Paczkis (punch-keys or poonch-keys) jelly donuts are a huge annual Polish tradition here in Detroit with fillings such as prune, raspberry, strawberry, lemon, custard, apple and blueberry. Every year on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, Polish Bakeries in the town of Hamtramck turn out literally ten of thousands of these plump jelly donuts. About $10 million dollars worth are sold around Fat Tuesday each year in Michigan. Obviously, places other than the genuine Polish bakeries make them too, but they are just not the same. Paczki means: "little package" in Polish. One Paczki is actually called a paczek (poon-check). Two or more are paczki. One cake is about 420 calories, 20 grams of fat, 40 grams of carbs and 30 milligrams of cholestrol (they're fried in lard). Is it any wonder Detroit is the fattest city in the U.S.? I mean what do the Irish care about the Poles, we didn't even know them over across the water. Nope, being anti-Polish is a poison the Germans brought over with them. I think the reason many people do not care for the Krispy Kremes may be because they use vegetable oil instead of lard when frying the cakes and that makes them taste different. I dunno for sure. But, there's no discounting that they are quite popular in various areas of the country. I prefer the lard-laced variety, myself. BTW: Great Polack joke! Thanks. BBB: Eminem would be proud!
