delano
Good Evening, I was wondering if you guys could help me decide if it is worth changing the Ortofon om -5e cartridge on my Thorens Td145 to a Grado Black or Red. Will I hear a difference? Is it worth the money? The Ortofon is still in good shape with not too many hours. Thanks all Delano
crazytubepower
Well I am not sure how much better it will be, but I am a fan of the grado sound.
edwinr
I like the Grado sound as well. Your Ortofon is pretty much the entry level model, but is still an okay cartridge. You could upgrade your Ortofon to OM-10 standard simply by replacing the stylus. But if I was you I would I would bite the bullet and go Grado. The more you spend on the Grado, the better profile stylus you get.
Mark Hardy
Well, they sound quite a bit different. The Ortofon will be a bit cool and analytical compared to rich warmth from the Grado. They are both good cartridges, although neither is exactly noted for its superior tracking ability. The Grado has a few eccentricities (some sensitivity to hum on certain tables, and "the Grado dance" in some arms) but they're pretty versatile IMNSHO. I've owned several Grados over the years (and still do). The only Ortofons I have are foundlings.
fini
I was going the mention the Grado dance as well. My current Ortofon (from jnorv) is very well-behaved.
Dflip
I was told yesterday that Grado was not a good mate for Rega turntables due to the hum that is produced. The hum is more noticeable the closer you get to the end of the record. The owner did not mention that it was a problem with Thorens. Allan Songer
Even worse with a Thorens.
