Allan Songer
They must have come way down in price--the last time I looked they were more like $60-$70 each (the aluminum ones were about half of that or less). Or maybe I'm just totally WRONG. The last time I bought Jensens was more than 2 years ago . . .
Audible Nectar
"Sure I suppose I could do that Joe. Really for a good comparison I would think a pair would be a better test though. I don't put much wait into listening to Mono since I'm so accustom to Stereo. Seems like it would be awful hard to pick out the difference in a meaningful way." For purposes of the tests we have been doing, mono will tell us PLENTY. You do have to run the preamps in mixed mono, evaluate, then after a week of listening I swap the amps around L/R (and JUST the amps - tubes and EVERYTHING else stays where it is). This also allows direct comparisons of two builds at once. I even take the trouble to make sure that every tube tests exactly the same way - identical in make, model, and strength, and all with matched sections, and with each tube checked in a mic setup for microphonics. The extended play also allows for break in of the caps. I ran an Illinois capped amp vs. 2 quality levels of Sonicraft capped amps, and could pick them all apart immediately. Of course, if Joe wants to donate two, that's quite OK, but one will tell us if the build is worth duplicating/persuing further.

Dave, Well I'm not surprised you could pick out the difference between Illinois and Sonicaps I'm sure the difference was substacial. But were not talking leaps and bounds difference here. If I'm going to do this I want to have a chance to hear the difference and enjoy them. I will not enjoy it at all in mono since 99% of my recording are stereo. In my case I wouldn't be able to make any tried and true decisions in mono. I really have no idea how you could actually do anything beyond say "yep they have more bass" doing your comparison in mono. I mean it may improve the bass but when played in stereo you find you actually like it better before. Just seems logical to me to make evaluations with a amplifier setup like you normally listen. Just switching a stereo preamp from stereo the mono will reduce hi frequency response by a very noticeable margin. Craig
