$20,000 HT System please

Hi, we just moved into a new neighborhood and my neighbor will let me drive a new car every thursday if i can do her a favor (she gets 3 new cars every thursday, Jaguar, BMW, Corvettes, Hummers... you name it, she gets it). She has a room, 24 feet wide, 20 feet deep, with 10 foot ceilings (on the second floor). She is putting in a HT in there, wants to spend NO MORE than $20,000, hopefully less. She is getting a 10 foot screen (projection) that costs about $4000+ (Rockford) and now she needsthe audio and receiver parts. Like all the speakers, the receivers, the DVD, all that is required for the sound part. Also, she will need to put in sound proofing (there is no sheetrock up so now is the time for that!). ANy suggestions? Thanks a ton, you could make a 17 year old boy's dream come true, imagine driving up to school as a junior at a NEW school you have been at for only 1 week in a 2002 Escalade! That oculd be me if this works out right!

Thanks sooooooooo soooooooooo sooooooooo much!

I'd suggest a bit of caution. Is any of this on the level? Are you 17 years old? If so, I think you're getting into a relationship well over your head. Perhaps anyone's.

It seems to me the person has a lot of money to spend and may not be very focused on what they want, or were it is going. The rapidly changing choice of cars shows that goals are very fluid. Even flightly.

That could also extend to architecture and friendships.

Your friend might be well served by a home theater specialist, who can work with an architect.

This all sets off alarm bells.

no no no... she owns a company where they tests cars and give reports, she is one of the ppl that otes on teh "car of the year" type things, she is way up on the ladder for that kinds of stuff. Movie productions call her when they need cars and celebrities when they are in town.

She is a friend of the family and she said she will let me be an employee and test the cars. It is all legit, trust me LoL!

Thanks for the concern! Smile.gif

William is probably right about the persone,I will provide the "recomended components".

You better give me someting Justin if this works,or I will send strong arms afrter ya. Smile.gif

If horn loaded speakers are OK with her,then...

Klipsch RF-7 (2.2K)

Klipsch RC-7 (2.4K)three,center and the other two as sourrounds

SVS Ultra/Samson 1000 amp(2.4K)

So far you have about 7 grand on speakers, great speakers and superlative subwoofer system.HT at its best(for the dollar).

Onkyo Integra RDC-7(pre/pro)(3K)

Onkyo Integra RDV-1(DVD player)(3K)

Onkyo Integra RDA-7(7 channel power amp,BAT(balanded Audio Tech for the rest of ya)design (4K)

While Onkyo is know for recievers the Integra Research is the High-End.And with a BAT designed amp you get superlative sound quality.

The dealer I am sure will throw in some very good wires to conect it all.

The above will perform like few others and is a true THX Ultra system. All for about 17-18 grand(your projector not included). If you deal a 16K figue is realistic. So the total will slide just within 20K budget.

Now this is for the refined audiopile...

NAH FORGET IT THE BUDGET IS TOO TINY!

If she has real money just do like the EAR did and get these. Smile.gif

Dynaudio Contour 3.3 (7K)

Dynaudio Contour Ceneter (1.4K)

Dunaudio Contour 1.1 two pairs (3.4K)

Aerial Acoustics SW12 (5K) or SVS Ultra/Bryston 4B-ST power amp(5K)

Sunfire Theater Grand II (3.3K)

Celeste MOON W5 two times (10K)

Celeste MOON W3 two times (6K)

Pioneer DV-AX10 DVD/SACD (5K)

Monster Cable Sigma,M2.2 and M1000 around (4K for all cables)

With this system you get audio and video(the projector is so so,get a Faroudja line quadrupler with a Vidikron Vision One projector)

Now you will have grandiose picture and sound.

thanks ears.

trust me NOTHING 'evil' will come of this! LoL! She is friends with Farah Faucet (how do you spell that?) and does work for Destiny's Child, she has the money Smile.gif She is also married for like 20-30 years, has a son who is gornw up and owns a company, and has been a friend of the family for a while. Just glad we moved next door to each other.. Right now she has a new yellow corvette, very nice!

Ok, so look slike 16K is what she will spend, how about a projecter? The HT Store where she went said to get a Rockfort one... i am clueless when it comes to those things.

Also, for the downstairs HT (the upstairs is the mainone, the downstairs the just general one) she would want to spend around $10,000, what would work?

Also, how much would it cost to do a decent sound prrofing of the house, no walls yet so this is the time to do it. And what would she go about getting?

justin, it was a fun exercise but seriously for that kinda dough have a dealer or a pro come in. most better dealers will give a consultation & maybe even help w/ the install if u buy from them.

any good klipsch dealers around? just find that & maybe she'll let u drive the car Smile.gif

Here's a link straight to the Super Sound Clip: http://www.soundproofing.org/sales/supersoundclip/supersoundclip.htm

thanks for the link to the sound proofing.

she trusts me because i do a lot of research on this kinda stuff and have help put together many systems for family memebers, nothing this nice though, that is why i came here.

she will definately have it professionally installed, but she wanted to have someone that had an education in this stuff so she does not end up buying somehting like BOSE because it sounds (not literally) great.

Twenty ways to spend twenty grand

I started to write this long detailed step-by-step magnum opus of what I would do to assemble a subliminal sound system, but you know what? Just keep it simple:

1. Insulate the walls to make them more solid and dense,

2. You might even consider walls of dusky curtains on both sides

3. Consider installing hospital grade outlets while the walls are bare

4. See if you can get a dedicated line for the power to the room

5. Curtain the windows

6. Carpet the floor

7. Make sure that more than enough A/C flows to the room

8. Buy a polite British DVD/CD player, like the Rotel RDV-1080 at http://www.rotel.com/products/rdv1080.htm and put it on a rock solid base,

9. Since they are so well recommended here, get the biggest Denon receiver she can afford (like the Denon AVR-5800 with 7 channels at 170 watts each into 8 ohms <.05%thd for $3500 at http://www.denon.com/catalog/products.asp?l=1&c=2) or Klipsch's Argon Soundstage and Argon amps,

10. Makes sure she likes the sound of Klipsch

11. Since you are going solid state, I would stick with the Reference line, using the architectural models that go in the wall for the center, (4) RCW5s for the sides, for example, and two rears, but use the regular Reference 7 models for the fronts, so you can toe them in

12. Consult Klipsch for the proper match

13. Have the speakers placed at ear level 1/4 and 3/4 of the way down the side and back walls

14. Add the SVS CS-Ultra package (http://www.svsubwoofers.com/csultrahome.htm) with each tube in the front corners

15. Make sure that she picks out the speaker color to match the entertainment center

16. Get a comfortable couch that matches the curtains and the entertainment center

17. Make sure that you can place the couch with its 2 side tables in the best position

18. Make sure that you have a small lamp so people can see the program or remote control

19. Remove all other furniture except the popcorn maker

20. Get lots of quotes and ideas from all sorts of A/V installers, including Tweeter

simply insulating walls to make them more dense does NOT do much for sound deadening...

sounds like she has plenty of money to do it right, with 'floating' walls, using the super sound clips and foam mats, 2 layers of drywall, etc

check this link in particular: http://soundproofing.org/infopages/channel.htm

I also just found a company that will send you a whole kit (all you need is drywall and screws) just from the dimensions of the room that you give them:
