jzoz01
Has anyone owned Deffinitive Technology powered towers? I can find nothing but rave reviews in both magazines and on the web, but I went to audition them at a local dealer and thought they were just aweful. Very brittle highs and the bass was very boomy. I think they were the most fatiguing speaker i have ever listened too. We these just not setup properly? I am interested in replacing my aging bedroom speakers (KG3.5s) with something new and the idea of a powered tower seemed kinda interesting as I could run them full range and not have a sub. Has anyone owned a pair?
Jay481985
They have subwoofers for the lows in the actual towers and use dipoles for midtrange.
jdm56
I haven't owned any, but I have heard them a number of times and have never been less than impressed by them. I recall hearing the BP20 and BP30, then the BP2000 and some other derivitives of that model. All have had good, solid bass and open, natural sounding mids and highs. Personally, I like the bi-polar concept. They may not be strictly neutral but they sure sound good.
jacksonbart
Does Klipsch own the company yet? Fred is ambitious so watch out!
wuzzzer
I had two pairs of Definitive Tech satellite speakers and a 15" Def Tech powered sub. The satellites did a good job of sound dispersion, there was an extemly wide sweet spot in the listening area. However, imaging was terrible. Highs were pretty nonexistant, too. I had BP1 fronts and BP1x surrounds and sold them on eBay for a LOT more than I ever expected to get for them. So, someone out there must sure like 'em! damonrpayne
My friend RFinco who's on the forums sometimes has a nice DefTech system. I would never consider them for listening to music but they perform well in movies. Just my opinion. Klipsch reference & heritage sound better to my ears. jzoz01
That's kinda the impression that I got as well. The we're bad for movies and actually made the room seem a lot bigger than it was. The downside for me is in music. I think they were the BP7001SC. It was the smaller of the two subercube towers. They were about $3600 a pair. Fish
I've had 2000tl and 7001,neither could top the 7's.I did a pretty extensive audition as I would have liked to keep em' considering I got em' for 1/2 price, with cherry trim. They were'nt bad, just not as good as 7's,the 7001 could not even beat the rf5's with a sub. RFinco
My friend RFinco who's on the forums sometimes has a nice DefTech system. I would never consider them for listening to music but they perform well in movies. Just my opinion. Klipsch reference & heritage sound better to my ears. I love my Def Techs. I think they sound fantastic. The only Klipsch speakers that I've enjoyed more were Heritage line, specifically Khorns in a "good" room. I've had many people over and they all have enjoyed my system, and I'm sure they would enjoy other systems as well. Now, with that said - I will say this.. I have listened to music on them maybe 10 times -- I have them for movies. Thats what I got them for. The other thing is I'm not useing seperates (maybe someday when I can cough up the dough) I'm useing a Pioneer Elite 49tx receiver, which - I do like, but I would prefer seperates at some point, particularly dedicated amplification. There are many many people out there that absolutely love the way Def Tech speakers sound. That doesn't mean they are the best thing since sliced bread, it just means some people like them, and vice versa - some don't. I've gotten into heated discussions about this, so I'm keeping it away from being derogatory in anyway toward anyone's particular sound prefrence. The built in subwoofers in the towers are very solid and the bi-pole design of the speakers (the back of the speaker matches the front so there are 2 tweeters and 4 midranges) Is something that I believe expands the sweet spot nicely but with that expansion comes trade off -- and they don't image as well as other speakers that I've heard. But, that isn't something that is important to me as a listener, or as important as it is for some. I have for my set up 2 BP2000TL towers - each with a 15" powered sub 1 C/L/R 2000 center channel 4 BPX surrounds powered by PIoneer ELITE 49tx receiver I love it. I'm quite pleased with it, and 99% of the time I've never heard a system I've liked more (the 802s, and John's all heritage system are that nasty little 1% -- hopefully Damon's will add to that 1% [])
