Just gotta know when to say when. I have a pair of <ahem> Polk SDA SRS that are rated to 1000 watts. I can’t even imagine it. 220 is more than enough.

Check these out.  I keep seeing them in So Cal.

I am driving a pair of JBl 250 ti with 20 wpc of pure Class A.  They sound great but are suppose to need 400 wpc.  I have a few amps to try but have not gotten around to it yet.

Same config as the first ones. Bass into the teens and amazing soundstage. Powered by Kenwood M2A. Now my Chorus are powered with a ChiFi class A at 15 watts. I rarely go past 2/3 volume. Still amazing sound.

It depends on whether you're worried about killing the speakers, or the amp.

If the amp, unless you drive the amp to clipping, it's not an issue.

If you blow a speaker well then, you had too much power available!

Why not fuse your speakers to save all worry?

If I did the math right, and assuming the speakers are 8 ohms, a 4 or 5A fast blow fuse should do the trick. You could start even lower say, a 3A fuse to observe what volume the fuse blows at, and adjust from there.

And the first person that tells me the fuse will alter the sound is gonna steer this thread off a cliff! 😀

Be careful with too much power.  Most amps are not as beefy as they claim, so if you get an amp that is way above the power rating of your speakers and can actually put out the power you can do some damage.

I saw this with a pair of Classe monoblocks that are 700 wpc at 4 ohms and can actually put out that much power. They distorted the woofers on some inefficient but expensive speakers.  All four woofers had to be replaced at a big cost.

Just how high was the volume when this happened?  Didn’t something sound a bit off before the woofers started warping?
