sfogg
Vifa has had some type of balsa pulp woofers available for a few years now. Shawn
Malcolm
Well, traditional paper speaker cones were ultimately made from some kind of wood pulp, if you want to look at it this way. But these JVC cones are different. They are pressed from a slice of wood. And they use sake in the process.
dragonfyr
I would be suspect of the long term viability of a wood cone, and its propensity to dry and crack, especially under constant dynamic loading.
Olorin
The sake imparts a more relaxed sound . . . one that goes especially well with Phish.
TBrennan
No doubt one can tailor the sound with different woods, you know, ebony for a "darker" sound, oak for a "warmer" sound, birch for "brighter". Sad thing is that some dipstick "audiophiles" would buy into it, like the pellet-heads who think silver wire (oh, I mean "cable") sounds bright. thxsubwoofers
Hmm, I always wanted to know how those wooden speakers work. By the way has anyone seen the Brookstone's Flat panel speakers?
Deang
Silver wire does sound bright AND...shiney!

DrWho
I wouldn't knock these drivers until you've heard them...There's an uncanny naturalness to the sound - which I hesitate mentioning considering some of the previous comments, lol. For what it's worth I heard them without seeing them first. And this wouldn't be the only situation where wood presents positive acoustical attributes. DrWho
...dunno what to say. I had a layover in the airport and there was this audio section way off in a quiet section of a store. I of course had to check out what was there and there was this "boombox" looking thing already playing at a low volume. It was a good song so I cranked it up a bit and it had this very "natural" sound to it - it really caught me off guard because I was expecting the complete opposite (one note 100Hz bass and scratchy highs), so I started looking around for hidden subwoofers and other speakers and all that...nope, just that one unit. I would describe it as an undistracting speaker; certainly not in your face or trying to grab your attention. It had low end like a heresy (there but lacking impact), perhaps more on the sloppy side which actually helped fatten the sound a bit (so a good bad-thing if you will). The highs rolled off slowly too, but it wasn't very noticeable because there was no lack in detail or anything like that. But alas my time was running short and I had to get on my plane...only to find the same unit in Sky Magazine! (which is always a fun read). And lo and behold, it advertised wooden cones! In retrospect it kinda explains some the things I heard that I don't know how to describe other than it sounded like a wooden driver. I bet it's one of those cases where the distortion characteristics of the driver are such that they are pleasing to the ear. I think I would have been listening differently had I known it was a "fancy" (aka crappy) new design, but it really didn't sound that bad at all (what do you expect from a "boombox" anyway?) I'd say it's still more of a novelty item, but it does leave the bose wave radio in the dust (which btw is rather decent sounding - just too expensive). And I did want to add that it seemed to have a very smooth response throughout the midrange...
