. Lets say that the room size is around 14 feet by 14 feet. ------------------ Coming soon... Dustin B
I'm assuming 8' ceilings. So that would be 1500ft^3. In a room that size a single Ultra will more than likely be plenty. You'll have to ask TomV if it will be capable of true reference in a room that size though. I imagine it could come damn close if not get there though. Also square rooms are pretty bad for bass. Your length and width modes will be identical and double up on you. You'll have a major spike around 40hz in that room.
Kain
Actually, we have 10 feet ceilings. ------------------ Coming soon... TheEAR
Kain, The answer to your question is NO Probably, maybe will not produce 120dB at 20Hz.I had two Ultras on a Carver TFM75 power amp(1000W RMS into 4 Ohms, per channel!its a dual mono mini monster)and I did not get 120dB at 20Hz at listening position(in a 14*10 room with a 6.5ft celling and an opening into another 14*10*6.5high). At 31.5Hz reference levels are not a problem for most heavy duty high output subs, but 20Hz is another animal. The only 1 unit sub capable of around 120dB at 20Hz is the Krell MRS,the price however is a bit less good. You would need two SVS Ultra subs with at least a 400W per channel amp, then the reference level is mighty close thank you. jonesey
No way in hell that a single Ultra is going to achieve reference levels of bass. Dustin B certainly does seem infatuated with SVS though (do you even own an SVS? you post more about SVS than Tom Vodhanel)
Mike Lindsey
Here's Jonesy again spouting off remarks without backing up what he says with one single piece of evidence. Please enlighten us with your vast knowledge of Subwoofers... Mike
