itchywoods
My Home Theater Master SL-9000 is going bad and rather than just get another one I thought I would pole the group. What's the best and why? Thanks
dougdrake
You're probably going to see a barage of responses crying "Pronto!" by Philips. I recently acquired one, and it is terrific. You have virtually complete programming capability (via the pc-based ProntoEdit program), with the ability to create long macros if you want, put channel logos and other bitmaps on the touchscreen, and customize every button (and create any kind of button you want via the touchscreen). Plus, the whole thing is backlight. I love it!
matt_a
I agree about the pronto. I just purchased one myself. Check out http://www.remotecentral.com./ Good site with lots of info and pronto fanatics.

4977
If you can find a Marantz RC2000 MKII take a look at it. I like it because it is not a touch screen remote. I am sure that the Pronto is a great remote but the Marantz is a little cheaper and very good also. Just my 2 cents. Good Luck
RossVTaylor
Dear Itchy, Take a look at these older threads on universal remote controls: http://www.klipsch.com/ubb/Forum9/HTML/000704.html http://www.klipsch.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/001218.html Ross
BTW
Go with the pronto, I had the Marantz RC2000 and it is nice being able tolabel a button with the full name not just 4 letters.
Foost
i believe cnet.com also has excellent reiviews on the subject. I also think they prefer the pronto.
MBM135
Agree. Pronto looks awesome. I can't get my A/V receiver to recognize my DVD player. Wrong codes or something. Only problem with pronto is that I could go buy a new DVD player that is the same brand as my rcvr for less than a Pronto. Great remote but a bit steep on the price. Probably worth it though if you have a lot of mixed components. MM
dougdrake
I think the real strength of the Pronto lies not in its ability to consolidate a bunch of remotes into one, but in its ability to be almost totally programmed any way you want it. It has allowed me to put just a few touchscreen buttons on the main screen that will, with one touch, turn on all the appropriate components for watching a DVD (or the VCR) and dim the lights. I can also put pictures (bitmaps) of my favorite radio/TV stations for easy access. The buttons can be made to say anything you want them to, so you don't have to wonder what a certain button does when you are in TV mode versus what it does in VCR mode. In short, it allows you to simplify operation of your HT for yourself, and other loved ones who might otherwise divorce you (kidding about the divorce part). RossVTaylor
Doug, Spoken like a true Pronto convert! Welcome to the bandwagon Ross
JoshT
This may be a stupid question, but can you use the pronto for two systems? In other words, can I set it up for both my HT system in the living room and my two channel only system in the bedroom, and then just carry it back and forth? After all, I'm never listening to both at the same time! Oh, and how big is this thing?
RossVTaylor
Josh, YES! You can set it up with custom pages for each, and every, room/system in your home. You can even put in a floorplan of your home and set it up so that pressing on a room takes you to the control pages for that room... very cool, indeed! A Pronto is about the size of a Mindspring organizer, but thicker (like two stacked). Ross
dougdrake
Nothing more annoying than a recent convert, huh? Definition of an expert -- the one who most recently went to class. BTW, Ross, thanks for the ccf you sent which got me started on all that!! Doug
Steve Phillips
I want my Prontos> Sorry didn't mean to shout. Please forgive me! That's the one for me.
DTune1981
Can someone please tell me how I can find out if the Pronto TSU2000 can replace a brand specific remote? I need one for my HT setup, and I need to replace one for a Spectrum LED wallboard sign. It would be nice if the Pronto would do it. Thanks
dougdrake
DTune - I take it you don't have an existing remote for the sign that the Pronto could learn from, right? (Wow, a sign with a remote control?? What would the remote do besides just turn it on and off?). You could search the forums/files at www.remotecentral.com under the Pronto section and see if anyone knows anything about that. Often, owners will post the IR codes for devices they have loaded into the Pronto.
DTune1981
Thanks for the imfo. The " remote from hell" has a qtry on it so it can directly inter the color, scroll patterns, graphics, text, and change what is displayed at what times. I rather use a remote than hook it to the PC, and have it auto update from database.
