kenratboy Posted March 7, 2006 Share Posted March 7, 2006 During some scenes when watching DirecTV HD channels, there is some macroblocking (might not be the right word, but pixelization). Is this the box, cable, or TV, or all of it? Audioholics.com said something about poor cables can cause issues (DVI), and we are using the free, in-the-box cables that came with the unit. I could get a nice 2 meter AudioQuest HDMI cable for next to nothing, would it worth my while to upgrade? I know about cables and snake oil and all that, but with a expensive box and expensive TV, spending a little money on a good cable is irrelivant in the long run. atomicskiier01 Posted March 7, 2006 Share Posted March 7, 2006 I get this exact same thing with my Motorola cable box, but it only occurs on certain channels some of the time. For example, during the NFL season, I was flipping back and forth between two games and it was happening on one channel, and not the other. My opinion, and it is only an opinion, is that the cable company compresses some of the channels to save on space or bandwith(?) and that's why the pixelation is happening during fast-moving scenes. Fish Posted March 7, 2006 Share Posted March 7, 2006 I'm using a 2m parts express hdmi cable($27 delivered)on a 50"Sony and it works great on dish hd,sd.Fancy cables are not needed just good quality.If you're using your 27"it should not be the tv,direct tv box could be to blame if you already have a good hdmi/component cable hooked up. You are referring to LCD's, but that problem has been solved for the most part with recent LCD technology. I know that my TV is capable, becuase when I watched the Colts vs. Steelers game this year, the picture was completely flawless, which lead me to believe that the cable company was sending a signal with little or no compression. Fish Posted March 8, 2006 Share Posted March 8, 2006 I was all set to purchase a new 52"mits lcd projection(cause I love mits)it had artifacts on fast moving scenes.This may have been due to the set up but the 50"a10 wega had the same feed with no artifacts,I bought the wega.I saw many tvs with the artifacts on quick motion and almost kept my bigbox mits but gave the wega a try at home,very happy. JJkizak Posted March 8, 2006 Share Posted March 8, 2006 With my OTA system pixelization is rare but one local channel has it by the gob full in the SD mode (The Tube music channel) and it is the fault of the reduced satellite feed on the second digital channel. On some of the olympics programs everytime they changed a scene there would be a very small and very quick burst of fuzzy pixels but you had to be looking for it or you would never see it. The control center feeds were fine. If you really want to understand these problems you must visit the AVS forum and be sure you have plenty of time allowed. It seams many of the complaints have come from the comcast hd boxes. I have direct tv and have no problem with macroblocking using the hdmi output on my hd sat receiver to my projector. I would go over to the avs forum and snoop around. There are always some topics going on about this. IMO I really think it's a problem with cable. While I don't have Comcast, I use the same box that Comcast does (Motorola DCT-6412). I spent a while over at AVS yesterday, but I'll try again. Thanks for the tip! I install Directv and I have found that some of the programs, mostly sport events, do pixel on fast movements when in 1080. Lower it to 720 and see if it still does it. I think the Directv HD channels other than ESPN and TNT have to many promotional things on them. I still like my off-air antenna better, but I had to install two of them.
