ancientdude
Just looking for a nice receiver that can act as a pre/pro, when I go into separates down the road. I have been doing some major downsizing recently and abandoned most of my systems and amps, just wanted to start over...haha. I want to start off small, maybe like a denon 2805? Any suggestions? ccsakura
Iif you will go to seperate in a short time, look for something cheap....... like pioneer 1015 for $400 with AutoEQ and stuff. It wouldn't hurt that much compare to get a 1k reciever
DrWho
Denon is a great route to go....try to get one of the units with the Burr Brown Dacs. The most important part of a pre/pro is the digital to analog conversion (aka, the dac) and Denon has really cornered that market. I'm not sure which all recievers have them, but I know the 2807 does not - the 3806 does.

Granted, I still want to eventually upgrade to a "dedicted" Pre/Pro, but the Denon has been during a supurb job for the past couple of years, and to this set of ears, sounds very good. FYI, I have a B&K Ref 200.7 amp with a complete Reference 7 speaker package (RF-7s front, RS-7s side and RC-7 front center and rear). rcarlton
Even the Denon AVR 3200 still works well as a Pre/Pro. Running everyday since 1998 with no problems.
Fish
The Denons are decent and fairly dependable units, better than most(I prefer HK music)for a cheap avr.A nice used 38xx for about $350-550 would be ok.If music ain't too important most any mentioned would do.I'd get the Outlaw $1295 pre/pro and amp combo if I were spending $1k ballpark.Or a nice used Rotel 1066 (about $600 or so) and a $5/600 5/7 ch amp.Or.... getech
I have found that most if not all of the Denon receivers are poor performers. I guess the adage that you truly get what you pay for is true here in the Denon line of products.

There is an ongoing project at my university where they are going about measuring every possible aspect of every piece of electrical audio gear they can get their hands on in attempt to figure out what kind of measurements are needed to quantify "equipment synergy" - basically trying to quantify how different pieces of gear work together. Included in the study is the subjective opinions of "golden ears" and random people off the street. All that to say...I am surprised by the claim am a bit curious as to the specifics of your situation.

WOW, not my first thought, I have owned Denon separates, and use s Denon DVD player with Burr/Brown DACS. I currently use a Yamaha rcvr but that was a matter of economics at the time, if a Denon would have been available I'd have gone that route. What issues are you having with Denon's line of products? To answer the orignal question both Yamaha and Denon will work well as a pre/pro. If it is a temp stop over I would not sink too much into the receiver in hopes of saving up for a dedicated Pre/Pro as soon as possible.
