Favorite low bass CDs??

Recommended Posts

Now that I have my VMPS larger subwoofer integrated with my Chorus speakers, I would love to know what your favorite CDs are that have low bass information.

Symphonic Star Trek and Great Fantesy Adventure Album, on Telarc. When Telarc has low bass, there is a warning on the label. Seek it out.

I also like The Songs of West Side Story on RCA, but it is just music.

The original Techmaster P.E.B. CD should task your speakers nicely, it's a full digital recording. Lots of low bass at different frequencies and speeds, try it you'll like it. Exercise Caution! cwm1.gif

the Saint-Saëns "Organ Symphony" - aka Symphony #3 - just about any recording. The Phillips version, recorded at Davies Hall in San Francisco, is the one with the deepest bass - sub 16 cycles at some points - but it seems to be out of print.

Pearl Jam - No Code - cut #3, "Who You Are"

Peter Gabriel - Security - cut #6, "Lay Your Hands on Me"

Eagles - Hell Freezes Over - bunches of cuts, particularly "Hotel California"

Telarc, William Tell & Other Favorite Overtures, Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Release# CD-80116, last cut, the "William Tell Overture" (aka the Lone Ranger theme...) (AWESUM!!!)

others to follow...

don't know what your tastes are, but mine cover the full range (except country Smile.gif)

King's X "Dogman" CD is one of the bassiest hard rock albums on earth...

also check out their "Ear Candy" album.

Some great R&B bass comes from Seal, Sade, and, especially,

P.M. Dawn - all albums from these 3 groups.

Lowdown, gnarly bass can be found on Bela Fleck and the Flecktone's "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo" (seriously), from the CD of the same name.

Also in the jazz vein, check out Holly Coles "Temptation" CD for some really strong deep bass.

If rock is more your speed, Fleetwood Macs' "Tusk" has some well recorded bass guitar.

Some of the best recorded electric bass I've heard lately can be found on Kathy Matteas' "The Innocent Years" CD. Nothing overpowering, but just real strong and clean.

Oh yeah, I can't leave out "The Mix", by Kraftwerk. It'll absolutely rattle your teeth with your set-up.

Geez, where to stop? Enjoy!

Thanks everybody for the list so far. Here is my contribution:

- Bboom, Thrak, King Crimson

- Anything from Depeche Mode

- Lady Marmalade, Moulin Rouge soundtrack

- Anything from Tool

- 1812 Overture, Telarc, cannon shots

Actually, I have been amazed at the amount of low bass information in most of my music, CD or cassette tape (Nakamichi ZX-7). It's like getting a whole new collection!

BTW, I am running the (1) VMPS Larger with the 2 passive crossovers, one crossover for each active carbon driver. I have my Chorus speakers connected to the high pass (90hz) from the crossover and the mains level potentiometer turned down all the way (-4dB cut).

I actually have found the level match between the VMPS and the Chorus speakers to be about right. My Adcom GFA-535 can hit about 102dB (at the listening position) on bass rich music before clipping. This is loud enough for me.

Some day I will try biamping and an electronic crossover, but I am extremely happy with the system as it stands now.

Here's two CD's that I used to audition the Reference set I have now:

Johann Sebastian Bach: Great Organ Works (Laserlight)

It has all the pipe organ music to test all the frequencies, but especially the lower frequencies, as it does have lows that go down to 15hz!! This will really tax your subwoofer to the max.

The CD is somewhat hard to find, so here's a link at Amazon.com:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000001VPS/qid%3D99523 4255/sr%3D1-59/ref%3Dsc%5Fm%5F59/002-7578473-3394418

My second CD is a personal favorite:

Crime of the Century, Supertramp

Lots of good music all around, and loads of musical bass throughout every track.

Best bet is to listen to them on your existing system, then give 'em a tryout on a pair of Klipsch. You'll be amazed (as I was) of the great sound Klipsch delivers.

I find alot of the electronic music that I listen to has alot of low bass...bands like:

Nine Inch Nails

Crystal Method

Chemical Brothers

Prodigy

But if you were refering to good bass playing...I'd have to second boa's reccomendation of Primus...Les Claypool has got to be one of the finest bass players I've ever heard!

stcaldwell, I'm aware of that. That comment was directed mostly to other potential Klipsch fans, not necessarily yourself.

Of course, when you go without sleep for 36+ hours (as I did when I posted that), the thought processes and the communication skills lose their razor edge. Smile.gif

The first "Wishbone Ash" album which is available on CD.

Nothing really pounding but very tasteful and clean and lots of it. There's something on that album for almost any taste. Some fantastic blues,a little jazz and scatin and good old progressive rock. A great album!!

Phenomenal bass playing and there's even a bass solo.

I seen someone mentioned Kings X. There one of my favorites.

Yeah, I'm in agreement with STC.

I heard Lady Marmalade, Moulin Rouge soundtrack on the headphones at Virgin. A next buy. Gotta see the movie.

I'm in the same camp with Ray on the Organ Symphony. Wonderful.

I'm a bit jaded that any modern musician can exploit the effect, but it adds little to their craft.

On the other hand, the masters were bass freaks too, taking advantage of large organs. They do it well.
