digjr
I have seen alot of discussion on the Academy lately and have been asked about building a few. I got some prices from Klipsch for the components. K-1011-KV woofer - $110.13 each, K-76-K tweeter - $45.32, Academy Network - $41.41. That brings the total to $306.99 but does not include shipping. I would use 1/2" mdf covered with birch or oak veneer (I don't care for paper) and stained to match the buyers setup. Grille cloth would be black. This is not going to be a mass production job, I would build one or two at a time. Ballpark price would be $450.00 - $500.00 for a clone with all new components. Please email if you have any interest. A great member of this forum pointed out that I needed to finish explaining the total thickness of the cabinet. The idea was to use 1/2" mdf followed by 1/4" birch or oak bringing the thickness to 3/4". And to use 3/4" mdf for the bottom as well as the back panel. It may also help to identify myself as the guy that made the Baby Belle and the 12" cornerhorn. Sorry for the oversight folks and thanks for the interest! formica
Have you considered building a "heresy" based one... using the K77 and K55... and matching a custom set of woofers? I've considered the design... using all the original components except replacing the one woofer with 2 EV 8" woofers wired in series in a ported box. It seems to model about the same, but the x-over should be given a look over by one of the gurus. Just thought I'd through it one the table... I'm kinda surprised there hasn't been more response than this so far as it'll definitely be cheaper than eBaying one. For those who haven't read / seen don's handiwork... you should check out the mini-belle and 12" Khorn he built (posted mostly to Odds and Mods). later... rob

SCOOTERDOG
Here is the one I built. It is a bit higher end and sounds much better then the acadamy. It ended up costing me about $400.00 to build. I would highly recommend the diy approach if your have the tools and patients.
digjr
Thank you guys for the info and replies. All this talk about the Academy! If people are trying to find a center for the heritage line I think they should be using something with a K-55 as a midrange since a good share of the dialog starts there. When I first started with HT I had an RC3 as a center, it truly did not match the Khorn components. I then built a center using a Belle bottom as the TV stand, a Selenium HC-25 horn with a Layne audio K-55 replacement and a Selenium tweeter above the TV. The tweeter is definitely not a K-77 but when the same sound (car, airplane, voices, etc) cross the front three speakers it is seamless. Therefore the midrange is the most important choice for matching the rest of the system. Even after replacing the Khorns with the 12" version (they do include the original K-55's and K-77's) it is still seamless. Of course this is only my opinion but for those interested in a center match for the heritage line you might want to consider including a K-55. Thanks, Don

Frzninvt
Hey Smilin, you may want to email Don directly I am sure he could help you out if he has the time on his hands to undertake the project.
texas42
I'm currently using a pair of Heresy I's as my center with my 1979 Cornwalls. Provides a seamless match as the mids and tweets are the same. It is quite large however (both on top of a 65" Mits HDTV) and I'd prefer a dedicated center but agree that the K-55 and K-77s would be the way to go, at least for heritage speakers. Anything would be better than the overly inflated prices for a 10 year old Academy though...Good luck with your project, I'm sure it will be nice. I am not on my home computer, but if you search my handle and picture you should be able to see where I posted what it looked like and the specifics of my design. I think a true hertitage center has a market - I was able to compare the sound (at my ear only) of an academy and my modified heresy - for my ear, the heresy mod was better (by a good deal) on what i can best describe as a seamless match to my front soundstage.
