coda
Earphones do the most damage, says Townshend. I have unwittingly helped to invent and refine a type of music that makes its principal proponents deaf. It takes time, but it happens. oldtimer
Ah, Townshend patting himself on the back some more.....I submit IMHO that he has neither invented nor refined anything.
jpm
I found the article interesting and I couldn't agree with Pete more. What's your problem?

Not a big "Who" fan then huh! I was well into them in my teens. Tommy and Quadrephenia were 2 of my all time favorite albums - probably still are - but I haven't listened to them in a loooong time. Got both on vinyl - of course. Actually got both versions of Tommy - the Who only one - and the everyone wants some one.
oldtimer
No problem jpm, but I still stand by what I said. Whether you like the who or not, what did townshend help invent? He played guitar in a popular rock band, but if you remember the thread on guitar players a while back I don't recall him being mentioned with the greats like Page, Hendrix, etc.
Duke Spinner
Townsend was a Great rhythm guitarist .... just not real good at the Lead part
oldtimer
Ok Duke, lol. Am I to infer that I am the red not smiley face? Or are you just trying to stop a flame war in general?
D-MAN
Ah, Townshend patting himself on the back some more.....I submit IMHO that he has neither invented nor refined anything. Indeed. Hubris. DM
oldtimer
Or maybe you are wanting to start a new one about rhythm guitarists that are better than townshend?
Duke Spinner
Ok Duke, lol. Am I to infer that I am the red not smiley face? Or are you just trying to stop a flame war in general? 100% With your opinion, OldT. Townsend certianly had some great Showmanship ....not much else
jpm
I'm not concerned with Townsend's talent, or lack thereof. I'm down with his feeling that headphones at high volume cause hearing damage. My crazy-azz brother can attest to that... "What?"
oldtimer
I agree with all that. He also talks about live sound levels, and those also undoubtably contributed to his hearing loss. Were they not called rock and roll's loudest band? That one quote in question though, as d-man says is hubris.
pauln
Never liked the Who. They don't seem to know how to play their instruments.
jpm
I dunno. Ever see the Dead's wall of sound?
Born2RockU
I can totally understand and do agree w/ Pete. Working the studio w/ headphones can rip your ears apart. Doing the work I do, it is scary the day after, when I go back in the studio and realize what level I had my headphones at. Its so sad how my love for music has destroyed my hearing.... Beware of headphone volumes after twenty minutes or more of listening loud.
rivieraranch
Being exposed to loud noise causes hearing loss, gradually, whether due to hearing music, machinery, or noise pollution; if you don't protect your ears you'll be deaf. In clubs, at concerts and events music and audio is recklessly amplified to damaging levels, with utter disregard of the consequences. This should not be allowed to continue. jpm
I believe I heard somewhere the Stones were limited on the db's at their latest tour through Seattle. It may be bs, I don't know.

Couldn't agree more - to add insult to injury - it is more often than not, also very poor fidelity, in large part, due to room anomalies. coda
The Who will start touring again this summer I have high hopes for the whole tour to be shared to a wide audience at home in a mixture of PAY FOR VIEW and FREE special webcasts. A few will be wearing headphones. . If hearing damage is true, not sure if ear buds make it worse, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93655
