Concert veterans unite!

After reading another thread that mentioned concerts, it make me think back to all the concerts I'd seen as a kid -- and after. I think the rockers define part of their childhood and teenagerhood by the concerts they saw and who they were with and the "enhancements" they used.

I was on the concert committee at Auburn for a couple years--head usher for a year. Lots of great times at the foot of the stage for Hall and Oates, Mother's Finest, The Eagles, Heart, Sea Level, Pat Travers, Charlie Daniels, and even Wayne Newton with Barbara Mandrell.

Otherwise, I saw Aerosmith(sounded like crap), Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, U2, Police, the Fixx, The Cars, Mahogany Rush, James Taylor, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jethro Tull, George Thoroughgood, Pearl Jam, Yes, Kansas, Kiss, Steely Dan, Van Morrison, Stone Temple Pilots in the Family Values Tour, and alot of others I can't remember. I've seen Pat Metheny three times, and Elton John three times.

And, my first concert was,,, Seals and Crofts. The latest concert was Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise

So if you like list the concerts you saw and the first and last one you saw--

Gentlemen and ladies, start your air guitars....

One of my first shows was Rush with Primus. The ones I like best are the smaller venue shows like VNV Nation and Apoptygma Berzerk at the Metro in Chicago, 16 Horsepower at Scuba's in Chicago, Savage Aural Hotbed at The Warehouse in LaCrosse, Dave Weld & The Imperial Flames at the Silver Moon in Darien.

My two Big Show exceptions to this rule were the first Ozzfest where he played with Black Sabbath for a few songs, and NIN with David Bowie at the New World Music Theater in Chicago.

A great thread for dating ourselves. My golden age of concert

going was in early 70s, when I saw (within 2-3 years): Rolling Stones

(Stevie Wonder was opening act), The Who, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Led

Zeppelin, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Allman Bros, Rod Stewart (when he

was good), Free (All Right now...), Quicksilver, and many others I

cannot remember. My very first concert was Mountain (Mississippi

Queen).

What is also great to remember was that they were all either $4, $5, or $6 admission!

"What's that sonny? $50 for the current Rolling Stones tour...why back in my day..."

My first concert was Mountain also. They opened for Kiss, along with Mott The Hoople. 1974 I think. Chicago Amphitheater.

Saw the Stones in 1981? TERRIBLE concert, IMO

Rush, The Runaways, Foghat, Aerosmith, Nugent, Nazareth, Sammy Hagar, Ozzy, Motorhead, Santana, Robin Trower (awesome) Judas Priest, and like most..many others that seem to have slipped my mind[:o]

Is that the face price of tickets? It shows how long it's been since I

went to a major concert. I cannot imagine spending $250 for 3 hours of

music, especially in what's often a sonically-questionable venue.

That's a lot of CDs and DVDs. But, if ya gotta see-um live...[:D]

First concert I ever saw was the Beatles in 1965 and the last one I went to was I think Mark Knopfler in 2002. I just don't like the hassle any more.

I have seen the Stones 5 times. The first time was in the summer of 72 (Stevie Wonder opened) and the last time was the Steel Wheels tour. I know in 72 the tickets couldn't have been more than $20. The problem with seeing the Stones now is it's not a concert, it's an event. It seems like too many talk through the show and not listen to the music. It's more to be seen and not see the show.

Also what killed it for me was I heard a comic talking about Mick Jagger and he said Jagger looks like Barney Fife in spandex.

In 1972 I saw John Mclaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra on the same bill with Jeff Beck.

Jeff Beck was playing all his "Blow by Blow" which was just out.

e645003tfcr.jpgd84146auw19.jpg

THAT was a fabulous night.

I was just at the Newport Jazz Festival both days and Medeski Martin and Wood were fabulous, but so was Joshua Redman, Dave Holland and his big band, Patrica Barber, Wyton, and Mccoy Tyner!

I was at a Steve Miller concert a year or two ago and Steve Miller blew me away, he was fabulous. Warrne Haynes was opening act with Govt Mule and then Steve Miller asked Warren to play a blues set at a break in his act.. Steve and Warren traded blues licks for an hour and it was EXCELLENT!

I've seen Bruce Cockburn a few times live and he is a worth while performer to see. He plays beautifully and sings from the heart.

Saw Crosby Stills and Nash a couple years ago in Boston and they were fabulous.. then saw them the next year with Neil Young with them.. no so good.. Neil Young is such a powerful performer it just becomes "the Neil Young" show and everyone esle just sits backs and watches him play. Stephen Stills and play the guitar.. he can play!

I always love the Allman Bros.

I was at a outdoor Boston concert in 71, that Paul Butterfield was the opener for BB King. There was this chick on stage for the opening act.. you girl from Harvard by the name of Bonnie Raitt. That was a great concert.

Just a few I've really enjoyed.

I saw Seals and Crofts at Tanglewood, way back then too.. they came on and played lousy for half and hour and then cut the show short. Luckily Laura Nyro came on and tore the house down with Christmas and the Beads of Sweat tunes.

Tom,

I saw many a concert at the "Aragon Brawlroom" I remeber being in line for Ozzy and picking my feet up, the line was so smashed together I couldn't fall, strangest feeling I've had. General admission seating, gotta love it. I saw Sammy there also. He opened for Nazareth.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane[<:o)]

Not really sure what my first concert was. Haven't been to too many, here's the ones that come to mind :

Lords of Acid (twice, first time Praga Khan opened)

Megadeth (2 or 3 times, once with Static X opening)

KMFDM

Alice Cooper

Whitesnake

Warrant

Scooter (a few days ago. awesome. opened by DJ Markski, Aquagen, & others)

This reminds me, Apocalyptica is playing Chicago sunday and I still need to try and get tickets.

I did not get to see to many concerts when I was younger. Living

out in the middle of B.F.E northwestern PA during my teen/college years, there were zilch

venues for seeing anything even half-way decent. Thus, my concert

experience is still fairly limited. However, just in the last few

years, I've seen the following:

Rush

Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Sonata Arctica

Edguy

Hammerfall

Yes, that is it! But I am not anywhere near done.

Coming up on the 3rd of November is Saxon, on the 17th is Kamelot, the

23rd will be Trans-Siberian Orchestra again, and in January will be

Sonata Arctica again. Most of these are at Jaxx nightclub (sweet

having a friggan power metal club in the area!)

And tommorrow after work, I'll be heading to Atlanta to Prog Power VI,

where I'll be seeing Stratovarious, Manticora, Therion, Stride, Angus,

amongst others (ten bands total over two nights).

And, as sad as I am to admit, I did actually see New Edition (anybody

remember them?) at the Ohio State Fair back in the mid/late 80's- and

that was not by choice! [:$][+o(]

Danny - Even though it was 33 years ago, I think I recall raising my eyebrows at the Stones/Wonder tickets at $6, notable because all the others around that time typically cost $4 (my local venue was the Charlotte NC Coliseum). I was in high school, and would/could not possibly have paid anywhere close to $20 for a concert ticket. In fact, the only time I recall paying around $20 for a concert was for the Police in 1984. I had more or less stopped going to concerts by then.

I found a stash of old ticket stubs I kept from those early concerts, and according to them, I attended concerts by Chicago in 1971 ($4), Three Dog Night 71 $4, Deep Purple 71 $4, Jethro Tull 71 $4, The Who 72 $5, Led Zeppelin 72 $5, [many others in 73-74, especially of the "Southern Rock" genre], Yes 75 $5 and so on and so on. I think my parents had to take me to the earliest ones, as I could not drive yet. My only big overnight rock "festival" was at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1975, where ELP and Allman Bros headlined. In the later 70s, my taste turned to jazz and fusion, and I was lucky to see Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea/Return to Forever, and Weather Report.

Richard,

Thats what I was thinking. I was in High School and the way I use to get money to go to concerts if I couldn't get money from my parents was to sell blood to the Red Cross. They paid $15 and all the cookies you could eat and all the juice you could drink.

I remember one time selling blood, driving to the big city of Bham from Tuscaloosa and having to pay a scalper $10 for a ticket to see the Allman Brother's. I was mad that I had to pay so much. Gas was 25 cents a gallon and a pack of cigs was 45 cents.

Oh God I sound like my Dad!
