I just got laid off from Goodguys, but managed to walk away with two

RF-7's, an RC-7 and a pair of RS-7's and a SPL12II velodyne sub for

about 2,000 bucks. I know they are all in perfect condition, since I

was a salesman and knew the things never got hooked up.

I plugged them into my Kenwood VR-5900 reciever. Everything sounds

perfect, but I was watching War of the Worlds the other night and in

the scene where the tripod first emerges out of the interesection and

the dumb founded dip shits gather around in awe, the tripod releases a

very low frequency horn, which distorted heavily in the lower frequency

portion of the sound in my center channel. Fearing that my RC-7

was damaged, I swapped out my center with my RF-7 and it repeated the

same distortion at that exact moment. Is it my reciever clipping at

that frequency or is it some problem inherent in the audio compressoin

of the DVD?? Anyone else have this problem?

I actually tried that and the same thing happened. I think you're

right, I know that Kenwood attempted to enter the high end market with

their sovereign line and failed miserably and now I know why. I bought

that amp when I was seventeen and didn't know jack. At the moment I'm

looking into the Denon AVR4806 (considering I've got a lot of pals at

Magnolia who went there after the Goodguys layoffs, I can get it for

cost), I've also been intrigued by Outlaws 990 processor and their

combo amp packages.

99% chance it is amp clipping. Make sure your RC-7 is crossed over...it

is NOT a full range speaker so freeing it up from bass duties may help

your already overtaxed amp. You may want to roll the RF-7s too if there

is an option to roll out at 40 hz. If it clips on the RC-7, it will

definitly clip on the RF-7's. Either use bass management to roll the

low end out a bit more, or turn it down (lest you suffer blown

compression drivers which ain't covered by warranty!)

I have not seen the movie yet but in another forum I visit this particular scene has raised some issues. Many posters have perceived issues with the "horn" sound, thinking they have equipment problems. The general concensus is that it's just a strange sound in the track. You might try listening to that track on someone elses system for comparitive purposes. I've also read that the WOTW sountrack is very bass heavy and has literally taken out some subs. I can't wait to hear it!

Oh yeah, the sound design is amazing. I haven't heard a system work

like that since Return of the King. The track is bass heavy though, but

that seems to be the only instance where I hear any sort of distortion.

Check out the Ferry crossing sequence where heavy bass is apparant as

the tripods sound their horns and lumber by. My sub has been handling

it nicely, I'm starting to think it has something to do with the

audio compression of the 5.1 mix.

Then it has to be my cheap *** reciever.

Have any of you guys tried outlaw?? Since they sell through the

internet there's not any way to really "audition" them without

commiting to a purchase with their 30 day money back deal. Seems like

there must be some sort of catch for the price.

Now I have another problem. In my rear RS7 whenever a higher frequency

comes up I hear this horrible metallic static sound. Almost like some

kind of magnetic interferance. Fearing it was damaged I switched it to

the other side of the room and it worked perfectly. I put my other RS7

in its place and it produced the same problem. I even tried my RS35 and

it made the same noise in that spot. I don't think it's the wiring

since I don't think wiring produces that response, could this be my

reciever again?

Sorry to hear about the layoff, but welcome to the forum, you will find a great bunch of very knowledgeable people here who have been willing to help out wherever they can.

While I don't have any Outlaw gear, but my brother "Silversport" does and everything I have listened to has sounded great. If you want it from "the horse's mouth" you might want to try a pm to him on this forum.

BTW, Outlaw has some new gear, both in the receiver and separates (processor/amplifier) which look like a good deal.

Best of luck!

OH YEAH, that is some ridiculous bass there, but the really scary part is the foghorn like portions of that tone blend. One of the truly scariest sound I've ever heard. Whoever mixed that was a genius, but it will take out speakers, it's so well above the rest of the mix volume wise.

I had the JBL 18" hooked up that day, it's the first time the whole house shook and I've got 1" thick plaster walls and hardwood floors.

Another DVD with some incredible base sound tracks is "Flight of the Phoenix" (new version).

When that plane crashes and rolls around a few times with actors scattered everywhere, the base was overwhelming.

And I thought Lord of the Rings had some deep base sound tracks.

I will have to put "War of the Worlds" on my NetFlix que.

As a side note, larger gauge speaker wire seems to really help "challenged" receivers deliver the goods to Klipsch speakers so that may be a cheap test for you to see if that may be the problem.

I too suggest trying the DVD at a friends house with a similar system or better.

Sorry to hear about the layoff. I am sure you will land on your feet with an even better opportunity!
