thebes
Well the Fourm may be crashing a lot lately but we've got no problems because they always fix it by Monday. I'm sure it's so that Klipsch employees can check in to get their weekly fix of music recommendations. Format's simple: Name of artist or group, name of album, type of music as best you can (rock, blues etc.), and recording format (cd, lp etc.) As usual I'll start it off with: Ella Fitzgerald, "These Are The Blues", cd, blues Known mainly for her stellar arrangments in jazz, soul and showtunes, Ella seldom played the blues. Corrected that oversigh,t though, on this stellar 1964 recoding with such blues standards as "See See Rider", "St. Louis Blues" and "Down Hearted Blues". Recorded and issued by Verve so you know the sound quality's good. So what do you have to share this week?
grog
ANT REMASTERSLIMITED EDITION COLLECTORS SET My wife has always been a big Adam Ant fan so I decided to get her the special "Ant Remasters Boxset with Redux" for her birthday.I finished the collection by adding the prior remasters which made a great Christmas present and completed the boxset. To be honest I was not a huge Adam Ant fan when I decided to get this boxset and additional remasters. I knew my wife loved his music and that was enough for me. Thing is I found Adam Ant to be a very versatile performer and musician. Marco Pirroni who wrote most of the music is outstanding. Adam Ant is actually now one of my favorite performers. I can listen to Adam Ant for hours without getting bored with his music due to the varity of content and style. Adam Ant was one hell of a singer and drummer. The more you hear him play the more you know this man is more than just outstanding. "Despirate But Not Serious" has some of the greatest horn section I have heard in a long time. The guitar in "Man Called Marco" is just plain awesome. Once the boxset is fully complete the collection offers some of the finest music ever heard. Each remasters CD includes a great deal of extra content. This special box set is packaged with the three new remasters , PLUS provide extra storage space for the previously released gems - Dirk Wears White Sox, Kings of the Wild Frontier and Prince Charming that were released in 2004. "Adam Ant Remastered" will hold all six remasters nicely but with an added bonus! To complete the set, a 15-track bonus disc "Adam Ant-Redux"; a selection of rare demo tracks will also be included! In addition, this will also feature a unheard cover of Marc Bolan's 'Dandy In The Underworld, and sleeve notes by Adam Ant and Marco Pirroni. sputnik
The soundtrack from the Christopher Guest film "A Mighty Wind". I apologize in advance for the long post but I want to make a strong recommendation for this CD. I'd say this is a must have CD. Be sure to see this film if you haven't already. I think this is the best of the Chrisopher Guest mockumentaries including "Best in Show", "Waiting for Guffman", and "This is Spinal Tap". The film is about a long awaited reunion performance of three almost legendary folk bands from the sixties - The Folksmen, The New Main Street Singers, and the romantic duo of Mitch and Mickey. The soundtrack is great with clever and witty lyrics. Even though it is a parody of folk music, it's done with such an obvious appreciation of the genre that I think even Pete Seeger would love it. The Folksmen consist of the same guys that were Spinal Tap - Christopher Guest, Michael McKean (Lenny from Lenny and Squigtones - Laverne and Shirley), and Harry Shearer. They sing songs along the lines of The Kingston Trio, the Smothers Brothers, and The Weavers. Their albums were unique in that you had to put the hole in the center of the LP yourself and if you did it right, you'd have some pretty good music. They sing "Never Did No Wanderin'" (a song about all of the places they have never been and the things they have never done), "Blood on the Coal" (a song about a tragic train wreck that somehow happens inside of a coal mine at shift change), and if there is only one reason to buy this CD, it's for the Folksmen cover of The Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up". The New Main Street Singers, whose matriarch figure is an ex porn star who could and would do things that the other "girls" couldn't or wouldn't, are something of a take on the New Christy Minstrels and only sing happy songs. Due to a lack of communication, they also do a cover of "Never Did No Wanderin'" on this CD. Then there is the music Mitch and Mickey (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara). These songs aren't really parody but are truly beautiful ballads and one was an Oscar nominee for "Best Original Song" of 2003. These are the songs that you would've fallen in love to in the sixties had they really been around. See the film and buy this CD. Great music. "A Mighty Wind" - The Album 1. Old Joe's Place - The Folksmen 2. Just That Kinda Day - The New Main Street Singers 3. When You're Next To Me - Mitch & Mickey 4. Never Did No Wanderin' - The Folksmen 5. Fare Away - The New Main Street Singers 6. One More Time - Mitch & Mickey 7. Loco Man - The Folksmen 8. The Good Book Song - The New Main Street Singers 9. Skeletons Of Quinto - The Folksmen 10. Never Did No Wanderin' - The New Main Street Singers 11. The Ballad Of Bobby And June - Mitch & Mickey 12. Blood On The Coal - The Folksmen 13. Main Street Rag - The New Main Street Singers 14. Start Me Up - The Folksmen 15. Potato's In The Paddy Wagon - The New Main Street Singers 16. A Kiss At The End Of The Rainbow - Mitch & Mickey 17. Steve_L
Okay, well I tried posting this as a separate thread a couple times this weekend, but to no avail. So, here you go. I just Netflixed this late last week, threw it in the DVD player Friday as the wife was out partying with work/teacher bros, so I had the whole neighborhood to myself. I had this DVD ordered before I was halfway through the first play.Lucinda Williams - Live in Austin DVD with DD5.1 or DTSLucinda is this fabulous mix of Chrissie Hyndes, Emmy Lou Harris, Joni Mitchell and Melanie. Do you like country-blues? Do you like country-rock? Do you like earthy, passionate, honest, real world, middle America stories?Lucinda is at her best on this DVD, if maybe a bit stiff at first, she loosens up as she warms up. Her band is a powerhouse group of studio musicians that just really really rock! There are two lead guitarists that are worth the price of admission all by themselves. The sound and video quality is Austin City Limits Excellent. This is a MUST OWN DVD.
thebes
I'll second Steve's recommendation, not the album per se, but I saw her in concert last year at a local nightclub and she is very, very good, with wonderful songwriting, very tight band and a powerful voice. May have to pick this one up myself.

Steve_L
I don't know what band she had when you saw her, but on this she has two guys that are both fantastic. It's really a fabulous band that adds the whole experience of Lucinda.. ...she's the kind of girl you meet at the local bar, and somewhere along the way her stuff ends up at your place. 6 months later you figure out she's moved in.. kind of, but all the same you're not really sure if it's you or your couch, refridgerator and beer she really wants. All the same, she's feeling the same way about you. Then a year down the road your get falling down drunk and split with her. Two years later you're a song on her next album, it's said, sweet, bluesy and real. That's Lucinda.
lovedrummin
Well, I have a DVD recommendation. This will appeal to jazz/big band fans and especially drummers. Buddy Rich: "Buddy Rich: Jazz Legend: 1917 - 1987": DVD - Jazz/ Big Band I got this through Netflix and it's definitely on my list to purchase. The video quality varies (due to the age of some of the material. The audio is only 2.0 but I listened to it in 5 channel stereo. All I can say is WHEW! If todays drummers had half the chops Rich had they'd be doing great. Just watch Rich's left hand in action - speed and precision. I was fortunate enough to see him perform in concert twice before he died. This just reinforced how lucky I was. The DVD is basically a documentary, but there are plenty of full performnces such as "West Side Story" and "Channel One Suite". Check out "Brush Strokes". In one segment he's soloing and if you watch close you see that he's actually tapping the bass drum with his right stick and in another piece he has a roll going with his left hand and bass drum. A couple of times there are close-ups of him doing rolls in his solos where he slows down to all but stopping and then speeds up to the point where the sticks are a blur. Well, you get the idea. I was blown away.
