Passive Sub Amp/Crossover ?

This is not for a ht.

The NAD amp I bought for my sub(custom isabaric 2 x 12' peerless drivers - specs below) was very ugly and dead on arival so I am starting from scratch again so I am going to just buy a new one. All the talk about the Cain Abbeys got me look ing at their site where I found the bailey sub http://www.cain-cain.com/bailey/index.html which looks beautiful and I noticed the plate amp/crossover on it after an email or two i learned that it was a Keiga 5250 http://www.madisound.com/kgamps.html . I figure if it is good enough for cain it is good enough for me and will not break the bank. My only concern is that the baily may be more efficient than my sub but I could be wrong. I was look ing at the 5250 which is 4 ohms 600W and the 5230 which is 4 Ohms 300W of course I figure the more power the beter for solid state sub amp. I looked at some plate amps on partsexpress but the price on these seemed better on these and the fact that cain used them was a plus for me. This is going to be used to hit 80 cycles down to 18 cycles lol my current setup is 300b set monoblocks, george wright preamp and belle's. The preamp has a second set of outputs for subwoofer.

any advice appreciated thanks again

PEERLESS 830500 XLS 12" SUBWOOFER

By introducing the new Extra Long Stroke (XLS) series, Peerless has pushed the performance limits for subwoofers. Whether it's for an active home theatre subwoofer or for audiophile applications, XLS subwoofers will fulfill every demand for deep clean bass reproduction.

The design emphasis has been put in achieving extreme deep bass, long time reliability, high power handling, and very low-distortion. All XLS subwoofers feature large full roll rubber surrounds, nomex fiber impregnated cones and aluminum shorting rings for low distortion. Peerless has also designed matching "passive radiators" for use with their active subwoofers to enhance their performance. In the recommended 1.48 cu. ft. enclosure with the 12" XLS 425 Passive Radiator, the resulting bass response extends to an F3 of 20 Hz!

* Power handling: 300 watts RMS/425 watts max * Voice coil diameter: 2" * Voice coil inductance: 4.2 mH * Nominal Impedance: 8 ohms * DC resistance: 3.5 ohms * Frequency response: 18.1-500 Hz * Fs: 18.1 Hz * SPL: 90.6 dB 2.83V/1m * Vas: 4.92 cu. ft. * Qms: 3.7 * Qes: .21 * Qts: .20 * Xmax: 12.5mm * Net weight: 14.6 lbs. * Dimensions: Overall Diameter: 12", Cutout Diameter: 11", Mounting Depth: 5-1/4", Magnet Diameter: 5-3/4".

You could also use a DBX 120X-DS Electronic Crossover/Subhamonic Synthesizer it has a continuously variable crossver from 50-210Hz and can be used to bi amp a system as well. You also have the benefit of the Subharmonic Synthesizer that can recover lost/weak bass information in the 28-55Hz range and add it back into the signal to your liking. Very versatile unit. You also have tweekable adjustments in the 28, 34, 40, and 50Hz ranges. Very cool!

Another option is the AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator (PCA) like an Epicenter for the house, or the Richter Scale I believe they both can perform as electronic crossover but the cutoff frequencies are fixed and you need to get other chips to change the frequency which is a pain!

In an Isobaric configuration, those drivers will probably be thermally (power) limited throughout most of the audible range. Base on that, I'd say you'll want to stick to a 600W amp (2x drivers at 300W).

Look at the Adire Audio ADA series of plate amps. I recently purcahsed the ADA1200 and have been working it hard for the last few months. Much better build quality than the offerings of Madisound and Partsexpress.

Adire is simply working to a lower margin and the customer wins big.

Customer service is excellent too, 5 star rating.

Thanks for all the advice!

I have only heard my sub once and that was when i bought it and it was interesting. It was not a home theatre boomy bass which I was happy about. I have taken so much care with the rest of my system I don't want the sub to be a hinderence or weak link. I just want a little more bottom end bass for music but down to 18 cycles will probably be felt not heard lol.

Very interesting hadn't thought of that a friend has a DBX. Hmm now I have more options than before lol. I don't want to muck up my bass too much but how important is amp quality when it comes to bass or how different are ss amps going to sound. A friend told me for bass that spending money on a high quality bass amp would be a complete waste and that as long as it was powerful most would sound the same but I do not know if that is true or if I believe it. What do you,ll think about that?
