cueman
Without breaking the bank, can someone suggest a decent quad set of EL34 tubes for my amp? By not breaking the bank, I mean I'd like to keep it under $200 if possible. Any opinions on these: http://tinyurl.com/gsypt http://tinyurl.com/gkp24 Thanks, Todd
Duke Spinner
NOS Tesla ...??? from when ...?? 2002 ...?? the Siemen might be ok ... my idea of NOS might be Mullard, GE, Sylvania ( 6CA7 ) the EL-34 has warm harmonic structure .. Woop's ....!!!!!!!!!!!! us Tube guy's ... talkin' DISTORTION characteristic's .... Aren't We........... the 6CA7 ...was an Industrial substitute... a little Harder sounding, tougher construction they didn't Arc Over as easy, screen to grid what ...Pin #5 to Pin #7.........Poof ....!!! jcmusic
Todd i recently got a pair of Seimen's EL34's and i think they are great, they work nice in my 300b amp. jay
kev313
I believe NOS Tesla refers to the 1990's prior to being sold to JJ. The best of these el34's can be distinguished by a brown base and, rumor has it, they were made with the original Mullard xf2 tooling. jcmusic
todd the ones i have are similar to the ones you list on ebay, They have the brown bases and East Germany printed on them. I paid $ 130 for a pair you may be able to do better getting a quad. jay
Guy Landau
Todd, IMO, The skinney bottle Siemens sound too thin. The Teslas are very nice. Vintage 1980's with brown bases are great. With some luck you might be able to find a quad of Mullard xf2's or Amperex DD getter for around $200.
fini
Is there anything inherently better about the shape and number of getters in a tube, or is it's getter type (i.e. DD) indicative of other qualities inthe tube? A getter's purpose is to capture stray gas molecules in the tube, right?
cueman
Thanks for the replies. Where do most of you guys get your tubes, at a local place or online? I really don't know enough about them to be shopping on ebay to tell you the truth. Thanks,, Todd

sunnysal
Tube world has nice tubes www.tubeworld.com brenden is a bit pricey but you get very good tubes and he stands behind his sales (something that is important is vintage/NOS sales IMHO). I like the new EH offerings for EL34, check out www.newsensor.com (the owner of sovtek, EH, svetlana, "mullard" and "tungsol" brands) regards, tony
dubai2000
I am with Tony on this one: a reliable dealer is indeed worth some extra financial outlay and tubeworld struck me as being reliable. For EL34 I'd also consider Valve Arts. I am very pleased with the tone of my cryoed quad used in a Maratz 8B: nice and creamy would be my description.
