Marvel
You are full of contradictions here. A tractrix isn't a CD horn. Which do you want? Contradictions? You can so totally have a constant directivity horn with a tractrix flare rate - I'm building one right now [] CD refers to it having a flat polar response and tractrix refers to the waveguide always being perpendicular to the direction of sound. It seems you would have to change the throat and waveguide shape to make it a CD horn. Then it's not a tractrix. I love being proven wrong, so I eagerly await your finished product. I'm not trying to be smarta$$, I just think they contradict each other in the design.
DrWho
And maybe I'm not understanding the literature correctly...but I swear I've read about CD exponential and CD conical horns before. All of the horn theory that exists right now (in the public domain) discusses the area expansion rate of the horn. The tractrix was the first design that started by taking the direction of sound relative to the waveguide into account, but was created for a circular shaped mouth...The instant you move to a rectangular mouth you no longer have a true tractrix horn because the sound isn't always perpendicular. Sure, you have the same area expansion rate, but you don't have the cool perpendicular surfaces. They still call it tractrix though. From my understanding of constant directivity it is but a specific shape for the mouth of a horn such that all frequencies travel in the same direction. I believe it is the bi-radial horn that uses an exponential area expansion rate with a constant directivity shape for the horizontal dispersion. It then force fits the top and bottom to achieve the proper area expansion. I know the math doesn't classically work out to achieve CD in both planes for any of the area expansion rates, but that's what thinking outside the box is for [] It might be patentable so I won't talk about it on the forums, but it should be done by the end of this summer *crosses fingers* Btw, isn't that fancy woodhorn driver on top of the Jubille a tractrix with CD in the horizontal plane? I guess I'll found out at hope this summer. I know all of the EV CD horns have the same shape and I was under the impression they referred to them as exponential horns...they just skew the ideal area expansion in order to achieve better directivity. Btw, Bob...you got an email - curious as to the price of your cornwall driver package.
