Receiver recomendations please?

Hi all. I am looking for recommendations on which Receiver to get for my stepdaughter's small room HT. Where she stands right now is: a Sony Grand Wega KDF-42WE655 HDTV, a Klipsch Cinema 6 system, a Pioneer DV-578A DVD player, and a borrowed mid-90'ish BPC Pioneer receiver (that has to be returned this weekend). She has $800 to spend on a new receiver. Any thoughts? Thanks

A lot of people like the inexpensive all-digital-path Panasonic XR55

(It's around US$240). The Pioneer 1015TX is also a good

inexpensive buy with more features and pre-outs on all channels.

I'm partial to h/k receivers because they are "high-current" and play

well with low inpedence speakers.

I'm really liking the Pioneer VSX 1015 for $475 local (BB). It has alot of features, a better than average remote, video upconversion, plenty of inputs and really good power. No HDMI switching but otherwise has everything you'd want. I personally don't think spending another $500 would get you much more than HDMI switching.

She said she has an opportunity to buy a less than 1 year old, used Harman/kardon AVR 630, which is a 5.1 model, from a friend who is upgrading to a 7.1 model. He said $450. Good deal or should she try to get it lower or keep looking? I do like the way she worded one of her questions... "If I buy a 7.1 model, does tha mean I get to buy 2 more speakers?" Not HAVE to buy, GET to buy! [:D] She thinks a lot like me!

Yamaha RX-V 657
Of the units I have researched it has the best YAPO (auto speaker setup), For the money . Go to http://reviews.cnet.com/Yamaha_RX_V657_6_1_Channel_Digital_Home_Theater_Receiver/4507-6466_7-31427721.html?tag=nav for a review. The unit at B/B which is its sister unit is the HTR 5860.
Prices are running about 350.00 - 400.00. Seems prices have really fallen on this unit!

Basically it will do everything you want with plenty of breathing room ,that the more expensive unts
do. Regards Bill H.

Another research link is http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/reviews/pdf_reviews/RX-V657review.pdf I think you will be impressed.

Absolute sound also has a great review on the yamaha rxv-657, and they usually only do reviews on hi end equipment that is way out of most people's budget. They say this gives hi end AV receivers a run for their money. If i had to do it over again, i would prolly go with a yamaha for home theater, but i didn't know that i would be getting into 2 channel the way i am in the past couple months. Now i don't even use my NAD for stereo which i really liked it for. O well, it's still good for home theater, but i could of gotten away for less.

The Yamaha has gotten great reviews, e.g.

Having said that, I still like h/k receivers! The puzzle is that the h/k avr-630 is in fact a 7.1 receiver:

http://www.harmankardon.com/product_detail.aspx?Region=USA&Country=US&Language=ENG&cat=REC∏=AVR%20630&sType=C

Unless you mean the 5 year-old 630 stereo integrated amplifier which sold for over $300, but it doesn't sound like it.

The h/k for $400 is very good value.

Thanks for all the help guys. She found the Yamaha RX-V657 (new) online somewhere for just under $400 with shipping included so she ordered it. Should be here next week sometime. She is already talking about going back to where she bought her Klipsch Cinema 6 system and ordering 2 more speakers so she can utilize the 7.1! [:D]
